Sina and Thomas breathe new life into a mid-90s pop ballad. Let's swatch... ;D THE SONG - "Breathe" was written by Scottish singer-songwriter James "Midge" Ure. It's the title song of his fourth solo album 'Breathe' which was recorded in 1995 at various studios including Church Studios, Orca Studios, and Sunset Studios in Los Angeles and studios in San Francisco, Dublin and Ure's studio in Bath. Although finished in 1995, release was delayed by the record label. As a single, "Breathe" was released on Mar 22, 1996. The album 'Breathe' has a more complicated release history - Mar 25, 1996 for Europe, May 20 for the UK, and June 6 for the US. AllMusic states the release date as June 18 - presumably being for the US. Neither the single nor the album appear to have charted in the US and Canada but when the single was used in a TV commercial for Swatch in 1997/98, it became well-known and hit #1 in Austria and Italy, #2 in Spain, #12 in Germany, and #17 in Switzerland. It had a modest showing in the UK peaking at #70. James (Jim) Ure started playing in bands in 1969 when he was around 16 years old. In 1972, he joined a band that had another member named Jim. To avoid confusion, they turned Ure's "Jim" backwards to Mij (Midge). Since that time, he has used the name Midge Ure as his stage name. Midge played with several bands in the '70s and, in July 1979, joined Thin Lizzy after Gary Moore left. In 1980, he joined Ultravox in time to record their album 'Vienna' which spawned the single of the same name that became a huge hit in 1981. Aside from his fame as the frontman of Ultravox, Midge is also known for co-writing and producing "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Along with Bob Geldof, he also co-organized Band Aid, Live Aid, and Live 8. THE COVER-COLLABORATION - In the original version of "Breathe" Midge went for a lush, atmospheric arrangement. The album has credits for instruments like mandolin, melodica, Uillieann bagpipes, hurdy gurdy, harmonium, etc. For most of the song, the drums (played by either David Palmer or Andy Kravitz) are way back in the mix. It's really only in the repeating chorus outro that they make their presence felt. In this collaboration, Thomas goes for a simpler, heavier arrangement transforming the pop ballad into a power ballad. Without much inspiration to take from the original drummer, Sina told Rosanna, "I had to compose the drum track. I followed my instincts." Those instincts were right on target. It was Sina who suggested "Breathe" to Thomas. She was familiar with Midge Ure through his work with Ultravox and she particularly liked their songs "Vienna" and "Hymn". Having done a previous collab with Thomas, Sina said, "I think his voice is perfect for this!" Thomas told Rosanna, "I listened to it and was promptly touched; I had heard the song before in a distant past. The 90s mean a lot to me because I believe they represent a deep part of me. There's a certain particularity in this song's atmosphere that the desire to cover it came naturally. Hence perhaps my voice being 'compatible' with the song. Aside from covers, Thomas also writes originals. He told Rosanna he'll be releasing a lot in the coming year. One that you can check out now is "Limitless Fantasy" on his Soundcloud - soundcloud.com/thomas-kop/limitless-fantasy-1 For Sina's fans, Thomas told Rosanna, "I feel honoured to be part of her channel and admire her Herculian passion!" This is the way real musicians do covers. They don't try for a note-for-note copy (unless they're a tribute band :D) but rather a transformative version. It is their interpretation that makes it unique! Well done! FUN FACT - My own recollection of "Breathe" was from that Swatch TV commercial that I mentioned. Perhaps that's your memory too? Take a trip down memory lane - kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYempYWEZ9J7b9U Check out Sina's previous collab with Thomas at kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn-TZodjn9V1rtE and visit his KZbin channel where there is an alternate edit - kzbin.infovideos

@@julietp.5877 Hi Juliet, you are the second best thing about friday's, another great read today. what a magnificent cover of breathe breathtaking.I played drums between 1968 to 1979 it's the hardest thing to get 5 people who all like each other and want to play the same music.Sina has done that with the Gas.It great to see her playing live and enjoying herself as do the rest of the lad's and who would not playing tight kick ass in your face original songs. In my day they would have had three surefire hits.I was hoping with rosanna's insight you could tell me how the Gas got together.love & peace

I'm from Oregon, sitting in a bar in Chiang Mai Thailand about an hour ago. A German owned bar. I met two dudes from Cologne. I ask if they've heard of The Gas. Not only have they heard of The Gas, they've been to a show and showed me some video on their phone. They didn't really remember the guys in the band but they couldn't stop talking about the little drummer girl with eight arms who stole the show.

Wow, so this is how a "Sina's transformative version" looks and sounds like. I particularly like that part where the drum groove has lots of cymbals then gradually develops into a march (almost, but regresses back to the cymbal work), that did breathe life into this tight composition which is very well sung by Thomas - Congratulations! And last but not the least, I'd like to thank Juliet and Rosanna for their comprehensive analysis - I just couldn't resist reading their comment before I made mine :))

You don't need a forest of cymbals etc. around you to show us how to play the drums. A simple drumkit is enough for you to make this song different. Different ? I mean better then most drummers will do. To each song you cover, you add something special. It's the Sina Sound.

Just great to hear and see Ms. Sina work the hat and cymbals in this amazing cover! Thomas Kop brought a measured, moving vocal to ‘Breathe’ that just works perfectly in this arrangement! Guitar, piano, lights, cameras, mix and editing come together very nicely, so another outstanding job by Mike and all of the Sina-drums team ... for me this picks up where the origins left off and takes it even farther, what more can be asked of a cover performance? 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎤🥁🎹🎸👍🏻

Hi Sina, the fox tail on the head is exceptional! I liked your fine work on drums in this ballad, you managed to significantly improve it! Sina, I think this is one of your best works! Your instrument sounds great...! If I had a magic wand, I would want Sina to play this song today at Eurovision! This thing would be very useful there, especially since the trend is slow songs this year at Eurovision! I thought today what song will be today from Sina on the eve of the Eurovision song contest, and for a long time no cooperation from Sina! And today I see a ballad, it's a great collaboration that is suitable for this competition!

With every waking breath I breathe I see what life has dealt to me With every sadness I deny I feel a chance inside me die Give me a taste of something new To touch, to hold to pull me through Send me a guiding light that shines Across this darkened life of mine Breathe some soul in me Breathe your gift of love to me Breathe life to lay 'fore me Breathe to make me breathe For every man who built a home A paper promise for his own He fights against an open flow Of lies and failures we all know To those who have and who have not How can you live with what you've got? Give me a touch of something sure I could be happy evermore Breathe some soul in me Breathe your gift of love to me Breathe life to lay 'fore me To see, to make me breathe Breathe your honesty Breathe your innocence to me Breathe your word and set me free Breathe to make me breathe This life prepares the strangest things The dreams we dream of what life brings The highest highs can turn around To sow love's seeds on stony ground Breathe Breathe Breathe some soul in me Breathe your gift of love to me Breathe life to lay 'fore me To see, to make me breathe Breathe your honesty Breathe your innocence to me Breathe your word and set me free Breathe to make me breathe
