When I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s my dad would sometimes travel a few hours away from home for work, and once in a while he would take me with. One of these times we stopped by a random card shop. And there it was, the Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie card. It was $8, which seemed too expensive, but my dad actually bought it for me! What a guy. A year or two later it went missing along with a bunch of my other cards. I eventually figured out who stole them from me, but I was too shy/timid to get them back. THIS is EXACTLY the type of video that haunts me! I got back into the hobby during COVID and over the next few years I've accumulated 50,000 or so cards and ... I'm NOT smart enough to be able to just "leaf through them" and pull out all of the valuable ones! AND I don't have enough time to go card-by-card looking up each card! So, therein lies the thing of nightmares ... wondering what I'm missing, passing over, about to sell for one one thousandth its worth, etc., etc., etc. Sorry you missed out, but I DO appreciate the honesty!

Thanks! Your best bet would be to find someone who has more knowledge than you. Have them go through and pull out anything that they know is valuable. There some card shops that will pull up comp values in front of you and offer you a % below that. You just got to find a trust worthy one.

Quick question for the group: "if I walked up to you and offered to give you five dollars for one dollar, would you take it?" Of course you would! So, why do so many people overlook lower valued cards that are in .50 cent bins and $1.00 bins, that are easily selling for $5.00 to $10.00 on eBay? I get it trying to find that hidden gem, but I literally come across $10.00, $15.00 even $20.00 cards in $1.00 bins and $5.00, $10.00 cards in .50 cents bins. I found a 2022 Topps Chrome Update Debut Purple Refractor Bobby Witt Jr in the $1.00 bin at an antique shop, graded it, got a PSA 10 and two just sold for more than $100.00. I'm holding onto to it, until a week or so before baseball season starts up and then, I will move it.

I certainly believe he told you the story but that's a tad bit hard to believe. I remember going to a card show around 1990 and a guy was selling wax packs for $40 each. The idea someone at a card shop would be that clueless on the value of the complete set is beyond far fetched. If your friend said a normal civilian who wasn't in the business sold it to him for a buck and not someone who owned a shop it would still be tough to believe but at least that's somewhat realistic

2 things i want to tell you : 1- you can’t consider something you didn’t buy cause you didn’t felt it was worth much as a ‘lost’. A lost is something you actually purchased and sell for less than you bought it for. 2- you did got out of there with a pretty good deal for what you picked up. I understand how you feel but i think i can be the voice of all collectors here by saying that we all have passed on cards that thought were not worth much by going in bins. It’s all about the knowledge of the cards and it’s simply impossible to know everything since the variety is so wide if you consider you need to know about 4 major sports + everything that is not sports related.. So don’t sleep on it for too long, you’ll rebound off this.. :-)

My "Stories of Regret" are a bit different from most of the comments here. With me, it wasn't missed purchases, but "Bad Timing." What I mean by that, is I have been collecting, full time, since the late '70's and occasionally, I will take a break from the hobby(full time), meaning I wouldn't be going to shops, shows or flea markets, as much as I used to. I would by packs, here or there, but I wasn't doing it full time. Anyway, the times I decided to take a break from the hobby were in '03(Anthony, Wade and LeBron's rookie year) '07(Durant's rookie year) '09(Steph's rookie year) '17(Mahomes' rookie year) and '18(Josh Allen and Shohei Ohtani's rookie year). Now some of you may be asking, "How is this a regret?" It hurts, because, when I was in the hobby "full time," I mean, I was in the hobby! Spending thousands of dollars on mid-range to high-end hobby boxes and had I been in the hobby(full time) during those years, I know, due to large amount of high-end hobby products I used to regularly purchase, I know without a shadow of doubt that I would have several Caremelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Josh Allen, Shohei Ohtani and LeBron James' rookie cards, not from retail or low-end product, but mid-range to high-end product! Plus, my "Taking A Break From The Hobby" timing has to be the "All Time" worse! p.s. As much as I regret taking a break from the hobby in '03, that was during the time when i was playing Texas Hold'em poker at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa several days per week, so i made a ton of money, a TON of money playing poker, so you can kind of understand why "my" focus was not into the hobby during that year.

That Brady could be a reprint. I've seen them before in the wild and they're never legit. My biggest regret was back before his first super bowl win, my local shop had a stack of a brady playoff contenders autos for $100 each. He must have had at least 10 of them. I was in the shop looking at them the day before the Rams game and I remember the owner saying, "those are a lottery ticket. If they're losing at halftime tomorrow, I'll probably drop them to $50.. and if they're winning, I'll have them at $200 each tomorrow" I bought one and held it for years. Sold it for I think $2200 in 07 ish. Easily a $15k card now

My bike (Redline RL20ii - look that up) was stolen when I parked it in front a card shop in Spokane.... ironically called "Steal of a Deal Sports Cards". I used that bike to deliver news papers in the morning before wrestling practice. I needed another bike so I sold my 86 Jordan RC for $200 to buy another bike so I could keep my paper route job as a 13 year old. The card now is maybe $4-10K and the stolen Redline $6-10K.

That's definitely a rough one. I certainly can't top that but there's always that guy that purchased a Giannis card years ago on eBay & ended up returning it. I can't recall the exact specifics but the card had a pretty decent imperfection...I think a stain or ink mark...so he returned it and got his money back. It was a 1/1 and at the time sold for less than 10k. The seller ended up keeping it after it was returned . Years later it eventually hit 7 figures, I want to say it sold for 1.8 million. Granted that's a very different scenario but that guy that returned it couldn't possibly have ever forgiven himself

@PickingandPunchingCards Sure is. I looked it up and it was Giannis' rookie patch 1/1 auto from National Treasures. It was graded a 9 by BGS. Talk about an absolute high for one guy and the lowest of lows for the other dude

I am 72 and had a collectables b&m store from 1987 to 2017. Sports cards, comics, Hot Wheels, trains, etc. When Pokemon came out I bought a couple of cases of the first US starter decks and the booster packs. But most of my customers were older guys who had been in WWII and objected to me selling Japanese stuff. Most did not sell and I unloaded them to a couple of twenty something guys who had a comic shop I helped them start up. I shoulda coulda kept them in the back room with all the junk wax era stock. I STILL have cases of Upper Deck, Score and Topps from 1988-92 - 8 years later from retiring and closing my store. Nothing is new again. In the early 1990s, there were about 5 to 10 guys every morning waiting for Sam's Club to open for business only members. Sam's used to handle cases then and we fight over all the new releases like Upper Deck, Topps, Donruss, Fleer, etc. Made some good money on the first year of Stadium Club, which was one of the first really hot products and packs had an SRP of $1.99, but I was getting $8 a pack in the store. Toppls distributed mainly through tobacco and candy wholesalers then, and Sam's and other Clubs like Pace too. I also hit grocery stores, gas stations, and drug stores and bought them all up. Now they are still junk...
