I just read Braiding Sweetgrass, and as a biochemistry student, this book had me in tears about the world I care about. It gave me new motivation to see the world as something beautiful to cultivate and care for. It reached down through my little scientific mind and hugged my nature-loving heart.

I'm absolutely living for these cozy Sunday vids now! What a vibe to start the day. I love Mary Oliver's work and can't think of any poets whose work I enjoy more on the whole. But I have enjoyed quite a bit from the Irish poet John O'Donohue and also Wendell Berry. His poem "The Peace of Wild Things" has been a go-to chill-out poem for me. If you love the nature-centered vibe of Mary Oliver, I would also highly recommend a pair of poetry anthologies titled "Life Prayers" and "Earth Prayers" edited by Elizabeth Roberts and Elias Amidon. They're basically collected poems/prayers/blessings/laments from around the world that honor all the wonderful and challenging things in life and inspire reverence for the earth. As for self-help stuff, I generally can't stand things that have vague new-age stuff in them. So I feel the complaint about the whole "you think yourself healthy/sick" thing 100%. Which makes it difficult to recommend self-help books, because it seems like a lot of them have that problem and the problem of ignoring the material conditions that make life difficult in the first place. That said, I have found a handful of things that have been really helpful for me in understanding my own psychology better and in developing better mental hygiene overall. I'm just gonna list them here in case you're interested in checking any of them out! On Becoming A Person by Carl Rogers Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before by Julie Smith The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna West Good Reasons for Bad Feelings by Randolph Nesse Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb Becoming Myself by Irvin Yalom Creatures of a Day by Irvin Yalom

In January I read At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop which was such a strong start for my bookish 2023. A very intense, gruesome and beautifully written book. So good. And I read The Poppy War which is insanely good, still cannot process it. For Febrary I‘m already reading The Priory of the Orange Tree and I added the two graphic novels you recommended to my list. And thank you Ally for this wonderful bookish content, this is my safe space and always gives me a good feeling and mood. 💚🐉⭐️

Wild Geese is one of my favourite poems! To be human is to sing your own song is another one of my favourites, and the inspiration for what I want to be my first tattoo. Wild Geese is also one of the only poems I have deliberately memorized. I didn't know that there was a collection of all her poems until I heard you mention it in your last video, so I might have to ask for that for my birthday... 👀

Must add a HUGE trigger warning for Turtles All the Way Down. While it was the book that let me know I had ocd (something I didn't know went beyond repetitive actions like it is represented on movies and tv). It was extremely triggering to my ocd. So I am thankful for it because for the first time in my life I am on medication for it and thriving. At the same time I would never read it again and caution other people with ocd specifically with ocd that manifests as hypochondria and germophobia to read it.

In terms of self-help/spiritual stuff, I'm waiting for my library hold of How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis to come in. It was a Books with Cindy rec and I will report back when I have read it. I have read and recommend Here If You Need Me by Kate Braestrup. The audiobook is best as she reads it herself. It's a memoir about grief and nature and spirituality. It does follow a Christian framework because she becomes the pastor for the Maine Game Wardens, so just a heads up and something to know if that's not your vibe. Happy reading and I hope you see the sun soon!

Check out The Book of Delights: Essays by Ross Gay. I just finished it and I think you will love it. It's a year-long series of small essays on finding delight in all things. I read Prayer for the Crown-Shy this month and holy moly it rocked my soul 🥹 I already loved Becky Chambers, but the Monk and Robot duology wasn’t high up on my list until you raved about it last year. Psalm was really good, but Prayer was an *experience* I just really needed this book at this exact moment of my life…parts of it felt written just for me, the best reader feeling, and it feels even sweeter because I only made it a priority after hearing you talk about it. Thank you for celebrating such light-filled books ❤

Here’s a recommendation on the ‘changing-perspective’ category: (in Dutch) De meeste mensen deugen (or in English) Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman This book changed my perspective on humans, humankind and this society so much! It explores why we as a society always think that people are ‘just born’ evil, when in reality there a so much cases in which humans are loving and caring and acting from their best intentions. And: it’s originally written in Dutch! One of my absolute favorite non-fiction books! Just thought i would share ☺️

January was also a reading slump for me, I finally DNF'd Margaret Atwood's "The Edible Woman" yesterday. Poetry-wise, I really love the collection "Set Me on Fire: A Poem for Every Feeling" by Ella Risbridger, which is organized not by date but by theme, and the footnotes are delightful. The poems are varied: short, long, geographically varied, traditional, modern. I ordered the book for myself as a graduation present last year after hearing Leena Norms recommend it in a video.

Honestly as far as spiritual self help goes, you cannot go wrong with the Tao Te Ching. If you've ever heard the quote "nature does not hurry and yet everything is accomplished," that's from the Tao Te Ching and the whole book is a series of really beautiful philosophical poems all about harmony, timing with the universe, etc. I don't think I'd be who I am today without it.

i haven't read a lot of smut in the style of the ones you mentioned HOWEVER i did pick up ACOTAR - i was very sceptical bc on paper it is far from my "thing". i rarely read fantasy, i'm not overly big on romance (esp. straight romance, as a queer woman) and adventure. but i have to say i am now on the third book and i have been swallowed up into this universe, i cannot put it down ! i definitely understand the critiques but, in the same way as i enjoyed twilight so much when i was younger, it is just plain fun to read and so good for getting someone out of a reading slump - would recommend if you want a big of YA style (tho the smut is not YA lmao) squee-worthy reading fun (check the trigger warnings of course but i haven't come across any SA etc that i can recall tho i read the first one quite a while ago) xxx

The too little too late reference...I feel seen. I had two S-tier reads in January, and shockingly both were nonfiction?? The invisible kingdom by megan o-rourke is about chronic illness (informational & rigorously researched but also part memoir about the author's own experience with autoimmune conditions) & between the world and me by ta-nehisi coates which I have been recommending to literally everyone I know since I read it! Incredible audiobook as well.

ooooh you're moving???? how exciting!!!! i'm currently in somewhat of a slump, I only read one actual book in january but loads of manga, now I haven't picked up anything even tho I really want to read, so I really know the feeling of "wanting to read but not getting there" I do want to read so so bad but I just can't get myself to pick anything up. I do recommend audio books when it happens because you can listen while you walk, while you clean or when you're gonna snooze a bit, hopefully we can all get out of these dumb slumps, as long as we're reading!!! thank you as always for a new video, you're such a joy!

The manifestation side of 'self help' is horrendous. I'm sorry, you think people live in poverty/are hungry because they don't speak out loud and truly believe that they could be rich? You think they can will into existence free health care and housing? It's that insidious 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' mentality. Ick ick ick. You're right, the community aspect/looking out for each other is often missing. Very much appreciated the tips out of a reading slump. Needed!
