i could never understand why people hate on the "new girl" or "boy" i was taught to always be helpful and if it takes more time to show someone , thats fine by me , i've been in situations where they were mean to me , but all it does it makes everyone work harder , it so much better when everyone is a team player , job becomes less stressful and as it already can be. People need to come together and be nicer to newbies.

People being mean in healthcare and not cooperating is messed up because it can interfiere with providing quality patient care. I hope that it changes soon...

I 100% agree. If you disagree with something have a respectful conversation with that person. If you aren't capable of it, talk to a lead or someone that can approach the subject correctly.

It is so true that no one knows about respiratory therapist. Even some students don't have a full comprehension of an RT's duties when they first begin. It is sad the lack of resources out there. I hope more youtube channels pop up soon.

I love your videos I currently work at a teaching hospital as a respiratory tech in Massachusetts and it’s been incredible I think it’s insane that any RT would try to test a new grad with changing things and seeing if they notice that is crazy to me. I feel as though working as a team in any aspect of the medical field is vital to achieve the best patient care. I never understood how anyone can work in the medical Field just for the paycheck. Of course it’s important to make money for what you do but I can’t imagine working with sick individuals everyday and seeing death frequently and not having compassion for the patient and family affected.

I’m a second year DPT student, and I think RTs are awesome!!🙏🏼 And the lack of awareness is definitely in PT as well even though it requires 7 years of s school! I feel you medical shows only show MDs and nurses

Breathe Easy thank you. I have several friends that are respiratory therapist and they have the same challenges. The respect for the profession is lacking. They say others try to do certain aspects of their job and minimize their responsibilities. They too tell me that they speak up and will not allow others to take over their responsibilities. I am starting my program next week and am super excited. Although respiratory therapist have these challenges, one thing that does not change is their absolute love for what they do and that is what convinced me to pursue this career. I was surprised to hear that some more experienced respiratory therapist “eat their young” I always thought this was a problem with others and not the therapists...

Educating is good amd needed but all these professional organizations need to take that money we pay them and work to put us out there as a needed part of the team. With this pandemic all you hear on the news is nurses and doctors ... not the people running the equipment needed for these patients. Here in Cali NP's who got their masters through online programs are doing the intubation with on the job training. And again I ask where is the nbrc???

I’m in grade 11 right now in Canada, and I’m very interested in becoming an RT !! Could you tell me how long you were in school to become an RT?

That is great! I believe Canadian schools are a bit different than the US, but my program was accelerated and about 2 years, including prerequisites. I'm getting my BSRT now which will take about 1.5 years.

It's a 3 year program. In Nova Scotia you go to Dal for 3 years but can go for 4 years if you want to do research

I was an R.T. for nearly 40 years, and I assure you that no one I loved would be directed towards Resp Therapy schooling. Instead R.N. offers far more specialty avenues a young person can travel.

@@mmmmmmmm1942 An R.N. can(an R.T. CAN'T) specialize in : 1. Nephrology 2. Gastro 3. OB/GYN 4. Bariatrics 5. As well as assisting an M.D. in most proceedures, so YES the two professions are NOT allowed the same perogative, yet take the same prerequisites and gain an AS. Again, avoid such limitations and become an R.N. or better yet P.A.

i have no clue if there any rt watching this now. if so im in long beach ca, im older , at risk with heart disease and i get bronchitis often from bad sinus and i am scared to death. this virus is respiratory and fluid builds in the lungs. unless you can breathe which i dont want to get there , your at home panicking. my questions are , how can i stop fluid build up, what can i eat, take or do to help prevent. do inhalers help, obviously i dont have a breathing machines. im so cared of pneumonia. any help, advice or just responding would be appreciated. thank you to all your hard work. i wish tests would be given to at risk people like me.

Hello Al, First thing I would suggest is checking with your healthcare provider for direct medical advice if you need it. That is going to be the best place to start. Many health insurances/providers offer a phone service (Telehealth) that you may able to use instead of going to a doctor in person, if you need anything. I would also recommend social distancing, washing your hands regularly (especially after touching surfaces, door knobs, etc.). not touching your face, eyes, nose etc. and cleaning high touch surfaces such as light switches, door knobs, counters, etc. and as always staying up with recommendations from the CDC and the WHO. This is the one of the easiest way to avoid coming into contact with someone who may be sick. Please speak with a physician should you start experiencing symptoms or need personal medical advice.

@@BreatheEasyRRT yes we all know about staying home and social distance and cleaning. well the young people dont. what we dont know is why some people can get tested and some turned away. we need more help from other states no as infected. we need more places turned in hospitals and mash units. we need drive thru swab resting, mial testing like colon screening....we need a vaccine quicker than in one year. you simply dont know who is infected without someone showing symptoms...so test and test and retest...

@@BreatheEasyRRT I spoke to a professor, while pursuing my law degree who assured it's nearly impossible to change any of those issues due to long entrenched presumptions regarding the profession.

Ah so it is better to remain apathetic and not even try? As an aside, talking to a professor does not constitute as a contribution to improving the issues you mentioned. A few examples of things that would contribute to those issues would be, being an active member in state and national societies, advocating within your facility and community, and setting an example for future RTs and other HCPs.
