Father Casey if Franciscans hadn’t adapted to society we wouldn’t be listening to you right now. I think that would be a loss. I struggle with my faith sometimes. Hello there! There is still a Franciscan community, founded in Italy, called Frati Minori Rinnovati They have a few communities spread around the world, such as in Africa and Colombia. Some of them still walk barefoot and, all of them do not receive money. You can take food to them, and additionally, all food is shared with the poor, sometimes not even too much left for them. Some of his founders, who are still alive, met Padre Pio when they joined their vocation. They depend on people generosity when it comes to medical assistance or other necessities. They are called "rinnovati" which means renewed, bringing back alive the origins of the Franciscan community.

Jesus, most certainly. God in the flesh. Redeemer of all nations. King of Kings. Lord of Lords. Name above all names. But Mary? While she was blessed by God, perhaps more than any other woman in history, she is still right now what our Lord is not. Dead. Leave the woman who’s been dead for nearly 2000 years alone and pray in the name of our risen Lord! The Dominicans, who started around the same time as the Franciscans, were much the same way. St. Dominic wanted the Dominicans to travel and preach the gospel and live much as the apostles, surviving off the generosity of others. But it was quickly realized that wasn’t going to work for many reasons. It’s much like you said the Dominicans and the Franciscans are not their founders. Many of their followers could only hope to try and live up to a fraction of their founders. I think many of these changes have helped both to thrive grow and bring their ministries to many more places than they might have otherwise.

I went to Italy in 2006. When I went to the church his relics and remains are kept in Assisi, his cloaks were so simple, humble, and poor looking. I eventually went down to the what is the basement, and his remains are kept in a casket inside of a stone box that sits in the middle of a small pillar in the middle of a small room, with a single knealer in front of it. Nothing flashy. Nothing that draws attention to it. Nothing that glorifies him as a man, but honors the way he lived; humble, simple, and poor because to him the Lord came first and so did others. I ended up getting back to my hotel and broke down crying. Originally thinking I was homesick, but I think it was just how powerful seeing his resting place was, just perfect and simple. I remember kneeling there and saying a prayer to thank God I had the opportunity to be there, and to thank his son Francis for being a great saint to be a model for others. I was the only Catholic on the trip, and I would love to go back there and stay.

Even St. John Bosco told St. Dominic Savio not to imitate the severe penances practiced by the Saints of the past. Not everything that the Saints and their followers did in the past must be imitated exactly by Catholics in the 21st century. The Church does allow for changes in times and circumstances, and adapts to new technology as well. All these factors will have some effect on the daily lives of Catholics.

@@matthewjoseph9897 What he listed: traditions: language, posture, gesture, order of prayers, length of prayers, translations Tradition: epiclesis; anemnesis; the eucharistic prayer including take, bless, break, share; the Eucharist as a meal and sacrifice; active participation of the laity, role of the presider as the one who offers sacrifice. To be honest, I don't entirely agree with relegating things like posture, translations, etc., to a "little t" category, because that would imply that they are relatively meaningless, which would be gravely mistaken. A translation is either accurate and faithful to the original meaning or it is not. Having a translation of the liturgy that is accurate and faithful to the original Latin text is hardly a matter of small importance, and certainly not a "little t" tradition that may or may not be included in the liturgy.

It's logical to adapt to the times as long as the purpose of the order remains strong spiritually. Too much materialism isn't good for the Christian life (whether religious order or secular). The censure and finally the excommunication of the Fraticelli in 1296 probably ought to figure into the discussion. There was a broad continuum among the Franciscans at the time, from standard OFM to the loudest of the Spirituals bent on declaring the institutional church scandalous and hypocritical. It seems to me the Fraticelli were singled out due to the threat they posed to the *political* power of the church. The greater effect, whether intended or not, was to force "middle of the road" Franciscans to adopt more acceptable (comfortable) lifestyles. The voice of the poor was removed forever, and the legacy of St. Francis became a hollow symbol. Suppression of alternative voices continues to this day. Study the actions of my friend, Fr. Jerry Zawada, OFM, may he rest in peace. In what way did any of his activities truly offend the core principles of Christianity? In what way did anything he did violate the expectations of our Holy Father Francis? How did his actions significantly go beyond those of fellow activists, such as Fr. Daniel Berrigan? I find in Jerry's life no offensive acts, and yet he was persecuted by his own province and eventually forbidden to publicly celebrate the Mass. Tow the line, watch your step...donning the brown habit means adhering to the narrow path set out by the institutional church, in many cases suppressing the possibilities of Pure and Perfect Joy. PM

The Franciscan Richard Rohr "Cosmic Christ" popularizes a second theology of "a-one-ment" versus "atonement". Richard Rohr is currently the most popular Franciscan author. Why did a Jesuit priest take the name "Francis"?

what is the name of the saint he says wanted reform? I can't catch it. St barnavich or something like it.

St Bonaventure is considered the "second founder" of the Franciscan Order.

Is this not the state of our church? Absolutely! Every age is an age of renewal. YES!! Those who want to worship as the early church did, probably need to to go to a Coptic service. Apparently they haven’t changed their liturgy since St Mark preached to them in Alexandria.

I am happy for this video. But I was wondering can we as a way of commemoration live few days like the founder?. Begging for food, do some menial work to live out side the comfort of the walls of friary. Preach by our way of living, to visit the place where the poors live, and live few days with them. have morning and evening prayers done there as a sign of witness

the holy spirit is hard to understand; i almost think holy ghost is a better term since it seems to be the unseen force of god. let's compare st francis to buddha. they both cast off society to live in the woods without any comforts and become holy. after so much meditation, buddha realized that this ascetic lifestyle was not the right path, but that the middle path was it. nothing extreme. so it comes as no surprise that modern franciscans are more moderate.

I enjoy walking barefoot, and bit by bit my feet are getting tougher. It teaches me to be gentle and careful, and connects me to the earth. You should definitely try going barefoot... It will suprise you!

Would love to hear your views on where things are right and where they have gone astray. Fantastic exposition on the issues surrounding traditional vs. hearing from God.

Did St Francis have the stigmata?.
@mikefranks76243 жыл бұрын
They thought St Francis was an Alter Christus because he was the first person to receive the stigmata (the wounds of christs passion). The believed at the time that because he bore the wounds he must either be him or an alternate presence from God
