Breathtaking early film of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from over 100 years ago

This is an incomplete travelogue originally entitled Views of Rio de Janeiro by the French Gaumont Company in 1909. It shows views of Rio's sea wall, a tree-lined canal, the famous Carioca aqueduct across which a tram is passing and the ascent of a small steam train up the Corcovado mountain railway. Corcovado railway would be electrified the very next year, while it would be another 22 years before the appearance of Corcovado's most iconic landmark, the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Este é um diário de viagem incompleto, originalmente intitulado Vistas do Rio de Janeiro pela French Gaumont Company, em 1909. Mostra vistas do paredão do Rio, um canal arborizado [onde hoje é o canal do mangue], o famoso aqueduto carioca por onde passa um bonde e a subida de um pequeno trem a vapor pela ferrovia do Corcovado. A ferrovia do Corcovado seria eletrificada no ano seguinte, enquanto outros 22 anos passariam antes do aparecimento do marco mais icônico do Corcovado, a estátua do Cristo Redentor.

@Giselle5253 it is, it’s a very beautiful place. It just has more poverty than places like Rome, pairs, London, New York, etc. I never said that meant it wasn’t beautiful. Sometimes impoverished communities add to the city, especially in Latin America and Europe, because there is so much life and uniqueness to their home and culture.

Sabe de nada, nessa época o Brasil era tão vira lata da França que fez um bairro só pra pessoas nobres espelhado na França, pra entrar nesse bairro as pessoas tinha que estar vestidas da forma que ver no vídeo, mas por fora desse bairro ninguém mais se vestia dessa forma

I know that's very pretty, but remember this is the rich part. Filming was something special and difficult, so they only filmed the prettiest things, there was no reason to film or take photo of poverty, for example. They wanted to show a pretty brazil

Brasil não tem uma grande atração turística urbana. Em algo arquitetônico ou de engenharia passa vergonha.... não é a toa que é lembrado apenas por selva, uma resposta clara. Perdeu muito de construções históricas, pois ficaram abandonadas, demolidas, e arruinadas. Os vizinhos hispanos pelo menos preservaram melhor a parte urbana, notório em igrejas, estradas, edifícios, monumentos, por exemplo de comparação

Brazil has nostalgia for some era that never actually happened. This is only 20 years after slavery was abolished by law. Rio downtown was full of terracotta and wooden housing, more than 600 "cortiços" and a population of more than 500k black people living in the city. How many non-white people do we get to see in this footage? Rio is proudly a black city and this white version of it that people dream of never actually happened.

Muito bem notado. Sem dúvida a miséria era menos aparente por haver uma população menor e não foi filmada aí. So diria que o Rio é uma cidade orgulhosamente diversa. Qdo dizemos que é preta ingnoramos por completo os indígenas que fazem parte da matriz étnica formadora da cidade e tb sao minoria, além das ondas de imigrantes que tb caracterizam o Rio como é hj.
