I live in the Westernmost Pacific Northwest surrounded by tribal lands and three distinct tribes and I’ve been to Pine Ridge in South Dakota as well. Up here we don’t have the Asian, Latino and black gangs who typically traffic fentanyl & meth. So some impoverished /parentless/latchkey among the tribes do a lot of the trafficking. This will NEVER be ameliorated by going after supply only. The only shred of hope is in moving heaven and earth to keep kids from getting started on the stuff in the first place. My neighborhood is $400k for a cracker box home. A camp of homeless fent & meth addicts just died 2 weeks ago approx 700 feet from my porch. A whole group of lost souls found dead.

I'm Native American and live on a state reservation. I can tell you one thing; these cartel members just didn't waltz in and make themselves at home. @@christigoth You're speaking of the MMIW (missing, murdered, indigenous women) cases. I can't speak for all these cases, but I'm personally convinced that most are inside jobs. In nearly all cases, the women who go missing were caught up in a spiral of drunkenness, drug use, sexual promiscuity, and just general irresponsibility concerning their own welfare. Another aspect, or theory that I've heard, is that women are being sold off to serve as sex slaves to the oil industry. I can see this being the case; especially, up north, but again, this couldn't be done without inside help. In my area, we have had a number of unsolved murders over the years, but many locals know who the killers are, but can't prove it, and the family members of these suspects refuse to say anything to the authorities. I'm not trying to tear down my own people, but there is a deep under current of corruption that organized crime from the outside, takes full advantage of. This isn't going to stop until women start taking responsibility for their own safety, and that includes living sober, clean, and chaste lives. Immorality is the biggest factor behind MMIW. Another factor that plays into this, is that the BIA police are understaffed and underfunded, with vast swaths of territory to cover. Native women would do well to travel in groups, or if they have to be alone, to carry a weapon of some kind, preferably a gun, but this again entails adopting a level of responsibility that many of the women most at risk of abduction and murder, unfortunately don't display.

I found my self involved in a conversation with a large group of Moms and Grandmas and Aunties on the reservation that I vist to shop .They were angry , considering a disruptive protest on the reservation . They are sick of the deaths of their children, and were very angry at suggestion of relocating refugees and illegal immigrants onto reservations. Doing such a thing and having drug cartels is another form of colonization. I have a friend on a North Dakota reservation that says her reservation is considering boarder crossing check points onto and out of the reservation, to stop cartels , and smugglers . No, the Indian tribe does not have the authority to grant the state the right to enforce state laws on Federal land( reservation). Only the Federal government can grant such a right. The tribes do not have sovereignty as a separate nation, they have municipal authority, the same "sovereignty" as a city or state.

I live in a rural county in California that has two Indian casinos on tribal land. There has been no new housing development in this county in at least 25 years. Yet the casinos have been allowed to have massive expansion. These expansions include huge hotels, expanded gambling areas, restaurants and other entertainment venues. These casinos will employ many hundreds of new workers. There is already a critical housing shortage in this area as is the case in all of California. As far as I can tell there is no plan to house all of these new casino employees. Given the generally low income in this county and the surrounding counties, it has been somewhat baffling to me how such huge casino expansion can be fiscally sound. Are there really that many people willing to participate in gambling large sums of their money to generate the multi-millions of dollars necessary to sustain such huge casinos? After watching this presentation by Gov. Noem I'm kind of wondering if the local casinos are just a front for the cartels -- that would explain a lot.
