Thanks for another excellent video. I’m curious to play around with nested tags. Using them for projects seems like a good use case
@BryanJenks4 жыл бұрын
they're interesting for sure. The only minor change they've made to my system is adding tags for lit note styles and using the child level for a status indicator for lit note processing... does make a lot of new tag nodes in my vault but I'm not too irritated by that. i need to just make an updated workflow video 🙃️

Neat to see how Obsidian does this. Roam has queries, but they work a bit differently - they're not written using code blocks (although we do use code blocks for css/js in Roam), but rather {{query: }}, you can do quite complex stuff like booleans etc, although I'm looking forward to it being even more powerful.
@BryanJenks4 жыл бұрын
there are definitely several things that Roam has more firepower in, for many, the privacy and plaintext file nature of Obsidian outweighs them. The searches in obsidian have booleans, regex, special operators like "Block:" or "Content:" etc so there's some decent power there

Hi Bryan, thanks for this video and your other resources! Question: in the left panel you have folder / search / star / tag. In my Obsidian (CSS theme?) I do not have the tag function. Could not find it in my settings, but I would love to have that (especially now with the nested tag function)

tags are something you have to activate in the settings of obsidian, Settings > core plugins > tag pane :)

Oh, how much I wished I lived outside of Iran so I could buy the access to the insider releases. Ever since version 0.10.2 I've been refreshing forum page and checked on updates for at least two times per day. These features are magnificent for automating some of the processes needed to maintain a huge vault of notes. Especially it would help with a bit of automated MOC handling! My god I love how this software is developed! It's like my best dreams has been reviewed by some genius developers and implemented in the best way possible!

I have way more tag usage than your refined way. So when I tag with dates I have found using nested works better. So I do #2021-04/22 which folds all my April tags in to one. Also helps that I can then see when I put dates in text for a reference I can search for them as 2021-04-22 as I’ve written them normally.
@BryanJenks3 жыл бұрын
yeah nested date tags would be incredibly useful. Reminds me of Dendron's dot syntax for date notes: Journal.2021.04.25.md

not quite sure what you mean, but in search results to show more context there's a button in the search pane to expand and show more context of the search results

Am I right that tags in YAML won't autocomplete? How do you ensure in YAML that you're reproducing the right parent-child^n tag hierarchy?
@BryanJenks4 жыл бұрын
correct, they dont auto-complete, best way i've found of not making a mistake is having few tags and using them the way i do. plus i also rely on templates a lot. you can also see if any errors pop up in the tag pane too!
@jafally4 жыл бұрын
@@BryanJenks Could you use the # then remove them with a "seach and replace on selection" ?
@BryanJenks4 жыл бұрын
@@jafally i mean yes you could do that, but why would you want to? that would make the tags no longer work as tags and only be plain text using # in YAML doesn't show a dropdown menu to select your tags to autocomplete and even if it did, the YAML section doent use the # unless the "#tag" is wrapped in double quotes, but even then there's still no autocomplete. 🤷🏻♂️️
@jafally4 жыл бұрын
@@BryanJenks To be more explicit, while in edit mode, I would populate the tags in the Yaml front matter using the # so I could have access to auto-complete, then use a search and relace macro on the tags. I think that would save some typing especially when using tag hierarchy and prevent errors as well.

Bryan, thank for very informative video! Curious how you integrate new Obsidian features and keep your system consistent across all notes at same time? How much time does it take? Thank once again.
@BryanJenks4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Short answer is "I do my best, and im not always consistent" long answer is that new features are awesome but that doesnt mean i always adopt them or drastically change my system to use them. in other ways like nested tags i tend to also use command line utlities for text processing to make it easier to do bulk operators to my documents. Another approach is to just actively curate and update things as you encounter them, or if it is something very obnoxious and obviously in need of change then its just a matter of "squeaky wheel gets the grease"
