Glenn went to LA with no prospects and just a few dollars in his pocket. He was playing on a recording session for some insignificant recording. Next door Ricky Nelson was in a recording session and needed a guitar player. He heard this guitar being played and told one of his band members to go get him. Glenn brought his guitar over and they handed him some sheet music. He said I don’t need that. In fact, I don’t can’t read music. He told them to just start playing and of course he amazed everyone with his ability to play by ear. I think he was the greatest guitar player ever and what a singer. “Second to no one.”

There is a lot that can be said for some who can read sheet music but the creativity and instinctual moves by those who "play by ear" is breathe taking. I can read music to sing but play guitar by ear and sing harmony by ear. A little of both worlds. You can only exist in the academic world with academic credentials.

I'm from New York City and I grew up liking country music because of people like Jimmy Webb, Glenn Campbell and Kenny Rogers. I also started liking Willie Nelson after that and that opened the door for me to really become interested in Country music with people like Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline and many others. But the song Wichita Lineman was the first country I heard that made me think, wait a minute, country music is just as good as Elton John, The Carpenters and The Eagles. Cheers to Jimmy Webb !!!!

@@moruslorus6719 Yes, I know and I agree!! I love the album of Glen and Jimmy doing "sessions". I think Glen has a pink patterned shirt through it all, but I can't be sure. It's been too long since I listened and watched it. To believe that Jimmy wrote and created the masterpiece known as MacArthur Park at the age of 19 just slays my brain. And then, to use his own words, he found the voice he wanted for his songs, and that is when the 2 of them began to make amazing music together. Jimmy always talked about how he wanted Galveston to be slower, i.e. "gravitas", and the older Glen got, the more he slowed it down to where Jimmy had wanted it all along. Have you ever listened to the interview with Alice Cooper on here? It's all about their relationship. Glen and Alice played golf together every chance they got. He talks about how "who would have ever thought a country singer and a rock and roll singer would end up being such good friends". I may not have that totally correct, but it's close. He tells a hilarious story about how late they were for tee time and whoever was driving, was going waaaay over the speed limit and a camera caught them. The local police have a big copy of that picture of those 2 "boys" and the looks on their faces. It is so worth listening to. Sorry my response is so long.

@@survivrs not a problem at all! Yes I love those session videos. Love the way Glen sings Galveston and a number of other songs in that. Jimmy and Glen are just an amazing combo. I’m so glad the world brought them two together. If there’s one thing I wish I was able to do, it would be to have gone to see Glen live. I’m only 22 but he’s been my absolute favourite artist for about 5 years now. Don’t think I go more than a couple of days without listening to one of his many hits

They really needed each other in one sense. Jimmy Webb's music is second to none. Glenn one of the few session guitarists to make a mark in the public eye. A True blue "Wrecking Crew " member. So much talent and a Thousand Watt personality. I know his demons were news fodder for journalist whom News was a chance at separating themselves from the pack.

@@gwenniegirl50 True. Jimmy's songs really pulled Glen from being "just a session musician" to the forefront of Country Music and beyond. I am a guitarist myself. I can sing too. But my talents on a six string is nothing as compared to Glen. But back in those days just being a sessions guy was "second tier" to the general public.. Not to me because I appreciated all the talented session guys were ever they played. They both needed each other and they both benefited from that relationship.

Just a correction of a common mistaken belief - Jimmy Webb did not write the song MacArthur Park for Richard Harris. Richard did have a great hit with the song. In his autobiography Jimmy gives an explanation to the lyrics of MacArthur Park. Very interesting “backstory”.

In Jimmy's book he claimed he saw Elvis first performance in Vegas in '69. He said he remembers Elvis giving out scarves, and he was invited to Elvis dressing room after the show and saw a rack of his jewel-crusted jumpsuits. The only problem is, Elvis didn't start giving out scarves for another few years. And he didn't wear jewel-crusted suits for another few years either.
