I've just gone through a very similar process, insurance inspection, rig tune, set the rake etc. on my selden single spreader fractional performance rig, new wheels in the sheave blocks, added a dyneema removable solent style inner stay, replaced all my running rigging in preparation for a solo Atlantic crossing early next year from Cape Town to "whoever will let me in " I've got a G2 on a karver continuous furler on a 3' stainless sprit on a fractional halyard just above the forestay hound making it a tri~stay fractional solent rig with the karver torsion stay above and removable dyneema inner stay below the headstay hound, no runners and a single backstay

Worry is interest paid on a debt never owed. You guys are doing the right thing. And yes, steel does have a serviceable life. I have a plant that all I do is replace lots of structural steel. Richard's explanation was spot on and simple to understand. Just think, new rigging and another 40 years of not having to budget for its replacement. LOL

Now I know why rigging a sailboat is more an art than a science. As a former America's Cup sailor, riggers we always on the boat. They tried making gagues to measure tentions, but in the end sailing an constant tuning got the most out of the boat. Excellent vid. My suggestion, no rule, always pay a professional Rigger to do your boat. It's the best money you will ever spend on a sailboat. If they allow you to learn from them, even better. Thanks again, Excellent Vid.

Best decision ever to have Richard do that project. 👍. I was nervous when you guys loosened the mast base, what could go wrong 🥴. 22:04 - to a potato who just watches sailing channels 🤣, that looked like a bunch of spaghetti upstairs 🥴. But, it’s brand new spaghetti and it’s sorted and you’re sailing... 🥳. Give us a follow-up on the pumping situation 👍

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode for several reasons. The content was great. I don't think people fully appreciate how much more work it is to capture the story with footage when your better half is absent and you're doing everything yourself with the cameras, while still focusing on the real task at hand, which was the rigging. (Like putting a camera on the boom of the crane? Really?!) And the editing at the flashback at 12:35 was very well done. Well done, Kirk (and Lauren, if you edited that). You two continue to inspire us to retire sooner and get a boat. Quite literally your Sailing Soulianis channel has gradually influenced us to change our retirement plans.
@artsmith1033 жыл бұрын
Look into some of the crew websites to see if you can start getting experience. Another option is yacht clubs typically welcome visitors on low key race night, typically Wednesday. You might have to split up if the boats aren't too big. Bring a box of wine, spiced rum, or Heineken to say thank you.
@SailingSoulianis3 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thank you for the compliments! It’s rare to get a comment where someone so easily recognizes the efforts made behind the camera. So cool to hear of your retirement plans and how we have influenced them. Thank you so much for sharing!

Nothing Like getting the best. I have been doing business with Mack since the seventies. Have purchased many sails furlerers, and Mack Packs from them. Good people. My Tartan 37 never had a pumping issue so must have been set up Right. I have re-rigged a couple of boats myself. A 44’ cutter and a 46’ ketch. Giving them the measurements and exchanging the rig myself. I had them do one complete (easiest) and another they did top swages and I did staylocs on the bottom. (More work). But Stalocs will out last swages and can be worked on in the field. But we were going accross oceans and to very remote places with that boat. You went to the right people, and given your situation I would have done it the same way.

..... laughing .... OK so Richard is true to the sense of the word, a craftsman, that I get. But when he coiled up that new cable in his shop I wanted to smack him, he did it so easily and seamlessly, I was like bloody hell how is that possible, he is just showing off .... what is the blend of his accent, so cool and smooth .... have to say was a wee bit startled when the bottom the mast was held in place by four slot screws. Get the fact when the weight if the mast is on the base it is not moving, but still! .... why are all bosuns chair hoists not like that, makes total sense .. instead of the cleat, would a cam lock work like ones one uses for the main sheet and traveler .... too bad Lauren had to go north, think this would have been a day that she would have really enjoyed, all the goings on and seeing and hearing the how's and why's .... great to have Richards confirmation as to how Soulianis handles .... thx for sharing .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

Enjoyed the video; it seems like there is always more to learn. Love the way you guys do stuff right. Richard is obviously really capable! On our old (1983) Pacific Seacraft I replaced the standing rigging before our passage to Ireland in 2016. Then, after having a stainless steel rigging plate break from crevice corrosion(before our trip), I replaced the chain plates. I figured that they were pretty old, too. If your chain plates are original, it might be worth asking Richard how long he thinks they’re trustworthy.

you said several times that you're replacing the 'rig', but you're actually just replacing the standing rigging, right? Rust leaking out for the swages is a dead giveaway that it's time to replace ss wire. Look closely at your lifelines too for the same symptom - especially if you have vinyl-covered life lines. You'll feel SO MUCH better after getting all new standing rigging. I did mine last year: climbed my mast and sequentially retrieved and sent a pair of wires to a rigger for duplication with new (incl new turnbuckles), installed the new pair, took another pair down, etc. It took me about 2 months all told, but I avoided the large cost of having the mast pulled out. Good Luck!
