Don't let anyone tell you that you have to paint your rusty old truck! Coat that baby with some Poppy's Patina & go break some necks! We have the links for the products we sprayed below and you can use the code 454S2S to get a discount at checkout!
Glossed Out:
poppyspatina.com/collections/...
Black Truck Bed Liner:
poppyspatina.com/collections/...
.
If you struggled to find the right lighting and switches for your OBS like we did, then search no more! Make sure to check out RzLightz.com
.
Huge shout out to Cassio (@cb_autodetail) from Boca Ceramic Coating (@bocaceramiccoating) for coming through last minute to shine up the 454! Make sure to check them out if you're in the South Florida area and need your ride to be perfectly polished!
.
.
It's the moment we've all been waiting for! We're finally throwing the big block OBS Chevy 454ss back on the dyno! You saw us install all of our RPM Power Package parts that we got from JEGs. You watched us get our QA1 suspension installed and our Sniper EFI system set up. The only thing left to do is rip it now... right?
Well, we thought so too! But unfortunately, this truck had some other plans. On our first test drive of our newly cammed 454 shop truck we absolutely smoked the rear diff. It may have had something to do with that fact that someone forgot to put any fluid in it (we're not going to name any names). But instead of making mountains out of molehills, we decided to use this as an opportunity to upgrade our rear end to a beefier Eaton True Track set up. So while we waited for our new differential to come, it was the perfect opportunity to work on some cosmetic details of this truck.
We brought Brian from Poppy's Patina all the way out from Oklahoma to help us spray some bed liner down in the back of this truck. And while we had it all disassembled, he suggested to throw a thick coat of some Poppy's urethane clear coating to help preserve the rustic spirit of this truck for years to come. We even went the extra step and had Cassio from Boca Cermaic Coating come out and polish the truck to really make her shine!
By the time the buffing and shining was being wrapped up Andrew had our rear end all reassembled and we could head to Blow By Racing and hit the dyno! We made some awesome numbers with this little slug of an OBS shop truck, and we were so excited that we... well... you'll see!

I was 16, brand new drivers license, and I worked at the local Chevrolet dealership. I took the brand new 454SS out of the showroom, and the boss’s 15 yr old son down to Sonic for lunch. We got chewed out, but not fired. Always loved this truck!

Not with these guys, they still think rust and damage is art. They change everything under the skin 100% non original but talk about original paint being part of the value and 90% of their builds rollout looking like junkyard trash. I really hate the patina look except when used to preserve actual artwork and not just random rust. But each his own I guess and their interior, engine and fab work is awesome.

@@scottjackson1636 I’m not big on the rust look either. They do really awesome work. I’ve grown up rebuilding cars and doing restorations I’m my grandfathers shop so I’ve seen and done so much as well as custom work so I know what it takes to do what they do. I give them mad props for that and my favorite build is the Orange Twin Turbo SS Chevelle. I would have built that 454 out completely, bore, stroke big cam and so on. I’d have thrown a pro charger on it as well. I love turbos but I’d want to keep that 454 exhaust note. Full paint job and would have found a really cool way to add the original graphics back on with paint but with a slight modern touch. I’d also look at adding a nice body and ground effects kit to give it that gmc cyclone look.

I gotta hand it too you guys for putting in the work and showing your failures as well as your successes. The paint finish isn’t what I would have chosen for the truck but like you said in previous replies; it’s all about diversity in the build community. You are right that it would be pretty boring if everyone did everything the same. Looking forward to seeing you finish sorting the truck and upgrading what’s required to keep it on the road under the current power levels.

390 rwhp only equals about 460 hp at the crank. I have worked in a engine building shop for years and in 2015 I built one of these trucks to 600 hp. Edelbrock advertises 550 hp with this combo but you're not getting there with an 8.5:1 cast bottom end. I had to get my 496 up to 10.5:1 with a forged rotating assembly to get above 550 hp.

With a fresh build and extra H.P., Shit happens! The driveshaft got damaged / twisted when the diff. seized up probably.

Also have to remember drivetrain loss. 500hp crank with 20% loss is 400 wheel.
