I served in Kuwait. The Marines, Sailors and soldiers had a Navy Priest. They held Mass everyday in the main compound tent. They had a Protestant chaplain but not he was in a cushy area in Bahrain. The Catholic chaplain was always in the thick of it with his men and women. The Catholic Priest would interact with us by making sure we had an enough water. A year later I signed up for RCIA. Part of my family was Catholic and I was raised by a second generation Irish Catholic family in daycare. The point is the priest led by example

I would like to add that while beginning new friendships with people ‘dropping’ them if they refuse to accept Jesus is anti Christian. Sometimes it might take years of devotion to save a soul. They just might want to observe your faith in action. Love. 🕊️

Father Casey, ur on point re: spiritual clothing. My MIL was a RN. She didn't change her nursing uniform, shoes & cap before she left hospital. Often, every week, she shopped for clothing, shoes, food etc before coming home. Everyone knew she was a nurse. Religious clothing should be worn, imhumbleopinion. Thank you, Father Casey ✝️ ✝️ ✝️

I grew up LDS, and converted in my late 20's when a diagnosis sparked the desire to know God. I am well now, praise be to God. For whatever else many may make of the LDS they do a few things VERY well. Family history, family time, and missionary work. I still spend my free time doing geneology as i believe its important, and any father or mother knows the importance of family and love, but missionairy work feels so absent in our faith. An LDS missionairy is an 18 year old that is sent to MTC (missionairy training center, essentially a boot camp of lds theology + learning the essentials of the primary language where the missionairy is to go) and then they go out into the world. Their training is generally 12 weeks long before they go out for 2 years of their life to spread what they believe to be the truth. It is inspiring to me and though I elected to join the military (even as a youth I had many doubts of the LDS faith), I have taken that with me as I crossed the Tiber. These boys have hundreds, if not thousands, of doors slammed on them. Strangers yell at them, cuss at them, spit at them. But they carry on. How can we, knowing this is the true church God established, that is preserved by the Lord & the blood of countless martyrs, not follow that example?

I am glad to see someone else addressing this issue. I have long advocated that all churches need to have a monthly or weekly meeting for people who are "Christian Curious." They don't want someone to preach at them or witness to them, but they do want someone who will answer their questions. In my shop, I include religious accoutrements from other religions. I get a lot of, "Are you Jewish/Muslim/Buddist...?" I answer honestly, "No, but so much of the religious hatred in the world today is based on ignorance. I am a practicing Christian and devout, but I have studied many religions. You can ask me any question about any religion and I will answer it to the best of my ability." You'd be surprised at how many people 1) lack a basic education about their own religion, and 2) thank me for telling them about Jesus Christ and not getting "Bible-thumpy" about it.

Has it ever dawned on you that people are leaving because they don’t believe there is sufficient reason to believe the religion is true. I was questioning the teachings when I was young and the older I have gotten it makes less and less sense. faith is and has always been a weak argument for belief in god, and as decade after decade, and century after center goes by, there has not been a second coming and you couple all this together, it seems like people are realizing there is no good reason to believe. The values Jesus teaches are valuable and can lead to a more fulfilling life, but I can live by those values and not believe he is the son of god. People are coming around to just bring better people and leaving all the supernatural stuff behind.

Thank you for all your good work and the efforts to talk about faith and Jesus Christ. I am from Germany and it is kind of funny to read comments, in which they call you liberal, leftist or worse, bc our german church is very liberal and that means, many, also clerics, dont even believe in resurrection, in Jesus as Son of God or other basics. I want to say: you are totally orthodox, but trying to avoid the traps of spreading ideology instead of the gospel. Jesus has to be in the centre of everything, if we talk about our love to Him and what He means to us, instead of doctrine, what He changed in our lifes, we do the best. Of course you should also know enough about the bible and church teachings to answer questions. Be humble, be honest, talk about the beauty of God, not politics. Just a random joke: in Eastern Germany there are only few christians left. A monk told me, when he wore his habit there ( white and black), he was asked, if he was cosplaying a jedi knight. They never saw a monk before. So he could talk about God. 😂😂😂😂

I agree, but the one criticism of the RCC of the recent past, was how poorly they educated their members. I think if you can make your flock strong and educated, then they can evangelize organically. But you need a good hardcore base to do that. The RCC needs to make a foundation before it can rebuilt its house.

Vatican 2 embraced the world and pope francis fully supports it. So what's the fuss about? Until the upper hierarchy realizes there's a course correction needed nothing will change. The church's strategy is to accommodate itself to the world or voices of the faithful that 60 years ago wouldn't even be considered as they were viewed as outside of the doctrine

Another thing as far as communication I found, was the lack of knowledge of the church, but also vocations and convents and young people looking at them. I go to 2 churches, one very devout and one that is devout but not as conservative in parishioners. Not many knew about convents with younger women and every time I'd drop off brochures from Sisters of Life or Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal or Dominican orders with many young women, they were shocked. Many think they were all just closing. Sure many are, but many are fine. Women from Harvard and Yale joined 2 near me, and I think again, that unless you are looking for a vocation, you just don't know. Communication is not very good. Maybe if young women saw the orders with women like themselves, they might not think "I want to be a nun too" but they'd know women are looking at this way of life as a choice. Our young priest like Fr Casey draws in more prospective men because he is young too. I hope more of the fruits of the church are shown and not just to "the choir"

The unfulfilled promise of Vatican II was reaching out and evangelizing the culture. Sadly, the church leadership consists of senior leaders who either covered up the sins of the church or leaders who still sit quietly in deference to those who did. This is not the generation of leaders with the courage to leave their “high walls” and face the contempt of their lost sheep. Be aware Mr. Cole, as antipathy passes away you will be left with apathy.

Father, I agree and don't agree with your first 2 minutes. That is a first in itself. Here in Europe, the Anglican Church in England started the Alpha-courses. It grew into mainland Europe. Other protestant Churches joined and also the Roman-Catholic Church. Each in it own way. But the main goal is to evangelize. It is a very simple but effective concept. I am even surprised if it did not reach the US. The main problem is getting people to join. The Alpha-course is for people who go to Church every Day or on Sunday until the people who are in doubt and do not go to Church or even say they do not believe. Every different Church Catholic or Protestant make their own contents but follow a general line. Every course evening (in total 10) starts with a free meal. Then a lecture, about the Bible, Jesus or The Holy Ghost etc etc. Finaly focus groups here people talk about the lecture. It is quite a succes, also in my country, where many people lost God. I can recommend it every Diocese. My Diocese, the Diocese Haarlem-Amsterdam in The Netherlands sees young and old people alike from outside the Church being interested in the Course and getting connected with God and the Church. Although this is the goal. The course is aimed at letting the people getting to know the faith and making the choice themselves.

Padre Pio said that protestantism was from the devil and Our lady cried because Catholic Church was not fighting this enemy(protestantism).....It;s necessary to preach out loud that protestantism is from the devil(as protestants preach about Catholic Church). “Do you not know that Protestantism also [1] has a supernatural founder? You know now, it is an angel, and his name is Lucifer” “It is the Virgin who cries because we do not fight this enemy [Protestantism]”. “Protestantism is like a black cloud that quickly covers all the sunshine. You know, therefore, that a cloud is not greater than the sun, and that it does not cover it forever. The cloud passes by the sun, just as Protestantism will pass before the Church, without causing it any harm, because what does not come from Heaven can never overcome Heaven itself.[2].Look at Protestantism as a great hospital, where the Doctors are not real doctors, and medicines are not effective because they do not have the correct substance. You will see, therefore, that if a dying person enters this hospital begging for a cure, he will not even hear a solution for his illness, or he will be treated sloppily, and death will be his only end. This is Protestantism: there are pastors who are not pastors, and there are doctrines that do not save, because they are not the doctrines of Christ. And his [the Protestant's] only end is eternal death, if divine mercy does not counteract fearful justice.” Padre Pio

I know I'm late to the party, but why do you consider Catholicism to be a form of Christianity? Genuinely...do you agree with the typical docterine of the Catholic Church? The Bible says saints are believers who follow Christ. Aka Christians. Not special Christians that "earn" the title from the Catholic Church. Also should only pray as Jesus asks us to. To God. He also tells us to ask God directly for forgiveness. Prayer is almost always to be done in private, not in public. We are told not to worship or pray to idols vs praying to worshipping God directly. The Bible is against more stereotypical ideolgies of the Catholic Church more than most other Christian churches ......so how do you justify these things? I am a curious non-denom.. meaning I belong to THE church as all ofnus believers do. I study the Bible with others and believe it's the word inspired by God. We will always fall short, as the Bible says, but we must try our best to stidy and KNOW Jesus through prayer, through the Bible, and life. Why did the Catholic Church start All Saints Day and All Hallows Eve instead of acknowledging Martin Luther/Reformation Day? 🤔 Weird. Why were they they first known misrepresentation of Jesus and God? God shown as Jupiter , Jesus shown as Saturn (the previous gods of the Romans)? And then they instated Saturnalia.... Probably to help hide their terrorizing of Christians. But also in stead of Christ's birth during Sukkot. There's a lot more. I would like answers, I grew up in a Catholic church, went to Catholic school for ten years, and have asked many Catholics about this, read Catholics "answers" to these types of questions and nothinf is made apparent. Can someone please explain?

The friendliness and awesome music, free bagels, feel good preaching (on non-religious deep questions) attracted me to the Evangelical Protestant church I attended for 4 years. This “Jesus lite” had me looking for substantial teaching after a time. I found it in the Traditional Catholic Church. We have 5 packed full Masses on Sundays and 2-3 full daily Masses. We have groups and apostolates to suit every taste and temperament, including those that “go out into the world”. It’s truth, sometimes difficult to hear. It’s reverent and asks one to sacrifice and grow in faith. And the numbers of people just keep going up because true faith bears fruit. The “cool” church has shown the fruits it’s borne-the empty pews of which you speak. Truth works.

It was the same for me too, the friendliness, the love, joy, peace and hope that protestant christians radiated and the fun events they hosted, inspired me to start reading the bible, having a personal relationship with God and going to catholic mass again. This didn’t only happen to me, the bible group from my high school started with 6 people and after 2 years there were about 30 students there. Not everyone was christian of course, but a lot of people were drawn to the group. This is something we can learn from our protestant brothers and sisters:)

Speaking as a non Catholic, raised Episcopalian, now a scriptural based Christian, I've been around the roller coaster looking for the right congregation. Looking at the entire big C Church, what I continuously think to myself is, "I wish these guys would just get over themselves and let their ego and bias go." Very plainly this butting of heads between each Christian group over who is right, or most right, or spiritually based, or scripturally based, etc just hurts the people who simply want to hear the good news and follow God's word. I sometimes wish, if the heads of each denomination cant agree, then they should at least have a meeting once a year/ biannually/ once every decade, whatever to meet in fellowship of Jesus and discuss matters and principles of preaching the word and the word itself. We are becoming lost sheep for Gods sake! Help us!

Dear Fr. Casey: As an old Catholic; baptized in 1945 and started catholic school in 1950 until graduation From Regis High in 1963; I feel I've learned a few things. But the people I meet almost always believe in Jesus. And have a church that is ("much better") than my Catholic Church. They may have fallen out of my church because of some person. SO, can you do a new talk on evangelizing a person who thinks they have all the right answers? Thanks for all you do. and I will look for your past you-tubes to see if you hit this topic. God Bless. I have a suggestion for another video. I believe that many Catholics today struggle with evangelization because they don't have a clear idea of how to express what exactly the good news is. I think this is because the Protestant version of the Gospel has drowned out the original version, and because the Protestant version (versions) is often simpler and catchier. The idea that by believing you are protected, or that all you need do is believe and you are saved (faith alone) is really good news. It just isn't the correct good news. But what is? How do we phrase it? How do we phrase it so that the life of the church and the sacraments and of the personal struggle for moral behavior is the obvious conclusion of what this good news is, as opposed to the great, I can sit at home alone and read my bible conclusion that so many come to? The Protestants are great at always including their version of the gospel message in almost every speech sermon media event what have you they do. I never hear it from Catholic media, at least not in a way that is succinct and obvious. The Catholic church (as represented by books and media I have consumed) spends a lot of time talking about the Catholic church and defending it. I'm not saying that is bad, or not needed, but it often feels like it is leaving the gospel message as already assumed and understood. What is the good news and what is so good about it?

Preaching to the choir is easy to do, while evangelizing to a world that is, at best, apathetic, and at worst, hostile, is a far more difficult task. Yet, we are not called to do easy things. We are called, as Christians, to do the difficult thing. For it gives no glory to God to do that which is simple. Thank you, Father Casey, for reminding us of that. I have not done my own due diligence in speaking to people about our faith, or addressing the needs of those who have relinquished any attachment to our faith.

I sympathize with your sentiment, but I remain scandalized by the church having completely shuttered its doors during Covid. Our forefathers in faith died rather than capitulate in that manner to the secular ethos, and the entire hierarchy of our church went along with that. How can we evangelize those who don't believe when we did not have enough faith/conviction to uphold the tenets of our faith under adversity.

I'm sorry you feel that way. It was definitely not my experience. Where I was continued to celebrate mass everyday for the faithful, even if, for just two months, most of the congregation was not allowed in. But I think this missing the point. We continued to hear confessions outside; we continued to anoint the sick; we continued to provide food, clothing, and alms to the poor; we continued to provide faith formation and social gatherings, via Zoom. The Church did not cease, it simply did what we were supposed to do: care for the common good to slow the spread. I don't know what you're suggesting with "we did not have enough faith to uphold the tenants of our faith under adversity." Keeping away from germs is not a lack of faith; caring for the common good during a pandemic is not failing to uphold our teachings. I saw more faith during the pandemic and a more vigilant church than I see now. I'm sorry you felt that the Church was compromised during this time, but I've never been more proud of her.

I have three questions that Father Casey may have already addressed in other videos. If he has, forgive me. I am not aware of them. My questions are as follows: 1. Why are people leaving the Catholic Church in droves? 2. Are there other religious institutions, whether Christian or another faith, that have had much better retention rates? 3. If the answer is yes to question #2, what are these institutions doing differently that leads to fewer people departing from them?
@russellmiles2861

In the past there was much social cohesion; eg, family alienation, jobs expectation and expectation of those in public office. We have a more understanding and respectful culture. The flip side is folk don't see religious adherence a requirement for social life. The upside is those who participate in religious life are more genuine in their ideals. And the Roman Catholic church has better retention than most. Eg, in the USA the fastest declining church is Evangelicals - probably because they became so politically partisan. The Catholic church avoids such.

Well a priest at our parish who is increasing vocation inquires by his work, was told by a priest who is protestant, they pray for vocations daily. (so we do now) We had 11 inquires about vocations this past 6 months when 0 the year before. Also I feel from many who told me they left Catholicism it was varied in reasons. Many were gay or had gay family members. Many were divorced and felt annulments were too much trouble or they couldn't get them. Some felt they were more loved, more involved, more friendly in other churches. ( you can argue the reason for church but this is what I've heard a lot) I know a few coworkers who go to a church service where a pastor preaches and it's not a particular religion. I think the scandals hurt a lot and the trust and many who never said anything felt they could finally step back and go elsewhere. I think when a priest pitched a tent outside our city church, for anyone to ask questions (we were in large college town) it was a good idea. You hear then what people think, what bothers them and can address it.

I think many young adults are living on their own and peers influence a bit. Some are living with a guy and know its' a sin with the church, they don't want to stop, so why go to church? In the past, they lied or got married younger and the priest just would wipe the earlier stuff away. Some are divorced and have complicated living situations. Some feel if they can't have the Eucharist, why go? Some were married outside the church and know they are invalid.

I wish I could think of ways to invite younger adults to things the church is doing. Some things are just too "conservative" for a casual Catholic, the Xmas/Easter/Good Friday type. Adoration wont bring them in, a talk about the rosary or a book club about saints.Maybe church picnics can be at a park instead of church grounds. Are there ways to advertise other than a bulletin that an outsider wouldn't see? Would a game night or an engaging speaker help? I know when I tried to bring a family member to our church picnic (in parking lot) she said to bring her a brownie, she didn't belong there and didn't want pressure from "Where have you been? types. It's just so hard, but I feel if the church could do things that would bring people to it, something fun, not too deep in religion, it would be a start.

They asked if that meant I was a Christian. What!?!?!? We were/are the ORIGINAL Christians. So many are either taught untrue and unkind things about Catholics or not at all. While I’m not trying to convert anyone immediately , I would like to educate many. I invited them all to come to a Mass and I would reciprocate by attending one of their services. I am as Catholic as they come and perhaps they are deeply dedicated to their faith as much as I am. But getting them to attend one Mass at least to understand my faith more truthfully will hopefully help to stop the lies and show them the TRUTH of being a Catholic. Which is so beautiful.

The *Big* question is - how do Roman Catholic *Christians* spread the word to other denominational Christians that CATHOLICS are *FIRST DEGREE - ORIGINAL CHRISTIANS* , when the Evangelicals (born again Christian preachers/pastors) are openly spreading the false narrative on air on TV all over the West etc.AND no strategy by the RC church to counter these false teachings that Catholics are: * NOT Christians * Do NOT read the bible (as the hierarchy with-hold biblical knowledge from the flock) * R.C. preach false Christian doctrine * R.Catholics preach 'Replacement Theology' contrary to biblical fact. *Believe it or not, Christians with all its denominations are their worst enemies* . Remember, what Jesus said Matt 22:25-29 *Every kingdom divided against itself will not stand & is brought to desolation* . Until there's no competition within the various Christian denominations to entrap *customers* using the *JESUS* brand name to undercut each other to make money as a charity family business or tithe collections, 🤔 - it's a cutthroat business *SADLY* . Every Evangelical organisation has it's own special charismatic front man woman which draws in the *CROWD* Fr. Casey, I hop from one Christian TV channel to another and one youtube video to another - listening to these preachers - some with hundreds of follows & others with less. I even view Judaism Rabbis videos and GUESS WHAT - Fr. Casey, *I'm still a baptised Roman Catholic Christian & always will be* 😆 The seed fell on fertile ground decades ago. 😉. It matters NOT whether you wear a brown friars habit or a bikini. 😉

About finding the lost sheep, I'd also like to mention that by acting the way you say we're going to show we are just normal people. That's it. People that have problems, people that have a normal life. Not some different kind of people that just spend all their day in Church. By showing that we show that the Church is made for normal people - and it by being good we show it makes people better. And this intuitive thought might convince someone when they are asked by us.

But when you spoke about having certain programs to meet people where they are and THEN bring Jesus and the church into their lives you are dead wrong. The love and faith in our Lord and his church are # 1 ALWAYS. For instance if you are offering a program on marriage the churches teaching on this sacrament should be presented along with ways that this sacrament brings grace into their lives. If you begin teaching programs firstly before showing the love of Christ and our Churches teachings you won’t stand much of a chance of converting one billion lost Protestants many of whom have actually read scripture.

Do not try to do good with the ulterior motive of drawing people in, because that will be an immediate let down to most. Frankly, I think that includes not wearing clothes that screams religion. I think it should all come after establishing enough rapport and just being a good person first, and it should stay that way even if after all that investment, there is still initial rejection. Otherwise, people will see through how shallow it is.
