Ahhh sweet memories of my babies at that age. Being a busy mom and a hands on dad, you make my memories all come rushing back. Believe it or not, these ARE the best good ole days.... cherish them and take lots of pics and video's to remember them by. Nice work on the tiles by the way

You don’t give up, Amy I admire your push, I remember watching you when you started from scratch and now you are going to do it. Keep blogging your process. Inspired by you I got thin cement sheet and cut out squares painted in acrylic and glazed them, nothing near your ones but it gives me pleasure every time I look at them.

Clement and Juliette are growing so quickly! You've obviously been doing quite a bit of work around the chateau and coach house that we haven't seen before. It is looking like a welcoming and liveable home. How fortunate are your kids to grow up surrounded by history, plants, animals, and places to explore. It must be spring there with new life all around them. Hoping you are all well and recovering from the winter crud that kept you down for so long. ❤

Amy, you are very talented. I got lost on several turns, but see the results are grand and it will be beautiful. Your children are learning all kinds of things just by being exposed to your projects. Love the way Clement readily agrees that it is very beautiful. What a little sweetheart. You're patient, thorough, and stay with it. Lovely...

Smart! Maybe a duplicate of each of the tiles with a special shape, and a few of the simple ones? Also, foolish question perhaps but, can't the allowance for grout be variable, so as to take up some of the slack from unknown shrinkage?

Amy, it helps to make a cottle that can be disassembled with at least a 5cm border all around and 5cm plus the depth of the tile. I use vaseline to coat the cottle for an easy release of the mold and use plasticine clay (reusable) or your clay (that you then throw away after making the mold) to seal the seams of the cottle and the bottom non-stick base you place it upon. Coat the bottom of the nonstick board your cottle sits upon with dish soap just before placing your tile in it. Center your tile. The wet dish soap will help to grab the tile so it doesn't move around while you pour the plaster mold. Be sure to use Potter's plaster and not Plaster of Paris or your molds will fail as they aren't strong and hard enough. When you make the tiles, the mold will draw the water from the wet clay slab you mold into and shrink it enough for it to easily drop out of the mold. Make sure you get all the plaster off the tiles before firing them. I have 2.5cm x 10cm x 46cm boards that I attach a 2.5cm x 10cm x 10cm board at a right angle to at one end. They can easily be clamped together with the short board of one to the long board of another to create the cottle to the size you need for your tile and are reusable repeatedly. For the base, I use a piece of laminated wood shelving. Don't use strand board as the water will blow its glue and it will expand. A good way to mix the plaster & judge how much to add is to start with the water and add plaster to it slowly. The water will hydrate the plaster and cause it to sink. When the plaster forms an island that doesn't quickly absorb into the water, stop adding plaster and gently stir the batch so as not to create bubbles trapped in the plaster. Gently pour the plaster not directly onto your tile, but along the side of it. That will also help keep the tile from moving around. Happy tile making!

Looks like things are coming along nicely. Its been so long since we saw the children, Clement has grown so much. Cool tractor toy Marc found at the rubbish dump for him. Little Juliette was sure having fun exploring all the hiding spots, lol. Pepper was a good jogging companion. Music choice was cheerful and retro feeling. Keep up the good work. You sharing your family life is a delightful escape from the craziness of the times. Best wishes on the tiles. That is a ton of work.

Mold release agent is also known as mold soap in the USA. Any liquid soap thinned 1/2 &1/2 with water will do. Brush a thin coat on the plaster after plaster it has cured for at least a week.

I worked with tiles for many years. You can make your tiles larger than you need. Bisk fier them then refier them as IF you glazed them, then cut the tile to size, fit them to make sure it looks like you want, then glaze and fier. The shrink will be minimal. You can use a band saw it sanders to get the shape you need. Disk grinder is great as well. Wishing you all the best. Big Bear Hugs from Arizona.
