When I was a kid, at a card show, I wanted to buy 2 single cards, my dad said “For $60, let’s get a whole box of cards instead”. The box of cards we got = 1987 Fleer Basketball wax (not bad), the 2 cards I wanted = 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan RCs! 😩

The crazy thing is when I was first editing this video that same card sold for over 5k from that seller. I’m assuming that card didn’t pass the authentication process and came back as a reprint. That same seller relisted it for sale as a reprint. Hopefully it was a reprint that I passed on and not the original card. I still wish I would of paid the $30 to find out

When I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s my dad would sometimes travel a few hours away from home for work, and once in a while he would take me with. One of these times we stopped by a random card shop. And there it was, the Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie card. It was $8, which seemed too expensive, but my dad actually bought it for me! What a guy. A year or two later it went missing along with a bunch of my other cards. I eventually figured out who stole them from me, but I was too shy/timid to get them back. One of these days I'll replace it.

I've always got the impression that it is a faux pas at flea markets to take your phone out to check for prices. Maybe times have changed or maybe that was just something I heard that wasn't true.
@PickingandPunchingCards
@PickingandPunchingCards 2 күн бұрын
There was an old stigma about checking prices on your phone at the flea market. That has gone away over time. It's not more socially acceptable to do it. There are still a couple of vendors that look down on that. They are people that do not sale online.

I'm old, i have been collecting since the late 70's, it used to always carry all three Beckett's(Football, Basket and Baseball) to cards shops, card shows and flea markets and i checked prices often, as well, as most dealers. Today, if you are offended by people checking prices, then don't sell! I have no issues with it, just as long as the leave the card(s) in the case, or on the table an step to the side to check. What upsets me, are these individuals, at card shows, who literally see you trying to a look at cards on the table, but will stand there and look up "Sold/Comps."

THIS is EXACTLY the type of video that haunts me! I got back into the hobby during COVID and over the next few years I've accumulated 50,000 or so cards and ... I'm NOT smart enough to be able to just "leaf through them" and pull out all of the valuable ones! AND I don't have enough time to go card-by-card looking up each card! So, therein lies the thing of nightmares ... wondering what I'm missing, passing over, about to sell for one one thousandth its worth, etc., etc., etc. Sorry you missed out, but I DO appreciate the honesty!
@PickingandPunchingCards

Thanks! Your best bet would be to find someone who has more knowledge than you. Have them go through and pull out anything that they know is valuable. There some card shops that will pull up comp values in front of you and offer you a % below that. You just got to find a trust worthy one.

Quick question for the group: "if I walked up to you and offered to give you five dollars for one dollar, would you take it?" Of course you would! So, why do so many people overlook lower valued cards that are in .50 cent bins and $1.00 bins, that are easily selling for $5.00 to $10.00 on eBay? I get it trying to find that hidden gem, but I literally come across $10.00, $15.00 even $20.00 cards in $1.00 bins and $5.00, $10.00 cards in .50 cents bins. I found a 2022 Topps Chrome Update Debut Purple Refractor Bobby Witt Jr in the $1.00 bin at an antique shop, graded it, got a PSA 10 and two just sold for more than $100.00. I'm holding onto to it, until a week or so before baseball season starts up and then, I will move it.

He bought one just because it was cheap and had no idea what he had until we got to talking about it around 1993. He went back home to get it and confirmed it was what he said. I certainly believe he told you the story but that's a tad bit hard to believe. I remember going to a card show around 1990 and a guy was selling wax packs for $40 each. The idea someone at a card shop would be that clueless on the value of the complete set is beyond far fetched. If your friend said a normal civilian who wasn't in the business sold it to him for a buck and not someone who owned a shop it would still be tough to believe but at least that's somewhat realistic

When I was a kid I used to sit on the roof of my Mom's Impala and go through my cards. I had a bunch of rookies, not worth tons of money but a cool collection. Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, John Elway, Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders and a bunch more. Plus a bunch of other Barry Sanders cards since he was my favorite player. And I got called in the house for whatever reason and completely forgot that I left my cards on the roof. 2 things i want to tell you : 1- you can’t consider something you didn’t buy cause you didn’t felt it was worth much as a ‘lost’. A lost is something you actually purchased and sell for less than you bought it for. 2- you did got out of there with a pretty good deal for what you picked up. I understand how you feel but i think i can be the voice of all collectors here by saying that we all have passed on cards that thought were not worth much by going in bins. It’s all about the knowledge of the cards and it’s simply impossible to know everything since the variety is so wide if you consider you need to know about 4 major sports + everything that is not sports related.. So don’t sleep on it for too long, you’ll rebound off this.. :-)

What I mean by that, is I have been collecting, full time, since the late '70's and occasionally, I will take a break from the hobby(full time), meaning I wouldn't be going to shops, shows or flea markets, as much as I used to. I would by packs, here or there, but I wasn't doing it full time. Anyway, the times I decided to take a break from the hobby were in '03(Anthony, Wade and LeBron's rookie year) '07(Durant's rookie year) '09(Steph's rookie year) '17(Mahomes' rookie year) and '18(Josh Allen and Shohei Ohtani's rookie year). Now some of you may be asking, "How is this a regret?" It hurts, because, when I was in the hobby "full time," I mean, I was in the hobby! Spending thousands of dollars on mid-range to high-end hobby boxes and had I been in the hobby(full time) during those years, I know, due to large amount of high-end hobby products I used to regularly purchase, I know without a shadow of doubt that I would have several Caremelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Josh Allen, Shohei Ohtani and LeBron James' rookie cards, not from retail or low-end product, but mid-range to high-end product! Plus, my "Taking A Break From The Hobby" timing has to be the "All Time" worse! p.s. As much as I regret taking a break from the hobby in '03, that was during the time when i was playing Texas Hold'em poker at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa several days per week, so i made a ton of money, a TON of money playing poker, so you can kind of understand why "my" focus was not into the hobby during that year.

Ugh. I thought for sure he was going to get an opportunity or second chance when he went to Dallas. Only for him to get beat out by Cooper Rush for the backup position. I just went and looked at his stats. He has only played 8 games in four years. I really think we haven’t got an opportunity to potentially see what he can do. He is only 24 years old. I hope he gets a chance to play so you can try to recoup some of that money.

When I first started collecting, I way overpaid for an '82 Ripken traded at a show and almost instantly had buyer's regret as it had a weird spot on the surface that I hadn't noticed until I got home. I recently got it graded and it got an 8 from SGC and I'm okay with it now, of course. Hope you have some redemption with your future buys. Best of luck.

That Brady could be a reprint. I've seen them before in the wild and they're never legit. My biggest regret was back before his first super bowl win, my local shop had a stack of a brady playoff contenders autos for $100 each. He must have had at least 10 of them. I was in the shop looking at them the day before the Rams game and I remember the owner saying, "those are a lottery ticket. If they're losing at halftime tomorrow, I'll probably drop them to $50.. and if they're winning, I'll have them at $200 each tomorrow" I bought one and held it for years. Sold it for I think $2200 in 07 ish. Easily a $15k card now

It was a 1/1 and at the time sold for less than 10k. The seller ended up keeping it after it was returned . Years later it eventually hit 7 figures, I want to say it sold for 1.8 million. I am 72 and had a collectables b&m store from 1987 to 2017. Sports cards, comics, Hot Wheels, trains, etc. When Pokemon came out I bought a couple of cases of the first US starter decks and the booster packs. But most of my customers were older guys who had been in WWII and objected to me selling Japanese stuff. Most did not sell and I unloaded them to a couple of twenty something guys who had a comic shop I helped them start up. I shoulda coulda kept them in the back room with all the junk wax era stock. I STILL have cases of Upper Deck, Score and Topps from 1988-92 - 8 years later from retiring and closing my store. Nothing is new again. In the early 1990s, there were about 5 to 10 guys every morning waiting for Sam's Club to open for business only members. Sam's used to handle cases then and we fight over all the new releases like Upper Deck, Topps, Donruss, Fleer, etc. Made some good money on the first year of Stadium Club, which was one of the first really hot products and packs had an SRP of $1.99, but I was getting $8 a pack in the store. Toppls distributed mainly through tobacco and candy wholesalers then, and Sam's and other Clubs like Pace too. I also hit grocery stores, gas stations, and drug stores and bought them all up. Now they are still junk...

For me it was a 2008 Topps Gold Chrome Lebron James refractor for $850. I bought a Packard Bell computer instead😥☹

I’m sure you got some good use out of the computer but that would have been an amazing card to have.

This is why education is the best investment when it comes to flipping cards. You had the answers in your pocket with your phone and you can't get signal lol Guess it was meant to be buddy!

It happens a lot at flea markets and card shows. Sometimes you just do t get a signal. I should have went with my gut. Like you said, it wasn’t meant to be.

Im starting to think , I should be a super nerd and write some notes at the flea market, for what I want to check later when I get a signal or back in my car because i just don't want to look like a tool looking everything up my phone in front of the vendor. Yesterday I saw a 1989 Fulcher Starting Lineup loose, looked it up today the day after and saw its sells for $100 to $150 new so would of been a good get, even loose, it happens to all of us, And Yes missing out of $40 to $50 bucks is not $5000, if I do that a 50 times a year, thats $2500, it adds, up, so yes I m taking a pen and paper today Hahaha

I have taken photo of items so I could look them up later on. I have even told vendors that I wanted to look it up before I bought it. 99% of the time they are cool with it. They just want to make their money from it.
