With today’s news that the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe has become the ninth South Dakota tribe to banish Kristi Noem, she has now accomplished a unique feat: she’s now the first state governor officially barred from every inch of tribal land in South Dakota. The entire Oceti Sakowin is united: Noem must apologize for her comments deriding Native children and families, falsely associating tribes with Mexican drug cartels, and defending stories in her failed book about pet slaughter and fabricated meetings with world leaders.

I am a white male, from the geometric center of Middle Class America. I grew up in an environment where white privilege was a given--so much so that we didn't even recognize or acknowledge it. In the '80s and '90s I worked with an Indian education program in Eugene, Oregon. I got to know scores of Native families, representing more than two dozen tribes. NOBODY is going to tell me that Native parents don't care about their kids. I saw--I experienced!--the deep love commitment that the older people in these tribes have toward the young people. Virtually everything I saw the Elders do was about making sure that future generations would inherit a better world and treat it and themselves with respect.

FTR, Noem claims her puppy killed 6 of her neighbor's chickens and was untrainable as a hunting dog. It's not clear how much training the puppy had. She should have turned the puppy over to animal control. I think it's past the statue of limitations for animal cruelty.

My mother used to take me and my sister out to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota to sit with the Sioux when we lived in Minot, ND when we were very young back during the early 1970s. You don't mess with the Lakota, Nakota, or Dakota like that, hell no! To this day, we support the young Sioux Indians!

I teach at a tribal high school. When I heard her say my students don't have hope, I became so angry. If there is no hope, then why are they applying for college? Why am I writing letters of recommendation? Why am I helping them apply for FAFSA and study for the ACT? Why do I keep an open line of communication with their parents ALL year long, even in the summer? All of my 18-yr-old students are registered to vote.

The viewpoint that we are one even with the obstacles we are trying to conquer helps give us strength to conquer those obstacles, in my experience. One of the most important things I learned from my Lakota friends and neighbors was the value of humility. He established the Office of Indian Water Rights, signed over 50 measures to support self-rule, doubled the budget for Bureau of Indian Affairs.
