THE SONG - "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin was written by John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant. It's the second track on the band's fourth album which was released on Nov 8, 1971. It's also the album's second single released in the US on Feb 21, 1972. "Rock and Roll" entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart at #77 on Mar 18, 1972 and peaked at #47 on Apr 15. It held that spot for two weeks and was last charted at #53 on Apr 29, 1972. The song was developed from a spontaneous jam. The band was working on "Four Sticks" at their Headley Grange mansion retreat. John Bonham was frustrated with the drum pattern and, in anger, started playing something different - a drum riff based on what Earl Palmer had played for Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'" in 1957. Fortunately the tape was rolling and the band picked up on it and the basic song was finished in 30 minutes. Plant later composed the lyrics for "It's Been a Long Time" - the original working title. Drummer Jason Bonham described his late father's drumming on "Rock and Roll" as the hardest Zeppelin song to play. He told 'American Songwriter' magazine, "a lot of people out there try and play it, and really it's a two-handed shuffle all the way through, playing the sixteenth notes, it's not just boom bap-boom-bap-boom- bap, it's boom-boom-bap-bap-boom-boom-bap-bap on the snare and the hi-hat. It's a hard one to play properly." THE COLLABORATION - Back, by popular demand, are Led Zep experts Alyona Yarushina, Andrei Cerbu, Mike Wilbury, and, of course, Sina. They brought you the very well received cover of "Black Dog" on Apr 20, 2018 and, about a year ago, Sina and Andrei covered "Whole Lotta Love". Alyona has other collabs in Sina's older videos and has a long musical history with Mike Wilbury playing in separate Beatles tribute bands from 1999 to 2006. In 2009 Alyona had some shows in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. With some American musicians, she formed the ALYONA AND WONDERWALL band to play Led Zep and Beatles covers. On this collab, Alyona plays piano (unseen). On the original Led Zep recording, the piano was played by Ian Stewart who had been a very early member of The Rolling Stones. He also played on "Boogie with Stu" from Zep's album 'Physical Graffiti". THE ICON - According to Niki, Alyona (or Алена) could have been Arwen but is not. Speculation about Emzee continues. She worked with Katrina on something recently but FB received no tracks for Fang & Claw so it might be a private project. I thought Andrei was going to set the guitar on fire the way he was playing it. He moves so fast with his hands. It is so hard to wait for Friday to come, but yet so worth it. I started in 1965, with a scrappy book of chords. I am left handed, but only had an old right handed Hofner guitar, so i just strapped it on, learned the chords upside down, nobody to help me, and went on from there. Still going. I find women often do a better cover of young Plant’s vocals. They get the rasp, pitch, attack, and emotion right - but none I’ve seen has matched his power. Guess that’s the benefit of those larger lungs. In any case, this is a great cover of a difficult song. Really wonderful!
