Not sure if you guys know this, but you can buy a house on a sailboat access canal in Cape Coral for $300,000, sometimes less. When you go through the miserable mile heading East, you can turn left at marker 101 and Cape Coral is just past Shell Island. Cayo Costa is only a short day sail away. With 80 feet of seawall, you could rent the house out and keep your boat there in the off season.

Anchor alarm advice: 1. Anchor is reliable. If you are in cell range it displays the satellite photo of your anchorage which can be useful. I never used the feature where it messages your other phone that you are dragging. I just assumed it would cause me to sprint back from a hike only to see a false alarm or my boat already on the rocks. 2. Anchor Alarm is another one I used and has the advantage of being able to draw a custom safe space. This was great in Fatu Hiva where the anchorage was narrow but 90 feet deep. So a wind shift would suck.

What a great episode! The sail looks great and it looks like it's going to be the right size for sailing upwind and in Bahamas. Stay safe guys!
@roadie31244 жыл бұрын
About jibs and other headsails. This mainly applies to upwind and reaching in moderate winds. Some qualifications. Cruising monohulls don't gain any advantage by tacking downwind because of hull speed. When you're sailing in a gale, you're trying to de-power. Big is not better unless you're sailing downwind, including a broad reach, in light to moderate winds. Remember that sails are most efficient when they're working like aircraft wings. You need laminar flow across the sails for maximum efficiency. Jibs sort-of works like leading-edge slats on an aircraft wing. They promote laminar flow over the upper edge of the wing. That reduces the stall speed in an aircraft. In boats, it increases the lift from the main. You don't need a jib that covers the main. You just have to get the laminar flow working. One problem with jibs is that you need a higher angle of attack for them to work. Which means that you can't point as high. But then we get into discussions about over-rotating, aerofoil section masts and sailing faster than the wind speed and 10° apparent wind. 😁 That's a long way of saying that your smaller jib is more efficient that the big one. But you probably knew that anyway 😁

Mrs SB uses those big reusable shopping bags in our chest freezer to manage her swag. She uses about half a dozen and keeps an updated list of stock pinned with a magnet on the side of the freezer. Each bag has a number easily readable on the handle or side, they don't stick together or to the freezer walls and you don't have to empty the whole thing to get to something on the bottom! Lovely video as usual, many thanks!

Lookin good! Here's a tip from an old salt. Don't refrigerate all your cold drinks just place them in the frig a day or two before you plan to drink them. I stored mine in packing in plastic watertight containers in the bilge! Fair winds and following seas!
@SailingSoulianis4 жыл бұрын
We had plenty more drinks didn't fit in the fridge, actually! Though to fill the fridge, we needed to put some drinks in there. The thing is so dang huge, if we actually filled it with only perishables we wouldn't have enough time to eat it all before it went bad.

Hey guys @ 4:18 hanging off the forestay foil is a funny (lonely) looking sail feeder. the concept is to run the luff bead of the headsail through this feeder then the bead through to the foil proper - length of your pennant to hold that is probs a bit long - It will reduce the likelihood of tearing the luff bead (6mm) out of the sail. Keep sailing have fun - love the work precision sails do )the feeder looks like a claw shaped thing hanging off the foil
@SailingSoulianis4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Ian, our prefeeder was quite ragged and we were concerned it would tear the new sail, so we fed it by hand....
@yachticus4 жыл бұрын
@@SailingSoulianis two sides to this - you are not likely to be pulling this up and down too many times - so it could be a mute argument - but if you have to dump your 150 and run this up the foil it is handy to enable both people to remain back from the foil. there is also another work around to try and secure a solution to fill the wind speed and angles - which sail do we use question. Some that we used to do years ago - have the 150% with a reef point in the sail in a similar fashion you would have with a mainsail. soft eyes at both the luff and leach to get this to work properly. A retro fit from a sailmaker. For mine it lets you change gears without changing sails. a word of support - for you new sail - its really quite critical that you get the block position accurately set. even if you nees to use barber haulers.. Ask the guys at Precision sails how to do this. Love you efforts and your good humour. take care and be kind to those closest Cheers

To cure the headsail luffing at the top leach, the car needs to be moved forward. With a 110 headsail, you may need to add additional jib tracks forward which will help with the leach angle. Great channel and I am enjoying watching your journey!
@SailingSoulianis4 жыл бұрын
Yup, our car was nearly all the way forward. We had one more to move. I was initially concerned about this, but over the course of that sail, and a few other's tweaking the rigging here and there, we were able to sort things out and have everything dialed in now. The main issue was a poorly tensioned forestay.

Watched you hoist the new jib and noticed you didn't use the pre-feeder (Red triangle by the furling drum). Next time you hoist a sail, feed it through the pre-feeder feeder first, it helps to avoid jamming the bolt rope in the foil track. Happy sailing!

Lots of fun to watch you deal with all the same issues I have over my 28 years of owning my Tartan 37 and sailing from SF to Maine. You are going to like the 110. I sailed that distance with a 110 and it worked fine. Don't let anyone tell you that you need more. Yes, occasionally you may want a bit more, but most of the time you want just that. I had a gennaker that I used a few times in really light winds. I now sail mostly in Maine and Nova Scotia and have moved up to a 125% and that works well. I am not too happy with the foam luff--I just do not see how it really improves the shitty shape of a reefed jib much. That is why you want a smaller jib--so you can have decent shape in higher winds rather than having to reef and having something that does not work. Suggestion. Seems like you got the tuning straightened out in the end of this video, but you were right--you lacked backstay at the beginning. You want about 4"-6" of play at rest with the forestay at anchor. I tiny adjustment will make a BIG difference in pointing and speed. On food when cruising: Another suggestion: I see that you are provisioning like you are still back in your apartment and living it up. Maybe it is just a personal thing, but I like great food, too. But I learned to pare down my desires when cruising because you can end up being a slave to your refrigerator and gorging yourself on wonderful stuff that is going to go rotten tomorrow---this takes away from the enjoyment of cruising IMHO. Simplicity of food and focusing on a few things you enjoy that keep will make your life simpler and allow you to enjoy your toys, the environment, and some of the folks you meet. You will understand why many cruisers become, unfortunately, alcoholics (or maybe they were and this is there way of "escaping"). I am sure you figured this out, but another trick is to ALWAYS run. your refrigerator wide open whenever the engine is running---saves electricity. And I hope you have enough of those Calframo fans--they are terrific. I think 4 of them is nice on a T37 in the tropics. Another thing would be a white tarp or Sunbrella cover over your main boom to keep the cabin cooler as you work into the Caribbean---it is going to be really hot. A white umbrella like cover over the forward hatch is another almost "must have" so that you can keep the forward hatch open, and air circulating, when it starts to rain---it also helps keep the sun from turning the V berth into an oven. You are doing really well. Enjoy. Ray Durkee "Velera". T37 #373
@SailingSoulianis4 жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear Ray! Thank you for the great insights! We do have a UV shade we use for a boom tent, and we repurposed the "helms awning" we had for a v-berth shade now that we finally have a bimini. We've got three fans now, but I think we need a forth near the foot well of the pilot berth to push air back from the v-berth and we'd be all set!
