Decent point regarding the generational difference, but also would have been true for certain other possible VPs. Ramaswamy is 38, for instance. I suspect this has to do with internal Republican party politics. He had to choose someone like Pence (a safe, boring, milktoast mainstreamer) last time as a legitimizing agent. He doesn't need that so much this time, so he picked someone young (for the reason you said) who didn't support him before and supports him now; which means he can talk aaaaall about that and bring onboard new voters that are now Trump-curious in places like, I dunno, New York.
