Thanks for watching. Chess is the best!!
Top Chess Engine Championship, formerly known as Thoresen Chess Engines Competition (TCEC or nTCEC), is a computer chess tournament that has been run since 2010. It was organized, directed, and hosted by Martin Thoresen until the end of Season 6; from Season 7 onward it has been organized by Chessdom. It is often regarded as the Unofficial World Computer Chess Championship because of its strong participant line-up and long time-control matches on high-end hardware, giving rise to very high-class chess.
The TCEC competition is divided into seasons, where each season happens over a course of a few months, with matches played round-the-clock and broadcast live over the internet. Each season is divided into several qualifying stages and one "superfinal", where the top two chess engines play 100 games to win the title of "TCEC Grand Champion". In the superfinal, each engine plays 50 openings, once as each side. Beginning in Season 11 in 2018, a division system was introduced; the top 2 engines in each division are promoted, and the bottom 2 are relegated. Currently, there are 5 divisions (a Premier division, and divisions 1-4); newcomers generally start in division 4.

The way potential pawn breaks were analysed and refuted was mesmerising. I was sceptical of white's play with having a open B file, and even when it was down a piece with the potential to exchange pieces. Looked like Stock fish was in the driver's seat all through with precise calculations. Awesome analysis like always @Jazarov's chess channel!

one thing i have noticed @Jozarov is that you have a very hit and miss style. what i mean by this is that you find some very beautiful and accurate continuations, but you also have a tendancy to like to not simplify when that is indeed the quickest way to your goal. knowing as i do the tendancy for high rated players to not want to swap stuff off, this suggests to me that you are a strong player yourself, however, some(most?)-times, the percentage game wins.

It's depending on chess pieces position as well. And also, we often use the standard valuation of chess pieces: 1-3-3-5-9, means pawn = 1, knight = bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9 But for stockfish it's far different, the average value overall of the Rook is 6.625, much stronger than 5 pawns, you can find it in wikipedia, here is the link en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece_relative_value In Alternative valuations I will write that here anyway Pawn 1 - Knight 4.16 - Bishop 4.41 - Rook 6.625 - Queen 12.92 (Note that it's overall, the value will change depending on the position of pieces) I don't have real reason why stockfish judge all other pieces much more value than we thought, but i can guess it's because stockfish can use pieces more effective than human since it have insane calculation speed and depth.

What's so impressive for me is how strong SF is now after the introduction of NNUE. But even so, SF with NNUE still struggles with the following position (without multi-pv) for some reason -- it's a totaly computational mystery! 5rk1/pp3p1p/7b/2pR4/8/2P4P/P1PNr1P1/2K4R b - - 1 1 (winning move is.. Rxd2!! followed by Rd8 and c4!!---From Kaplan vs Bronstein, Hastings 1975).

@@Corteum Thank you. I had Stockfish 12 and Lc0 analyse that position for 5 minutes. Neither could find Rxd2. They both suggested Rxg2 with around -4 advantage to black. After I forced Rxd2, the advantage was -6.5 (sf) and -3.1 (lc0). Interesting that Lc0 didn't find it, either.

It would be very interesting if they would organize a little match between nnue and the exact same version of alphazero that crushed stockfish back in 2018. It can't be all that difficult technically and probably all the chess world would be interested to see the stockfish's progress in relation with the legendary alphazero.
@dimaratosgeorgiadis2672
@dimaratosgeorgiadis2672 3 жыл бұрын
@The Deeper Mind i know, and nnue will crush it obviously but it would be interesting to see how much fish improved in relation to alpha because it didn't just lose it got annihilated even with 100x more time than alpha and also because that match got incredible attention, so i think that many people would be interested to see an Alpha vs nnue. Not leela, alpha.
@intermitttence2022
@intermitttence2022 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing that we got that was kinda close was Leela, now Stockfish NNUE’s equal, vs Stockfish 8, where Leela beat Stockfish by a much larger margin than Alpha. It’s a shame that Alphazero was never released for public, but I’m grateful for the Leela team to continue the idea, who are just as talented as the DeepMind team were.

On the fishcooking google groups forum (maybe it was the lczero forum), someone said that Google is now training for different types of chess - (like 960). If so, maybe they're retraining Alpha on regular chess, too, just for the lulz, and we'll see matches with a stronger Alpha! (note that this is entirely speculation, except for the rumor that Google is going with other chess variations).

Great performance by Stockfish nnue... But sad to see Leela lose again. I have always supported Lc0 over Stockfish but this Stockfish NNUE I do have developed likeness because its just brilliant... Does anyone know how did it become stronger than Leela so soon... But the good thing is finally Leela has got an equal nemesis.
@DaneWallinga
@DaneWallinga 3 жыл бұрын
Well NNUE stands for "Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks". Why is the acronym backwards? No idea. But basically it's a particular architecture of neural network where the evaluation can be updated incrementally. As the engine goes down the search tree, it doesn't actually have to recalculate the entire network for each move - much of the prior board state's evaluation can be reused. This makes it comparatively fast, so Stockfish can still do very deep searches. So it's really a whole new approach that's different from what Stockfish was doing before, but is also quite different from what Leela is doing. Leela has a *much* larger network than Stockfish NNUE, and rather than doing an alpha-beta tree search, uses a randomized Monte Carlo tree search. In any case, the reason Stockfish saw such a huge jump is just that it's doing something very novel - it's not just a minor tweak to the previous version. So it was probably going to be either a lot stronger than the old Stockfish, or a lot weaker - it would be quite lucky if a completely new evaluation method resulted in more or less the same playing strength.
@intermitttence2022
@intermitttence2022 3 жыл бұрын
Dane Wallinga *Much stronger playing strength. Stockfish is now much better at openings because it has NNUE. The only reason why it still seems comparable to Leela is because Leela made monstrous improvements as well.
