Aww thanks for the shoutout man. Great review of the game. It was one of my favorite PS1 titles growing up and I'm glad you enjoyed playing through it. Honestly It kinda would've been a bummer if you thought it sucked. Anyway can't wait to see what you think of Suikoden III. I think it has mixed reviews, but I really enjoyed that one too. Not as much as the first two, but it was still decent once it got going. Also the intro movie is fantastic.

I thought three had the best STORY out of the entire series but it didn't feel "suikoden" enough if that makes sense. I always gave it a pass because it was the first to transition into 3d and had the creator stuck around for another game I think they could have nailed the formula while capturing that classic feel. I think 5 was the ps2 suikoden that FELT like the first two games more than any others. It wasn't perfect either but it was a step in the right direction towards recapturing the magic of the first two games. I think if they could build off what they did with five 6 would have been a real treat. Nice to find another suikoden 2 fan and just talk jrpgs. I'm really digging this channel.

Regarding your talk on "holy grail RPGs," I guess I have to agree for the most part. Suikoden II is my favorite game, and it did indeed change my life, most likely due to timing, since when I first played in back in 1999, I was a teenager who made a move from what seemed like one world to another. The fact that I was already a big fan of the first game and the sequel ended up being everything I could ask for in a role-playing game definitely helped solidify my high opinion of the game, but what it provided me was a means to fill in a huge gap that suddenly appeared in my life, and for that it will always have a special place in my heart. The memories I have from the game, even beyond just the core gameplay experience, are among some of my fondest. That being said, I'll take that Suikoden II off your hands now. You already have that super rare, not-dollar-bin-material Japanese version I sent you. Thanks in advance.

I've been playing RPGs since the original Dragon Warrior on the NES -- back before I even knew what an RPG was, and I thought of them as "those games with towns and items" -- and Suikoden II is probably my favorite game of all time. Every several years I go back and play it again just to make sure I'm not looking at it through rose-tinted glasses, and it's still a fantastic game. The level of detail is still amazing to me; almost every plot scene has unique sprites and animations not used anywhere else, and there are tons of little secrets. For example, did you know that when you have to jump off the cliff with Jowy near the beginning, if you refuse to split up 108 times, the flashback sequence that follows will be in color rather than black & white? I know that's one of those things that sounds like an internet myth, but I tested it myself and it's 100% true. Thanks for reviewing the game. I'm sure the experience isn't quite the same as it was for somebody who played the game when it first came out with no expectations, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I love the idea of building a talented community of 108 separate specialists to fight for a good cause. I feel like that in itself is a good message for a video game to have. Man, great job on the editing of the opening gameplay footage. Must have taken a while to get it all synced up with the music in such a satisfying way. And as for your points on "holy grail" games, I think most would agree that it is best to have tempered expectations with any game you play. In fact, one could argue that certain games will have an even greater impact if you go in knowing as little as possible, totally unfettered by overblown notions of a game's perceived "greatness".

She goes through one of the roughest(By this I mean, she has a really bad time) character arcs throughout the game: - Reuniting with Jowy at Greenhill and hearing both Jowy and Riou refuse to back down from fighting each other - Her confusion with Jowy entrapping Riou and Teresa at Jowston as with Luca being dead, she and many others thought the war could finally end - Her wanting her brother to just run during the Tinto events - And finally her realizing that she cannot stop the storm that is blooming and has Shu lie for her You can see her mental fortitude get slowly ripped apart as the game progresses and it's both brilliant and tragic.

I used to own a copy of Suikoden 2 physical, got it on the cheap from a video rental place going out of business, having zero idea what kind of game it was. No case only the disc, and covered in rental store stickers and a bit scratched up (but still playable). I love the game, but then it came out on PSN and I opted to sell my copy for a bit of money... that loose disc with the scratches and stickers fetched $80 on E-bay! A part of me still wishes I owned a physical copy of it but the world of physically owning such priceless treasures is a hobby I can't see myself affording. I love physical collections but more importantly, I love having access to great games, and I am very happy to have a digital version of this I can play on my PS3, PSP, or Vita.

Great review Derek. I'll pop up here and there for Suikoden 3. Hopefully you'll find yourself in the group of people who enjoy the game! Suikoden 2 for me was like Game of Thrones back when I was a kid. At the time it gave me insight on politics and ethics before I knew I had an interest in those topics. I remember seeing A Song of Fire and Ice being suggested for people who wanted more stories like Suikoden 2 and final fantasy tactics, back over a decade ago when Game of Thrones was barely known (to my knowledge). Jowy and Delita were Machiavellian characters who seemed complex at the time for RPG characters, and I wanted more of these types of characters.

Start with suikoden 1, because it's short and you can import your save file into suikoden 2

This is a life changing game. Not because my life was easily changed but because it informed my perspective on story telling and philosophy. That sucks that it didn’t change yours.

I'm proud to still own original copies of this and part one that I keep on display on my shelf.....along with the first Grandia and FFVII

I beat the game but don't know what song he's referring to for a midgame boss. Can someone tell me the song title?

It's the song from the beginning of the review, The battle against Neclord! What a rad song! :D
