Hey Swaddle,Great video! I'm glad you are covering stereotypes of women characteristics in cinema. That's amazing! One point though, I would argue that Geet from Jab we met may seem like a Manic Pixie dream girl but in the second half of the movie the audience and Aditya had to face that Geet cannot put up the dreamy bubbly act when her life goes down. And we can see a character shift in both Geet and Aditya. Aditya had to literally shift to the "Manic Pixie dream boy" in order to improve Geet's life. The male lead had already established "success" and it was about furthering Geet's path. I think that's where the movie stands out. Both the male lead and female lead were given enough characteristics to back up each other when they were in a problem.But your other examples were on point!👍

100% agree. It was Aditya trying to fix Geet's life. Have they even SEEN Jab we Met! You saw Geet forgetting to smile when Anshuman left him. Yet, she HAD on her OWN fixed her life as a teacher. She was alive. She did not go back to the parents. She did not contact Aditya. Aditya was shown in scenes without Geet. And, Geet was shown without Aditya. The whole film was ABOUT GEET'S DREAM of marrying Anshuman. Aditya did not even have any dream. He literally wanted to die. Geet's obsession with getting married was the central focus of the whole film. *Ambition is ambition. It does NOT have to be always about career.* Geet was motivated, passionate, determined to get married to her love. She eloping for her man was the main task, where Aditya was merely helping. He did not matter. He just got brushed off by that confidence and fixed his life after, instead of being a DevDas. The movie was NEVER about Aditya Kashyap. He was a man going to suicide, lost, after a break up, who went on an entire journey trying to fulfill Geet's ambitions.

A movie that is not given enough credit for breaking the stereotype is Madhuri Dixit's 'Prem granth' In almost all movies, we see the rape survivor is a supporting character of the story and even if the main character is the one that goes through that trauma, most of the time she is assigned a ' knight in the shining armour ' to avenge for her. In this movie we see that the main character not only confronts her past after it is used against her, but she also kills her rapist. Also her love interest is not just a hero. He is prejudiced, sometimes gets his doubts but at the end of the day chooses to support her and stands by her as she confronts her past , herself

Another observation: the Manic pixie female in the Indian movie context is different from Hollywood. Indian movies either show the female character undergoing a metamorphosis as a result of marriage, life or second half where ultimately she " calms" down. Because the expectation is maturity and sorted. I can only recollect Tumhari Sulu where the female character while nowhere a Manic Pixie , was goofy and fun and at times crazy. I am sure there may be more examples out there.

I think Geet from Jab we met broke the maniac pixie girl trope before Geeli Puchi. Unlike other imtiaz Ali character she has her story her ambitious . In the first half of the movie it may seem like she is part of the trope but the second half unfoldes we see layers to characters and also consequences. Even in the first half it maybe seem like the classic pixie maniac pixie girl trope but she has more to her. She is not a mystery she is an open book.

Geet isnt a manic pixie she's genuinely bubbly and makes bad life decisions due to her naivity, Aditya sees through that and still falls for her. There's no facade of the 'perfect girl' we see in manic pixie dream girl tropes. Her character also develops alot in the second half when she realizes her mistake and we get to see a different more mature version of Geet hence her character isn't one dimensional either

Slightly off topic, the best part about Geeli puchi was that it wasn't based on the sexual relation between two female protagonists to satisfy what is coined as the " male gaze". Jab We Met's Geet is NOT a Manic Pixie Dream girl ...Not every bubbly person, adventurous, romantic person is... She was a well-etched out character and the film actually revolved around her and her growth.... This is undermining women who have this sort of outlook. Infact, Katrina as Laila in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was more a Manic Pixie Dream girl... Did she have a life beyond hanging out with this group? Deepika as a Trust Fund Party girl in the first half of Cocktail was a MPDG. And even these are arguable.

I always think of Kareena Kapoor's initial stage movies such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, or even later movies such as Jab We Met where we have the "manic pixie dream girl" to cater a guy with deep intense personality who doesn't express much but oh well, now he learns how he has to live his life and thanks to the girl who fixed him and his life because he believes _"jo bhi main ban paaya hu, tum se hi"_ (whatever I've become it is because of you) and _"mujhe jeena seekha diya"_ (taught me how to live). Contrary to this, Tamasha hits close to home and says _"darpok hai tu, apni kahaani mujhse puchta hai"_ (you're a coward! Asking your life's story from me) pushing me to discover myself more by myself. I even used to believe a girl will come into my life and will fix everything, from my emotional sensitive character's trouble with other people to my emotional vulnerabilities. I have been a "manic pixie dream boy" all my life, even now I am. But as what this video says, the parts of this trope might match with somebody's personality but not their inner personality and who they really are. At times I'm manic pixie dream boy, at times I'm cynical safe-playing person, at times I'm chronic depressive, and even at times I'm simply a saint/a monk at his peaceful state of mind. I no longer thinks "a girl would fix my life" but surely I desire one to have by my side.

Somewhere am confused. Is it like women as rehabilitation centre for broken men. If a person's life transforms because of another person then it is like because of that person other person knows how to deal things in life. A person gets to live the life at its fullest because the other person help so, that's a good think. But being extreme is too much. Is this extreme thing called "manic pixie..."?
@shabeebashams75032 жыл бұрын
The character and story of Aditi Rao is exactly how my life has been. The transition from a breath of fresh air to an emotional train wreck. I was her. And just like Priya and geeth I think when this always happy, bubbly manic pixie comes face to face with something we can't accept or a terrible fate, we fall and we fall very deep into an abyss. We completely lose ourselves from our core and doubts our existence. And at times no matter how we try we can't get back to the person we were and it kinda sucks cz we miss the optimism and the joy of life. But it also opens our eyes to such a degree where we really start seeing people through a different lens. Which also sucks cz a part of you feels your innocence have been torn away, which was the essence of all the optimism and true joy.
