Hi Father Casey. I can really relate to this. There was a ti.e in my life that I left the Church and described myself as spiritual but not religious. Then after a number of years I missed the Eucharist and returned to the Church. Now I am both - spiritual and religious.

I’m both. My religion supersedes everything though and it is the reason that I’m still alive and well. In late 2021, I was diagnosed with rare aggressive cancer and given 7 months to live. In August 2022 I was placed on palliative care. I prayed and prayed. I leaned on my fav priest and my family doc who both advised me to get a second opinion. I got a second and third opinion. Second and third opinion doctors decided to work together to help me get better. Now the cancer has been obliterated and only remains in a small area. I continue to pray every day. I do the full rosary every day too. When I wake up my morning prayer is always gratitude to God for giving me another day.

My mom used to take me and my niece to the church while we were kids and I remember LOVING how beautiful churches look! It was a bit difficult to understand what the priest was saying but I do think many of the things he said stayed in our hearts. Now as adults facing many difficult situations our faith has helped enormously and I hope I can teach my kids the same when I have them💖

This is exactly what happened in my life. I was an atheist, then started to be kinda agnostic, believing in "energy" and some new age stuff... but it was a road to h*ll. I started suffering, got depression, panic attacks, anxiety... So, I cried out to Jesus and my life started to change. My family is protestant, so I went to their church, but I still didn't feel fully christian. So, just for curiosity, I thought myself: what about catholics? And doing my own research and watching videos of ex-protestants that are catholics, I began to discover that everything protestants told me about The Church was not true! And, well, I was baptized when I was a baby in the Catholic Church (and never re-baptized). And, well, here I am, back Rome, I mean, Home. And I finally feel that the searching is over. Humanity is spiritual and embodied and we are individuals in communio, that is we are liminal creatures and not purely monads in our nature. And also that yes, things are not as they are meant to be, but nothing is without purpose on the deepest level either, or else it would not be at all.

Thank you, Father Casey, for illustrating that "spirituality" and being "religious" are not states of being that are at odds with each other. Rather, one state enables the other. It all hinges on the way "religious" is , in common parlance, often equated with mindless preoccupation with rituals and legalism within a faith. Being religious is much more than that. It is a systematic way in which to orient the mind and heart to connect to spiritual realities. It is like an algorithm that facilitates our communion with the divine, in the way that the rules of grammar allow for us to communicate more coherently.

Dear Father Casey. Bless you and your work for all of your life. When I was a kid, me and my brother (we are NEARLY one year in age) would sort-of team up, when it was the big church days. We actually were VERY strictly brought-up kids, who knew ALL about please, thank you, and when to shut up, but still, we WERE getting into mischief, every now and then. I remember one Christmas thing at Church, where my brother started singing a.. NOT-so-nice version of the hymn, that we were singing. I had NOT heard that one before, so I just sat there giggling. Mom got ANGRY and seperated us. Later on (I am now 56), I can easily understand why my mom didn't want to lose face in Church that evening!😂🤦‍♂️😖 But it HAS also helped me see hings in a broader perspective: "What do our hymns SAY?" "What is the purpose of Mass?" And of course; "Where does Christ want to TAKE us, and what do we have to DO?"

From the very start, an issue is acknowledged. Where I never knew what a preacher was talking about, which no one laid a foundation. Yet, a good conscience and doing right by others is part of it, very big part of it. But, like church, worshipping G-d, Mary, Jesus, reverencing the saints and taking in how we can improve ourselves, our relationship with each other, etc. is all part of it.

I suggest reading the compendium of the cathecism or the cathecism of St. Pius X, they are short versions of cathecism, also, if you can read larce books, go to the Cathecism of the Catholic Church, you can have it as like a "dictionaire of faith" for consulting and so on, use the RCIA to make friends, connections, and have a social life in the parish you go, there is more than the old ladies with RCIA(at least in the parish I go)

I think this actually connects to another church issue which is how poorly we teach about the church in church. I also attended mass every week as a kid and in hindsight i new NOTHING about what i means to he Catholic until I started researching it myself

Some people, hard as it may be to believe, have never experienced unconditional love. They didn’t just have dysfunction in their families, they had nothing. The structure and function of the church makes sense to those who have had the experience, but not to those who have not. To those of us who have known unconditional love in our lives, our job is to be that love, whether we recognize the results or not. I’ve been in recovery for awhile and it can be hard to keep my hands off the steering wheel and leave the driving of the spiritual experience of those around me to God. And I’ve seen amazing things. Some have found a God of their understanding that I can relate to, others not so much. But all those things you say can be found in “religion” are also found in the recovery rooms. I’ve found as much loneliness in a room full of Catholics who haven’t experienced the unconditional love of Jesus as I ever did in a bar. The structure and function of the Church is a wonderful thing, probably the best humanity has come up with so far, but it isn’t the thing itself.

There is deep spirituality to be found through adhering to and practicing rigid religious structure, but it really only works if you’re making a conscious choice to do it. If someone’s just giving you orders or making you do something out of fear, it’s not going to hit very deep. But when you use the rigid structure of religious system to consciously seek the spirituality of it, you’ll see God. Religious practice must be a choice made on our own volition. When it’s enforced by others, that’s where you usually see the problems arising, and that’s when people get turned off. That’s where people get hurt

Fr Casey, The rooms of narcotics anonymous teach us that there is a difference between religion and spirituality. But the underlying reason behind this is so that people of many different faiths can come to the rooms and get clean from drugs. In my case, it's what brought me to the Catholic Church. But I do know that we have atheists, as well as Buddhists in our program. We believe that spirituality is the message, and religion is the messenger. We promote spiritual qualities like honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. These qualities are not attached to a specific religion, or lack thereof. Do you have any additional thoughts on this matter?

I can confidently say that I would not have continued walking in the faith without the Church. The Church is an absolute necessity and available to all who are humble enough to admit they cannot live out their faith by themselves. "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." - James 1:27. Another atheist question for your next 'Answering questions from Atheists' video. Short version: Why should Catholicism be considered a message of hope rather than one of horror? Long version: As an atheist, I don't claim to know what happens after we die, or the nature of the universe we live in. I feel like the world would be better off if more people were comfortable with saying 'I don't know' when they have insufficient evidence to reach sound conclusions about such things. Catholics do claim to know these things, however, the essence of which is 'We were created by an all-powerful entity we call God to serve and praise him and are judged after we die and sent to either an eternal reward or eternal punishment, with purgatory as an intermediate state for those who are ultimately destined for salvation but need to be purified first.' In essence: 1) Life is a pass-fail test. 2) Results are final, and come due to the moment you die, whether you die at 120 or die in your crib. 3) Results last forever. Go forward a googolplex to the power of a googolplex _millenia_ from now, and people will not even be 0.00000001% closer to the end of whatever fate they've been assigned by choices made during their brief stay here on earth. 3) Per Matthew 7:13, it sounds very much like in this pass-fail test, most people fail. 4) If you fail, the results are so unpleasant you would have been better off if you had never existed in the first place. It seems to follow that, if Catholics are right, we live in a world where most people would have been better off it they had _never been born_ and only a minority will enjoy having existed when the results come due. Even for those who 'pass', many of their closest friends and loves ones likely won't, and they'll spend eternity knowing that some of the people they care about are in anguish and yet forever beyond saving. Can you understand why there are quite a number of people, myself included, who see this model of reality as nightmarish rather than hopeful, and would be horrified if they someday concluded it was true?

If presented that way, I understand. It's just that I've had the experience of a God who is love, who never ceases to forgive. I look at Christ on the cross with the good thief, I look at the prodigal son, at Lamentations 3, 22-33, at Psalm 145:9, at Psalm 100:5, Ephesians 2:4-5... And many many others. I've been taught that God is mercy and I have experienced it through my own failings.

If, for example, hell existed but was entirely chosen by the damned as is often claimed, then a forgiving God who loves all his creations should release people from hell and forgive them the moment they show genuine repentance and contrition, even after death. The judgement should _never_ be final, if God desires everyone to reconcile with him, and only those who refuse to change even in the face of the full consequences of their bad choices should continue to face punishment. I feel like the Parable of the Prodigal Son from the Gospel of Luke would seem to set this up, but then it's abandoned and some of the early church fathers, like Tertullian, not only anticipated the eternal suffering of non-believers but seemed to actively look forward to it as something they could entertain themselves with from their lofty perches in heaven.

This inclusivity can attract individuals who are uncomfortable with atheism's rejection of all supernatural elements but do not align with a particular religion. It bridges the gap. Spirituality can act as a bridge for those transitioning from religious backgrounds to more secular views or vice versa. It allows individuals to retain a sense of connection and purpose without fully committing to atheism or traditional religious frameworks. Fear can play a significant role in shaping people's choice of spirituality over more rigid frameworks like religion or atheism. Opting for spirituality instead of religion or atheism is akin to a closeted gay individual identifying as bisexual rather than openly gay, due to greater acceptance and reduced stigma. Father Casey you are echoing my sentiments. I grew up in a devoutly Catholic home. I’m spiritual But not religious. As recently as last week’s homily, the priest told a story about why women cannot be priests in the eyes of God. After church, I spoke to priest, rather young-ish late 30s/40s his explanation didn’t resonate but I didn’t say more. The church for me is a place of solace. I am not really interested in religion, because it is influenced by man. I have a direct relationship with Jesus.

Why woman can’t be priest is a simple one, “in persona Christi”. What happened in a Mass is actually splited into liturgy of word and liturgy of Eucharist. And in the liturgy of Eucharist is actually priest act as an instrument for Christ, through him with him, and in him, to perform the sacrifice of the lamb of God, to offer himself to the Heavenly Father. Furthermore, Christ call himself as bridegroom and church his bridge, in revelation 19 echo that too =) so it is better to have a male perform this sacrament than female. As for other sacrament like confession, the priest act as Christ, and no longer the priest himself. Again in persona christi. It is God’s Grace who absolve our sin. So it sounds normal we say “bless me father, for I have sinned”. If the priest is a female, saying “bless me mother for I have sinned” may be strange. Or calling a woman father may sounds weird too. And finally Jesus called 12 disciples who are a man might have a reason too. Through bible, actually Mary mother of Jesus and Mary Magdelene seems to be a more faithful disciple than the 12, they even follow Jesus through his crucifixion and go to Jesus tomb after sabbath. But Jesus did not call them as disciple surely with a reason. Actually through internet and bible we can find these info easily. Just matter of you believe it nor not. There are many great saints and disciple who come before us and preserve the church in these 2000 years, never one day they ceased to seek answer from God, surely you can have more faith on your church than you think.

You have misunderstood your church, and probably still don’t know what your beliefs are… First of all, it is greatly reveal in Gospel of John and Paul’s letters, Jesus want all of us to be one like he and Heavenly Father are one. And in holy communion he want us to be one with him, he in us and we in him. So one-ness is a mystery you should think of. I don’t think Jesus mean spiritually or symbolically one-ness. And secondly, we who eat of his body and drink of his blood, be one with him, and everyone of us the church is the Body of Christ, we are no longer ourself. If we committed adultery, it is actually we who use Christ body to sin. Why do you think in Act when Jesus reveal to St.Paul he said “Saul…Saul…why are you persecuting me?” After Paul persecuting the church? This is the second mystery you should meditate perhaps go to RCIA. And finally…this is a private revelation of mine. In Heaven all saints are one, not separate, you can’t say church is not my thing, my faith is all about private relationship with Jesus. In heaven, all saints are in communion as one, with the Holy trinity. And hell is the opposite of heaven, all the demons and souls who reject the salvation of Christ is separated, hating each other, no trust in them, no communion in them, all are loners… It is very embarrassing when you enter the heaven and finally find that you need to face the “communion of saints” mystery, and probably you are still not yet belongs to heaven…

Love your videos. What do you have to say to SBNRs that left the church because of abuse and corruption within the church and the fact that some in the church tried to cover it up instead of hold them accountable? I believe many SBNRs (such as myself) have been hurt and alienated by their church community but still desire a connection with God. Of course it isn’t fair to throw out a whole institution because of a corrupt abusive minority, but can you blame those who can no longer trust those they gave all their trust to? And how can one start to trust again without serious steps by the institution to assure accountability and a rebuilding of trust? Thank you and God Bless🙏

It never made sense to me to hold a grudge against the whole Church founded by Jesus because of what a few sinful members did in a particular place and time. I see people holding their rage to their hearts for this or that sin against them, and it just wounds them even more. You can find terrible sinners and great saints in the Church. I try to hang out with the Saints and pray for the sinners.

I used to be, but not identify as, spiritual but not religious. It was not an anchor in hard times, since without community I had to go it alone so often. This was in college when I was ex-WELS but not yet Catholic. I can still see the appeal--religion is demanding! Especially Christianity, which demands that we not live but "Christ in us". I'm still trying to find how to love life while also seeking after the divine, but I pray I'll get there.

Such a young, sympathetic and… lacking life experience priest! I’d give him a hug. But… I don’t consider myself “spiritual”, and I don’t find a reason to be “religious”. I simply know God, because God wants me to know Him. And I can’t find a single atom in His Creation where He’s not present so I to “seek” for Him. But I guess that’s because my life experience was very different from the one this sympathetic young man had. God knows…

As a revert...I concluded that...spirit w/o God is silly! God w/o meaning is sad. Jesus is the Heart of God, and Jesus w/o the Eucharist is lonely!

For a long time, I was the opposite. Religious, but not spiritual. I'd rather, as a teen, debate atheists and protestants on the internet than pray the rosary with my mom. I liked theology and stuff, but didn't have a very prayerful heart.

You mean believe in existence of God? It’s more effective if you can find a mentor friend or spiritual director in your church. Maybe you can seek help from your church RCIA members, share them your thoughts. Christ built his church so we can have a community to help each other and grow together.

When you feel God telling you to give something to or too so something for him. No matter how uncomfortable or difficult, follow God's guidance. Make sure you check that God is calling you to do something. Is the request in alignment with the Bible?

For as much as I can appreciate this point of view, I have a difficult time believing it. That's because I don't see the Catholic church, nor any church for that matter, taking it seriously. When I talk with many of my Christian friends, they are happy to talk about *their* view of the Christian faith, and then say that the only way that they can share the Lord's Supper with me is if I am catechized by their church and believe in their view of theology and submit to their authority. I'm sorry, but I don't see anywhere in Scripture where the church becomes the center of our worship. It is only God whom we worship through the person and work of His Son, Christ Jesus. All of the trappings of the church may feel good, but do they lead us to the centrality of Christ or the centrality of our own lived experience?

Hmm…there is nothing we can do for you if you don’t believe it. Yes, Catholic is very God cantered church as well as Orthodox Church. For your “lords supper” understanding, to us it is the real body and blood of Christ, it is so important to us that we can’t simply give it to a pagan. Even you have receive it without church’s aware, it has no benefit to you, but to consume your own sin. So it is better we don’t give it to you, otherwise it would be trouble to both of us. “For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying.”

I am one of those you mentioned: Spiritual but not Religious. - Grew up Catholic, went to a seminary (capuchin) for 2 years at the age of ten. Knew I was gay at the age of 12, came out at 23. Lost interest in Religion but deepened into Spirituality. Eventually I learned that I was an old soul meaning many, many lives on earth. Saw that movie mass appeal, with Željko Ivanek, Jack Lemon , which I believed you reviewed in a previous podcast. Željko Ivanek played a seminarian tutored by Jack Lemon. In his first sermon he said “Religion was created to be obsolete “ - I got what he meant immediately. Religion is like schools, they’re out there to bring us to the next level like a doctorate. Once Religion prime us up, we’re able to become “aware” and embrace Spirituality and who we Truly are: Spiritual Beings. It is a graduation from religious to spiritual. So Father Casey, you’re helping us graduate to that higher level . May GOD Almighty bless your work.
