Pregnancy, breast-feeding, gravity, or loss of skin elasticity can affect the shape and firmness of the breasts. Women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts can have a breast lift to raise and firm them, resulting in a more youthful breast contour. Some patients may have lost a significant amount of breast volume over time, and in such cases, implants can be inserted in conjunction with a breast lift.
The procedure takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is done under general anesthesia. There are typically 3 methods to perform the breast lift. These include the Inverted T (Wise Pattern), Vertical (Lollipop), or the Periareolar incision. The method of choice depends on the amount of excess skin present. Bruising and swelling generally lasts 2 weeks. Breast shape continues to improve for the first 6 months to first year after surgery.
