Yes Russia is a larger economy than the UK in terms of purchasing power parity, however it is a country of more than twice the population of the UK. If you look up PPP per capita and you will see that the average Brit is much wealthier than the average Russian. You can pick and choose whichever economic metric you like to support any argument. Take economic growth, yes Russia has had higher economic growth than the UK over the last few years, however that is due to pumping huge amounts of money in to their military. That will inflate the GDP figure but won’t be felt by the Russian public as the wealth generated by the production of weaponry is then destroyed on the battlefield, rather than in an area of the economy that would facilitate future prosperity, such as infrastructure. The argument that the Russian economy has fared better than the UK is only true if you isolate a select few favourable economic metrics… maybe the Russian media should educate the Russian public about that, oh wait they have restricted the media for some reason 🤔

In theory, you are right, but unfortunately in practice Ukraine has long loathed everything russian and/or soviet. Since the repeated failure of NATO to uphold Bushes promise to stop NATO expansion, Russia finally found a position where it could do something about being more surrounded. One of the most important things about Putin is that he held the country through the 90s and then managed to put it back onto the world arena. The country could be run way better, but i think that in a competing oligarchy what it is today is already good enough. @Dirtmiy4 күн бұрын
The hostilities are a forced measure. Russia was ready to sign a new treaty and end hostilities after two months of war. But the West decided to continue the war. A little clarification: Ukraine did not exist 100 years ago, it is a modern formation. All information about the alleged 300 years of the Ukrainian state is written only in modern Ukrainian textbooks. Their goal is propaganda, separation of ukraine and inciting conflict with russia. There is not a single Ukrainian coin, there is not a single Ukrainian document with a set of laws. The name of the country is derived from the word “okraina” - it means border territory. People from the center of Russia moved there to protect and develop the territories conquered by Russia. Traditionally, this part of Russia was more free and wild. The first mention of the state formation of Ukraine dates back to the 1920s, after the collapse of the Russian Empire and the beginning of the ferment of minds and attempts at secession under the influence of neighboring states, particularly Poland. Here is a brief historical background. All the evidence can be found in real historical documents. There is also such an odious work as the history textbook of Hrushevsky, but this is nothing more than a personal view, which is not supported or confirmed by other historians.

All fine and dandy until the war ends and Russia has to stop its war time economy. In addition, absolute zero investment from other countries and their cash reserve is completely depleted. This economy is going to be worse than what they experienced in the 1990s. It's a disaster that is unavoidable at this point. Also, China can't save them.

People are forcibly taken into the army, travel out of the country is closed, it is forbidden to speak national languages and other restrictions. @@chargedx5768 LOL that's a logical fallacy (strawman). If the BBC fails elsewhere (and I acknowledged in my post it has critics) it does not reduce the bravery of this exchange. Here are some of the logical fallacies so you can consider them before posting in the future. Thank you. Ad hominem This fallacy involves attacking the arguer's character or situation instead of their argument. For example, "Thompson's proposal for the wetlands may safely be rejected because last year she was arrested for hunting without a license". Hasty generalization This fallacy involves making a definitive claim based on insufficient evidence. Strawman argument This fallacy involves creating a misrepresented version of an opposing argument and then refuting it. Bandwagon fallacy This fallacy involves claiming something is true because many people think it is true. Appeal to ignorance This fallacy involves arguing that something is wrong because it has never been done before. Appeal to authority This fallacy involves claiming that a source is an authority on a subject when it is not. Red herring This fallacy involves introducing irrelevant information to distract the audience from valid evidence. Slippery slope fallacy This fallacy involves claiming that a series of events will lead to a major event, usually a bad event. Equivocation This fallacy involves using a key term or phrase in an ambiguous way. For example, "I have the right to watch The Real World. Therefore it's right for me to watch the show".

For those unfamiliar with Russia, while dissent is most certainly not tolerated, the Kremlin will occasionally allow someone to ask Putin questions that he normally wouldn't allow, simply so that they can claim that they allow dissent when criticized, and point to that example as proof. It's the same with opposition political parties. They are not allowed, but they will allow one or two to exist, simply so that they can claim to allow opposition parties, if criticized.
