One big aid to the people's list to assist on reef rescues would be a multi block snatch and pulley system . Simple but would amplify the pulling power of just one boat many times . Fairly cheap to implement but Very Effective , especially if you had two such systems .

I was aground in the island of Futuna, 150 miles east of Fiji, in a Tayana 37 in 2006. The whole village turned out to help get us off the rocky shore. They even ran a line over a half mile away to a tractor they parked on the tip of the entrance. We tied four 55 gallon drums to the hull at low tide. It helped, the winch worked, we got free. I had a wife and two young children aboard. The people and natives of Futuna and Wallace Islands are brethren and gave us the most uplifting experience of our lives. I was scared your boat was going to give way and start taking on water! Thank God for the ending.

Guys, thank you so much for raising money for the local community. We're sailors ourselves, located since 2.5 years in French Polynesia and we've witnessed locals in Fakarava being highly dedicated to get another boat off the reef. This happens frequently and without the local support, there would have been many boats (and homes) lost already. They are such kind and amazing people and deserve only the best. Big thumbs up and a hug for supporting them.

Yes it was the only right thing to do. Ben is actually working with the commnunity on another goal of theirs (solar+battery powered flaked ice/cold storage facility for commercial fishing), and if enough relationships and connections can be made, perhaps a Tuamoto wide, properly funded ocean rescue program could be established someday for all of the atolls. For now though, some cash to the community in rewards for their efforts just feels appropriate.

@DavidcallardАй бұрын
Three big cheers for everyone involved in this amazing rescue operation. Hopefully Kianna hasn't been too badly damaged! She looks so much better afloat again! I'm sure you will know of many ways to save a damaged vessel from sinking. I know of one that Captain Cook found useful after he ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia . It is called 'fothering' the ship and it saved Cook's brigantine from doing the glug - glug after punching a rather large hole in her hull by making a too close acquaintance with the GBR! One of Cook's sailors showed everyone what to do which was to employ one of the ship's sails in plugging the hole in the hull. This was accomplished by literally wrapping the affected section of the hull with the sail. They did so by running the sail from one side, then underneath the ship and up the other side and back to the deck of the vessel. The crew then made fast the sail by simultaneously drawing it tight from both sides of the deck with the sail now beneath them under the hull . This was sufficiently successful to allow Cook to sail the Endeavour to the coast of Queensland for repairs. It doesn't look like your boat has suffered too much damage so you shouldn't be needing any tactics such as 'fothering' in your case. Obviously you will have to slip Kianna at your earliest opportunity, so here's hoping that she doesn't need anything more than a fresh coat of antifoul!

We are liveaboards too... and this is my 2nd greatest fear... the 1st being holed at sea, going down far offshore where this no help available. You hear and read so many horror stories of grounding, especially on coral reefs and rocks... and so very few success stories. I know you don't know this but when I was boat shopping years ago, I saw Kiana on Yachtworld and quite seriously almost made the trip up see her, I was VERY interested in her... but she went "under contract" before I committed to the trip... that buyer it turned out, was you guys. So needless to say when I found your channel I was deeply hooked... and so these last 2 videos were especially heartbreaking to me,.. right up until I saw your mast "stand back UP"... the relief I persoanly felt was... absolutely indescribable. I know you don't know me, I'm just another faceless follower (not being mean, just the truth)... but no matter HOW (and with the deepest gratitude to the locals who helped you), that you were ABLE to recover Kiana is... well, you know even better than I how incredibly good that was. If we lost our "Roci" (and at 52' overall and 15 tons, we might NEVER have been pulled off that reef)... I simply do not know how I would go on. I know I would find a way of course... but it would be something akin to losing a child to me. We wish you both and Kiana a fast and full recovery and repair. You deserve it, she is a fine ship, and you deserve to sail her for many more years to come. V/R CJ&JD Blackwell SV Rocinante =/|)= currently Hampton, VA

Couldn't bare the thought of Kiana becoming one of "those" reef stranded and stripped bare by opportunists sailboats. What a testament to mankind, those who made it happen because it was in their hearts to do so. Its so challenging to find a way to totally express gratitude in situations such as this., However I suspect the combination of success and your genuine Canadian way of saying thanks has already gone a long way. Next we need to help yourselves and the community recover as much of the costs as possible. I'm so damn happy for you guys !!!!. See you next week for chapter three.

YAAAAAAAAY. So glad that you got off. Wow. Many boats in that situation did not get off. Or got so torn up trying to Amazing help, and you handled everything right on your ent. Well done

As someone who experienced a similar incident this past June, I can certainly feel your pain and also the relief you must have felt when you got off the reef. I am just south of where you started in Burlington Washington and also documented my accident on my channel. Mine happened in a bit more calm circumstances but felt just as traumatic, and watching your first video brought back some difficult memories.
