First 20 minutes, ugh that hits hard. I'll keep it vague to avoid spoilers, but damn there's a gut-wrenching performance that's on par to a very similar moment in Hereditary.

Those 20 or so minutes were absolutely my favourite of the film, not that the rest wasn't good, I loved it all but man that beginning was on another level.

Couldn't agree more, I almost wish it played out backwards, where they start off driving there to the camp, and we flashback to what happened to this character for her to always be breaking down during their stay and it builds to that opening scene and it would have hit just as hard but in a way that doesn't deteriorate from the rest of the film. For me, having such an amazing opening sequence that builds like that and then plateauing for such a long time, really effected the amount I felt the run time of this film.

I was absolutely blown away by this movie! I think it’s a Masterpiece. Seen it twice now and I’m still thinking about it. Florence Pugh is just astonishing. Cannot wait to see what Ari Aster does next. Great to hear your thoughts, as always. Thanks for the review!

Seeing you at the screening having to sit right at the front and then experience a movie like midsommar... must have been full on, but damn did this film fuck me up. The last three films i've seen were Midsommar, Once upon a time in hollywood and Parasite so my brain has been on a god damn roller coaster of masterful film making. So yeah im ready for the rest of this years films. Also gutted i missed out on Monos because it sounded amazing.

Weirdly I guessed what the first ritual was about due to the blue colour of the ceremonial gowns. It was the colour of the sky so it made sense that the participants would wear that colour to metaphorically 'become one with the sky' .

Yes! Been waiting for you to review this! My new favorite film of all time, tied with Suspiria (2018). Watching Ari's films I am so unnerved and on edge, and terrified in a way I really don't ever experience except watching his films. I wanted to leave numerous times, I felt like I NEEDED to leave from how I was so uncomfortable I felt untethered in a way but also felt like I CAN'T (also I wouldn't haha) leave and like you said there are images imprinted on my brain that I'll never forgot. They haunted me for weeks after. And that doesn't even BEGIN to touch the brilliance of the story and details itself. That's just a sliver of how it made me FEEL! SO GOOD! I'm glad you loved it :D

Great review Bailey, I’m so glad you got to watch this! Midsommar had some fantastic shots and transition !(example: the toilet into the airplane toilet) I felt enthralled throughout this whole film and further in I got so anxious I was honestly sweating. That is some impressive cinema right there. Hearing the uncomfortable nature of the audience around me made me realize how brilliant this film is. Ari Aster is top of the line in horror right now, no doubt!

Nice review, Bailey! Although I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Hereditary, I still really liked this movie. The cinematography and attention to detail are fantastic and I love how layered the themes are. It's a bit self-indulgent at points, but I can't wait to see what Ari Aster does next!

I have been waiting for this review as well, yay. I got my friend Trent into Ari Aster with Hereditary and he and I went to see Midsommar together and have planned to watch every single one of his movies in the theater; they are just on a whole other level!! I took my dad to see Hereditary haha luckily I didn't take him to Midsommar though with that ending stuff hahaha Also I have a suggestion and that is to review HBO's Euphoria with Zendaya

I have just seen it and this was some of the weirdest shit i have ever seen, not because some of the gore elements are shown at full daylight. But because we can see this film as some kind of exploration of how we see other cultures. Will we follow a cultural relativism, as some of the guys here do , despite how horrofying and brual the cults seem or do we follow an universalism by evaluating other cultures. For me the horror und the constantly unsettling atmosphere came through the knowledge, that all this shit hast happend already in the past. And with this knowledge in my head, I often forebode what might come next. The Film smartly avoids a colonial view on all this by locating this story in Sweden (and not in Papua New Guinea for example). VERY special movie!!!!!

Have you seen Knife + Heart? If you haven't check it out and maybe review it. Midsommar does not have the same horror jolt as Heriditary but there are some shocking moments, it's also funny at times. The film reminded me of a Todd Solondz flick. Will Poulter's character seems like a douche but as soon as he gets high he, to me, seemed like a sympathetic character. The real asshole was Jack Reynor who plays the callus boyfriend.

According to Ari Aster, he's not going to make a (subgenre) horror film for awhile, but I'm still looking forward to what he's making next.😊

Loved this film, but I really wish reviewers would delve more into its complexities beyond “horror in pretty broad daylight is disturbing” when I Spit On Your Grave and countless others are right there lol

I love strange movies, I love weird shit and all that, I'm a cinephile, I really liked the movie but I don't think it was that great, the white people were just empty, they were like objects and it became boring from the second they arrive at the place, the ending I wasn't blown away, but there were incredible sequences, I think Ari Aster is a promising filmmaker but he have yet to make a really great film, just need a better screenplay maybe

In my life I have seen many , many stupid movies like Serbian Movie that tried to be presented as Art ...and this is one of them. Guys , don't waste more than 2 hours of your life like I did . Besides, did you notice that only males are sacrificed at the end ...
