Be that as it may. There's more to that story. In 1957 England wanted to control Irans oilfields. The agreement between Iran and England was skewed in Englands favor. In response the (democratically elected) Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized the industry. England, the US and the CIA staged a coup, installed the Shah of Iran and put Mosaddegh under house arrest. He died shortly after. The secret police under The shah tortured, and murdered many Iranians. Later refusal to turn the Shah over for prosecution to Iran when the Ayatollah was installed created hatred which caused the hostage crises in 1979. If The British hadn't been so greedy and left Iran's democratic country alone all that drama would've been avoided. No need for an ayatollah later and look at Iran today. The Turn over of the Panama Canal was part of an US security council resolution in 1974 which lead to the 1974 Tack-Kissinger agreement, recognized Panama's Sovereign over the canal, and was the frame work for the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977 that transferred the Panama canal to Panama on December 31, 1999. Trump thinks he will march in a violate international law, and while the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903 was a perpetual lease to the United states of the canal zone, it resulted in several military conflicts since 1964, and there is a National Holiday celebrated in panama on January 9th, titles Martyrs' Day, which is from January 9, 1964 when 22 Panamanian Students was killed and 4 military offices was killed by US forces in the canal zone. Trump is an Idiot who does not understand the full conflict over the panama canal and the UN resolution, and treaties. The USA does not have the authority to step in and demand the Panama canal back, and it is international recognized as property of Panama , to do so will result in international sanctions on the United States, and Panama has signed a defense pact with China who as invested heavily into panama and the Canal, so it would be the Start of WW3.

The “new” canal was not even built from the US: The newer Panama Canal expansion, known as the Panama Canal Expansion Project or Third Set of Locks, was built by an international consortium called Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC). This group included companies from multiple countries: • Sacyr (Spain) • Salini Impregilo (Italy) • Jan De Nul (Belgium) • CUSA (Panama) The project was completed in 2016, adding a new set of locks (Aguaclara on the Atlantic side and Cocolí on the Pacific side) and doubling the Canal’s capacity. This allows it to accommodate much larger ships, known as Neopanamax vessels, which are vital for modern global trade. The project was managed by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), a fully Panamanian organization, ensuring the entire expansion remained under Panamanian sovereignty.

And wildly no one else is trying to acquire the canal. But crazy enough, we don’t own it now because the government would use it as an excuse to blow taxes through the roof.

@erzabetf95443 күн бұрын
@KennethCryan-v5k Well … more than one thing can be true. 🤷🏼♀️ Trump is an abomination. That doesn’t mean Biden is not also useless at this point. But Biden at least hasn’t suggested petulantly demanding that Panama … Do … what, exactly? Reinstate our lease? And then, I guess, the US government would run the Panama Canal - or maybe Leon would run it as WaterX - and … not charge American ships to use the Canal? So Trump’s cronies can hoard some more cash, and the American taxpayer can fund yet another perk for modern-day robber barons? Trump isn’t even pretending anymore that he has the interests of regular Americans in mind. And he hasn’t even been sworn in yet. So … yeah, no wonder you thought this was about Biden. 😂
@erzabetf95443 күн бұрын
@KennethCryan-v5k None of Biden’s faults mean that Trump doesn’t have faults. If you could let go of irrelevant comparisons, we might be able to hold our government accountable for their actions. Trump is an elderly man, past a prime that wasn’t particularly impressive - other than his ability to manipulate a bored press in NYC, a place as full of unsophisticated, self-important rubes as any other US backwater. Trump is easily swayed by his cronies, and it makes him ineffective. We provide aid to Panama; why not just make that aid contingent on free access to the canal for the US military? That seems simple and maybe even effective. What doesn’t seem effective is slurring bizarre threats out of nowhere. I’m also pretty sure it’s not the military asking him for this; it’s private businesses who think Trump will do something for them, so they can keep the fees in their pockets. Even if he’s able to do something that results in reducing or eliminating costs to US-registered ships, you and I will not benefit from it. The government will just keep playing these games that divert our tax dollars into the hands of billionaires. Are you okay with that?

Years later Carter gave the Canal to Panama after almost a year of the United Nations and News media condemning the US for the inequalities between how the US military lived vs the Panamanians just across the fence.
