My inlaws went through something similar. Put the boat on the beach, got it pulled off, fixed the cracks, then sailed it down to Costa Rica. The boat ended up on the beach AGAIN! This time it sank. But they refused to let it go. They refloated it, spent a little over a year completely rebuilding the entire interior, then sailed it back up to the USA. Never give you your dream!

Well guys what an amazing effort you and your friends in the sailing community put in to get Kiana back to being a totally reliable yacht again and of course your home. I don't generally like using the word luck when talking about boats that have been aground but in your situation I really do feel that luck did play a major part in getting Kiana seaworthy again, when I saw the damage after lift out I totally agree with Alies comments that she was amazed you managed to get to Tahiti. Looking forward to seeing you guys back in the water and carrying on with your adventures ❤👍👍👍🇳🇿

Good patch. Happy you're sea worthy again. What I learned patching large holes on a sea kayak that had been bent in half, is that use enough layers patching doesn't half to match the original construction (in your case no foam), completely solves the problem (there is nothing actually different from the original hull) and can go fairly quickly. My 'large' holes of course are nothing compared to what you had to do. I had odd shaped holes so after cutting a stack of fiberglass patches I had to figure out how to align them. Instead I just saturated them all with epoxy, epoxied the tapered hope and applied it like a stiff patch. It was actually pretty easy. I recommend everyone find something to do a big patch on, because once you've done it you can always do it. Your friends are a huge plus. For future surveying I'd suggest documenting inside the hull, fairing etc... whatever a future buyer or insurer would want to see to understand that indeed it's just a hull patch, (with frame, keel, lines, etc.... all still in the original place.)
@BreakingWavesSailingАй бұрын
Good tips! Yes fiberglassing is definitely a learnt skill an we were happy to have our pals show us the way. I kind of look foward to my next (hopefully much less traumtic) fiberglass project. We have a detailed survey from the professional inculding lots of photos of the repair process which I think should cover us for any future insurance or new owner needs.

NIce work. Your experience is exactly why an encapsulated keel is the safest. Anyone can make a mistake but this keel and boat construction may very well have saved your lives. This type of boat takes care of you when you forget to take care of it. I love the design of modern production boats, but other than coastal sailing in known waters, I would only have classic plastic. My current boat is an '84 Shannon 43 with a similar hull design for this very reason.
@BreakingWavesSailingАй бұрын
Thanks! Ours is actually a bolt on keel, bur agreed encapsulated would have had a bette chance to survive if the grounding was worse.
