Annie doesn't know it, but she's a hero of mine. Anyone that sees a deficiency, and instead of complaining about it till someone else addresses it, they step-up and fix it themselves, is a person to be admired and respected. I first encountered Bad Squiddo ages ago on twitter, and bought a fantastic Lady Pirate from her, and much later picked up her Female Soviet Sniper teams. So glad she's still going strong. Patrick! Glue the flying stand to the base, wrap it in clingfilm and the glue the model on. Undercoat and paint it, peel off the clingfilm. Its easier than maskin tape

I am just getting into miniature modelling/painting. This was an entertaining video with lots of different aspects of the hobby. Hearing about purists opposed to female soldiers and then about a bearded cow slaying at tournaments was interesting. I enjoyed hearing how Annie started up her business and researched her characters.

Both Michael and his wife Jo, are always on their social media responding to questions and commenting on painted minis. It's probably the nicest online community I have ever been part of.

I got in trouble as a kid for playing with my sister's toys... it was the great toy war of '87 when a joint task force of Transformers, He-Man, Thundercats and Action Force invaded my sister's room to over throw the evil despot Barbie. Pretty much demolished Barbie's dream house and used red felt tip pen to show where all the Barbies got shot... not even Barbie's Wedding Dress survived.

I also used to hate the creepy infinity women but that range is mostly gone or being fazed out. The new models have men and women in the same armour. The only difference is a slight height variation. Well worth looking into again!

Geoff's rant about the style of the minaitures is spot on. I have the mini he was on about and use her for a Cyberpunk game where she fits in because everything is futuristic and anime and somewhat sexy/cringey all at the same time. However, i totally get the whole thing about the aesthetic within an army, especially when they're meant to be in a somewhat serious combat force. When I trained in the early 2000's, I remember being shouted at for forgetting to do a button up during inspection after a route march during the summer, we'd been given permission to unbutton whilst marching, but went on parade as we returned...rookie mistake on my part. Iimagine the response if a female recruit turned out dressed like the mini. Sculpt the mini to the theme of your game setting and don't try to assume the sexualised model is what we want to buy (even though i did) as Geoff said. I have the Onna Bugeisha set from Annie for my Samurai (because Samurai in general, but especially Samurai Women (google Tomoe Gozen) are awesomely badass) and i mean to pick some of the other stuff up at some point. I do love her enthusiam in talking about her company and the historical research she coes for a project, great episode guys.

Great interview - really happy to have Annie and Bad Squiddo in the industry. One thing that rubs me the wrong way about some games is they seem to be ... Ok, let's go with an example - the intro page for Black Powder is the following: "Black Powder is a game for the militarily inclined gentlemen with straight backs, bristling beards and rheumy eyes that have seen a thing or two." And later states: "Secure the doors against the intrusion of womenfolk as yet unfamiliar with the conventions of war." While I do think it's meant to be parody, it's still got to be a bit off-putting for a complete outsider whose interest might have been piqued?

On women in RPGs vs Wargames, I imagine there's an issue of general popularity as well. More RPG players means more recruitment opportunities. Add that to the relatively small overhead allowing a greater variety of games being published and the only player needing to own anything for games to be played being the one running, you get a better recruitment chance for unengaged individuals, many of which are women due to aforementioned societal factors. Plus game stores and comic shops haven't had a good societal reputation until the mainstreaming of nerd culture, so you create an interesting feedback loop when talking about something already difficult to recruit for.
