I’m a photographer of many years standing and I’ve always tried to make honest pictures from my choice of composition and visualisation. I find adding blocks of someone else’s stock photography is dishonest. For me personally this latest addition is not necessary. I know that there are situations where these features are useful but they are also wide open to misuse. I also realise that they can and will be used for entertainment and that’s fine but it does once again create worries about AI. These kind of developments (no pun intended) are gradually moving me back to film and darkroom printing.

People keep saying : "but, manipulation existed in the darkroom already, so Photoshop is nothing new". Except that darkroom techniques were used by only a handful of people, were not as seamless and easy, and didn't give you "perfect", undetectable results. Since the advent of PS, you really can't trust what you see. The 1st thing that comes to my mind when I look at other photographer's work today is : "what did the scene really look like ?". And I hate it. To me, using PS makes you cross a line : you leave the world of photography, and you enter the world of "digital art". It's still art, but I don't think it should be placed on equal ground. I used PS a lot in the past, I used Luminar. I replaced skies, I retouched skin, I removed objects from the background, I added light... It's fun, it's tempting. But I don't do it anymore, because I want my work to stay in the realm of photography...

It's honestly the result of competition. Other editing tools outside of adobe have been using AI longer so Adobe has to innovate to stay relevant. Unfortunately it means advancing in AI and creating "fake" artist. As a photographer I am also deeply concerned but what can we do.

@@TravMan3211 You're right. People went to Luminar for sky replacement when PS was not as efficient, for ex. As to what we can do, I think we won't be able to reverse the way things go. But we can make "statements" through our work by not using those technologies. Of course, at my very humble, hobbyist level, I won't be able to reach a lot of people. But I know some famous photographers who refuse to use those technologies, and maybe they will have more impact. Supporting them and not supporting the others could also have impact, I think.

What people call photography nowadays is no longer photography. It's digital art / design. I think it's one of the reasons why film photography is on the rise, despite it being so cumbersome...

@@Kuwandi It's easy to be "wow" when you simply don't have to do anything. The more we progress, the less photgraphy takes skill : we went from large format and wet plates to film cameras then to film cameras with aperture priority and autofocus, then to digital cameras with eye AF and auto ISO. It's the same with post processing : we went from darkroom techniques to the first versions of PS and now to AI, automated software (like retouch4me, content aware fill, etc...). It's less and less a craft.

I’m glad you said about the fact that this could all be done manually already. It’s silly to say this will change how we look at photos. People have been comping images for decades. Very cool tech though, and I can see more and more people doing what only the experts could do.

Scott, thank you for a great, thoughtful presentation! I know you said in answer to a question that the generative fill images (like the owl, the gondola, etc) might be considered stock images and that would be OK. I agree it would be OK as long as the photographers whose work is used agree to their usage and are compensated. I have yet to see any comment from About where the images are being drawn from. Is it from any online image, or a specific database of photos whose owners have agreed to this usage? Perhaps someone Adobe who knows the inner workings of the new release could chime in?

I think this is mind blowing! I have used Photoshop since version 7. I have had a very serious relationship with Photoshop for a long time. The convenience that this AI fill facilitates is impressive. Is there a telltale or some sort of sign that Adobe places in the file (coding) to prove that the image in question has been manipulated? I’m a portrait photographer and I do not want my work to be changed after fact or for my clients to be disparaged. There needs to be a way of protecting photographers as well as the people in the photographs. Hopefully, Adobe takes this to heart.

unless they don't improve it later...the 1024x1024 is what will limit it. Unless you go and replace block by block....you can zoom in and see the resolution difference. Other videos on generative ai have talked about this.

Yesterday I used the remove tool to get rid of some people and other items in a photo, today I did it again using this new feature and it do so much better in a lot less time. I'm sold. I don't care so much about adding items, but removing is often critical.

While there are some amazing capabilities with the new generative fill options, in my humble opinion is being overhyped. For me, the use of generative fill will primarily be limited to removing unwanted portions of a complicated image that cannot be done easily with other tools. The ability to add fill beyond the edges of images using the crop tool is interesting but I hope I framed the image correctly in the first place.

So now, just stay in Auto mode and shoot sub-par images. You can always fix it in post. A reason why I still shoot film for fine art prints.

Truly amazing capability of the new Photoshop, but now we have issues with determining "real photography" that galleries are going to have to confront. Photo contests, the public that buys photo prints, galleries, advertising agencies are all going to have to question these results. An emphasis on defining "digital art" from "photography" is going to have to be made.

Only for photo journalism. When it comes to buying things as fine art I don't think the distinction needs to be made. Art is art so for galleries all that matters is are collectors moved enough to buy a certain piece. I guess photo for photo contests it matter but then maybe we should not be entering "photo contests" but rather art contests where our photos are competing against paintings and other mediums and they are open entries from all mediums. In those types of contests they are a lot more permissive about editing and digital manipulation.

As a 47-year journalist, I won’t be faking my photos. Sometimes I could use an illustration from time to time, and I will label it as an illustration. And now for the results. If you want a sinking car, or a breaching submarine beneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, it will do that. I offered the picture of the bridge. But if you want a sailing ship beneath the Chesapeake Bay bridge you absolutely cannot have one. I’ve tried a dozen times. Probably a lot more than a dozen times.

I've a question: I tried the AI and it seems great but when I tried to expand a background, in my case an open field with some trees, it generates a blurry extension. it seems like it is not the same resolution as the original picture. quite frustrating

Adobe has been hitting home runs lately (e.g., denoise) but Generative AI is a bit overhyped. At this point the concept is great, but the outputs are still inconsistent and a bit buggy: it's not really ready for prime time yet. However, as the machine-learning improves and the user reps go way up it will slowly become phenomenal. It's not there yet, but buckle up, because it's going to be a short learning curve!

I noticed that Lightroom defaults to the open program. I didn't have to change external editor. I had PS Beta opened and when I selected an image and hit Edit in Photoshop, it opened in the beta version. I closed the Beta version and opened the Regular version and when I told it to edit in Photoshop it opened in the regular version 🙂It then kept defaulting to the last opened version of Photoshop. If I edited something in the regular version and closed it, opened LR and told it to edit in PS it opens in the last version of PS I used.

Removing the unwanted spouses' images, after a divorce, that may even have kids in it, will be a whole new business model. Can also be used for a business model that I always wanted to do (but did not put much effort in) was dating portraits.

FYI no you cannot use the images created with this tool commercially! It says so when you get it. And the max size is 1080p not 1024

Well, it does some things brilliantly, like expanding your image. Or simple tasks. But i often generates outright garish stuff that look totally unbelievable because lighting, color balance are way off. Or just because the results suck. I tried an image of two fishermen on the beach and i asked PS to put a shark fin in the sea behind them. It didn't even look like a shark fin.

It's ok. An ok start. I know it's in beta, but at this point, it's like a Google image search that plasters a few results into your image. And it gets some things right, but it needs so much tweaking it's better and faster to go source hunting, paste, mask and adjust it yourself. But I have no doubt that this tech will get much better, fast. But for now, it's not mind-blowing. It's ok-ish.

I guess the other thing about all this is what ramifications it will have on the legal system. "here's a photo proving the suspect was breaking into my car and stole my $5,000 lighting kit!" Or ..."here's a photo showing the suspect was out fishing when the crime was committed". This could present some real problems in the wrong hands, and the world is full of wrong hands!

Potato Jet recently built his home studio which included very large TV’s in the background which serve to give a unique background, which is all fake. But his default one looks so real. He cycled through different backgrounds and it was just insane. And that’s only 1/2 fake. This stuff is like 100% fake. Interesting how much computing power would be needed to add similar effects in Premiere Pro.

And this happens very frequently and it's extremely annoying - For example, today I tried to change a fingernail and I got this message "The generated images were removed because they violate user guidelines" ... I like to. get images right in camera but I just used the new PS Beta to take my subject but generate a completely false scenario in a dystopian city scape and whilst I know the image is fake it looks real and I have posted it to a photography group . I feel uncomfortable about it . I have ethical questions !

As I recall, an old Associated Press manual generally forbid making any alterations to news photographs but did permit, for example, removing the face of a kid who managed to appear in a crime scene photo mugging at the camera. So, even some journalistic standards have permitted allowances for modifications that eliminate really jarring, meaningless distractions. Although I’m a hobbyist, not a journalist, I certainly won’t be adding any elements generated from Adobe stock photographs, but I’m very happy that generative AI will enable me to quickly remove distracting elements that otherwise would have required a lot of time and effort.

Maybe you should have recomposed the photographs with distracting elements before pressing the shutter, thereby negating the need to fiddle in Photoshop. I think back in the day the disciplines learnt using film taught us to be better photographers.

Generative AI will forever change our perception of photography. From here on when we see an awesome picture we will wonder if it was “taken” by a skilled human or “created” by AI. Ansel’s generation would’ve most likely thought about photoshop the same way asking did a skilled human take it or was it modified by a computer program…
