Agreed, It is a shame, that the franchise is basically dead at this point with BoF 6 being a piece of mobile crap. The dragon gene system was fun and rewarding, the characters interesting, the combat was not bad either. I prefer BoF 3 to 4 mostly because in 3, you actually transform into a dragon. While in 4 it is just a cutscene like in final fantasy 7.

Same. Can't wait to see what you think of it. I experienced it first and foremost at age 7, then again about every time my age has doubled until my most recent 3rd revisit. Its extremely interesting to see what the story can tell you based on your current understanding of the world. There are undoubtedly past advanced civilizations buried under our deserts, and the dragon mining/chrysm allegory is clearly a take on our societies use of fossil fuels. Such a brilliant game!

BoF III is the first RPG I ever got my hands on. I was late to the game because my brother hated the genre... And I was limited to playing his games. However, owning my own PS1, I rented this, and my world was shattered. The worlds! The experiences, next would be Xenogears and then FFVII, Ive been hooked on RPGs since.

What else is there to say about this classic? One thing; After maxing out the game clock, mastering all the masters and getting everyone(even Peco) to level 99, after demonstrating my ability to slay Archmages and Berserkers unscathed, and even after completing the fairy village(and guessing the 'hits or misses' game on the FIRST TRY(once), one thing still eludes me. That damn Goo King Sword. Well played, Capcom.

This review may be almost 4 years old but it inspired me to give this classic a try. The way you presented the game, and the love you clearly had for it in you tone spoke to me and made it so I had to know for myself what could've inspired such an amazing review. :- O My expression literally when i first time saw Rei reappeared after a long absence. He is simply one of the best companions in any rpg , kinda wild but very effective (skill from beginning of a game, used by weak goblin will make from him a killing machine "command: if i remember correctly). Ahh memories ,it was soo good game in any aspect, it's kinda sad that i can't say the same thing about successors, but still i really enjoy my time spent on IV . Anyway, it is and will be my favorite jrpg of all time, behind it is for sure Xenogears. By the way do You have in plan to make someday Xenogears review ?? Great review you earned one more subscriber . Cheers Man.

For anyone who didn't have the difficulty of obtaining the Goo King sword jammed into their heads yet, I'm a person who's played and beat this game 7 times and only one of those was a 100% run. The only item I was missing was the Goo King sword. I shot up from level 63 on Ryu, Level 59 on Rei and Level 61 on Peco to Level 99 on all of them just to get this thing and I only fought Goo Kings. Let's put that nail on the coffin.

obi0peco no, because neither of them guarantee I'm still getting that weapon, it just increases the odds and my luck is so crap that it's still painful no matter what I do. I don't try for the Goo King sword anyways aside from that one time because he instantly kills anyone under level 55(or at least he completely murdered Ryu, Rei, Nina, Momo and Peco under level 55 -_-) and I'm not level grinding just for an item ever again. It's just unnecessary.(Looking at you FF4 Post Game >_>)

And it's Very feasible to kill him in two turns. I use Charm with Ryu, Garr goes Last Resort, Rei goes Weretiger. In the Second turn, Ryu uses Aura, Rei attacks and Garr uses Triple Blow. The party level I'm using is between 40-47, and I can kill him everytime he doesnt escape in the second turn.

My favorite part of BOF3 is the fact that, mostly, its about Ryu and who he is. You are not really saving the world, or trying to stop an evil god from killing everyone or anything like that. You are just...trying to find out who Ryu is. oh, and the desert section at the end can die in a fire lol

Even today, I still occasionally play this game on my old ps1 console. It's one of my all-time favorites. One of my favorite things about this game is that the main antagonist is not a typical evil villain. She legitimately wants to protect the world, but she does it through oppression, not unlike Injustice Superman.

For anyone curious, the BoF3 PSP port is on the PS3 PSN shop. However, it can only be accessed via the PS3 but you can't copy games from the PS3 to the PSP. I don't even think the PSP can access the shop anymore assuming you can even manage to connect to WiFi anymore as the PSP is incompatible with modern WIFi security.

I have so many great memories of Breath of Fire 3. I rented the SNES games, but for this game, I had a friend that owned it. We would play it constantly over at his house. I loved the game so much, I had to buy it for myself. The PS1 was the first system that I really started buying games for myself regularly. I really liked where you talked about the dedication to the dragons. I never really thought about it. Deep stuff, man. ;) And I think I spent way too much time doing the fishing minigame than I should have. :P Hahaha. I love how the PSP is region-free. Thanks! When I was around 14 or so, I played through Breath of Fire III and managed to get all the way to the final boss, who kicked my butt pretty hard several times. I think that I was pretty under-leveled at the time though. Playing through this time, I took my time with the game and tried to get a bunch of extras. Because of that, when I got to the final boss, I stomped her into the ground. Felt great. But I think what I'm getting at is that it depends on how you play. If you're trying to rush through the game, you'll probably be under-leveled, and it can be very challenging. On the other hand, if you fight enough along the way to your destination, you won't have any real issues. One last thing that will change the difficulty of the game is how well you utilize the masters in the game. If you pick the right ones at the right times, the game is a breeze. :)

I don't think I'd be able to play through the game again, but when I played it back then, it was my everything for a while. I lived in that world ...yet somehow I forgot most of the things. Still, I spent so much time with it that I made a whole library of action replay cheats after playing through it a couple of times. Why can I remember so little, though? Only a few scenes which aren't even all that important, like dealing with those sea lice in some mechanic ocean city (I think that' close to the desert trek toward the end), and other such things. So strange...did I eat too much aluminium powder and have gotten early onset alzheimers? Boy, howdy, though, the designs of the character and enemies are still top tier (imho). This game has a special place in my heart, but I can't explain why I forgot so many things other than impressions (Nina and Ryu and many undead, etc). Edit: Although now more and more is coming back, but still mostly impressions ) Anyway. The game was super comfy. I would recommend it to anyone. It's long, though, if you do everything, which I also recommend...and why I won't play it again, but don't rush it on your first playthrough. Deffo best for Highschoolers/Youth with a lot of free time (and possibly quarantined adults ...lol)

The contrast between the cute graphics and muzak, and the morally ambiguous characters and plot, is a unique selling point. The only problem is that you need to know where the masters are and what stat benefits they give you before you start playing if you want to level up properly. Getting moves by studying enemies was a nice idea but was so unreliable i hardly used it. I love how battles happen in the world you explore and that you can use battle moves in the environment (making the character formation thing sensible). One problem is that it's hard to level up more than 3 characters so you only really get to know 2 other characters. It reminds me of FF6 in a lot of ways.

Another great review. Even though i completely disagree with one point. Individual characters are more fleshed out than ever. Compare it to the Archer From BoF1 who just happens to be around and goes "Hey i dislike evil dude as well! I'll tag along!" or the monkey from 2 "Hey you have cute girls in your party! I'll tag along!" I avoid names because they change all the time in every version of the game. In this game you can talk to your entire party everytime you put up camp. And whenever something's done storywise their thoughts and conversations change. Like when you're alone with the guardian and camp right before the midpoint of the game. So maybe not in cutscenes or just storyprogression but if you take the time to talk to your party after progress in the story they will become the most fleshed out to this point. It's been a while since i played 4 but i think the camp feature was the same in there.

Breath of fire 3 was the first Breath of fire game i have ever played, and its my favorite, tho i have only played 1, 3 and 4 (3 is the only one i finished, tho im really close to finishing 1 and 4, and ill be playing 2 when im done with one) but then again, Breath of fire 3 was a big part of my childhood so that might be it

Man! Just finished this game today...completely loved it! the art style is top-notch sprite based, it's beatiful, I really liked...although the ending felt a bit...lackluster imo, nevertheless, this game is a must play for RPG fans

i wish more rpgs of the ps1 era would have used a similar art style instead of the polygons. capcom had really good art in the 90s.
