On New Years Eve 1989, Glen Campbell sang three songs in the worship service of North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. "Southern Nights", "Suffer Little Children", and "Jesus and Me", all with just his guitar and voice.

Mr. Glen Campbell. He was the first celebrity I drove in the first Limousine I owned as Legacy Limousines in Joplin Missouri. It was sometime between 1995 & 1998. He had the Goodtime Theatre in Branson Mo. I spoke with him in the Airport restroom and told him I wanted to come see the show. He asked me how many tickets I needed to which I replied 4. He told me to call the theatre and they would have me 4 tickets complimentary. That was my most treasured "gratuity" if you will I have ever received. In the early 2000's, I sang several of Glen's tunes in Churches. See you on the other side Glen! ❤️🌴

Youre right... He doesn't get name-checked as one of the great guitar players of the last 50 years, but he definitely is one of the best. .... Usually only guitar players can see how intricate his playing is. And how difficult it is to play those licks while singing.

zyxmyk Not true. Thanks to KZbin, everyone who wants to know about him will find him here and learn what Glen was. Simple things like playing the William Tell Overture with his guitar ON HIS HEAD, and that's just a start. I know nothing about the guitar other than to identify it by it's strings, it's general shape and the many different sounds it can make depending on whether or not it's electric or acoustic, etc. Glen learned to play on a $5 guitar his mom bought with her sharecropping money when he was just a young boy. He learned how to play without music, he played by ear, went off to play for money with his uncle Boo, from there the rest is history, and up until the final day he played a guitar, he still couldn't read music. That is pure talent.

I was driving to work one day in the late 80s. I wasn't doing that well at the job. I was still single in my mid 30s. But I was steadfast in my belief in Christ. That morning I was listening to a Christian radio station, where they have a surprise song they wanted to play. I had been a country fan since freshman high school in 1969. I admired him back then. And then came his troubles. And I was sad. Why do people who shine have such troubles. They went on to play the song "Jesus and me". I said out loud in the car, "what? Is this a joke? No, I believe this is real!!! That was a great day at work. And a story I will always treasure of him, a bright star turning aroung to facing a mirror, shutting down his light, and reflecting the brilliant of true light. Paul McCartney, it's your turn! Oh

beauty for ashes A side note to that would be how Glen sang so many of Jimmy Webb's songs. They should have been glued together because together they were hit makers, the biggest being MacArthur Park, but also Galveston and Wichita Lineman to name a couple. His last wife Kim can be thanked for bringing him back to Christ. Going back to Jimmy, he was a preacher's son. One Sunday during the sermon, his dad noticed that Jimmy was reading a book rather than listening to the sermon and he called him out right there in the middle of the church service and sermon. Jimmy replied "A stranger in a strange land". His dad said something like "Well, I guess that could be said about Jesus as well" and continued his sermon. Jimmy was nearly peeing his pants because he knew he was going to get his butt beat that day. Of course he laughed as he told that story, but it was quite a few years after the fact.

@@mikeb620- I’m so sorry you feel bitter towards the Lord. The Lord didn’t “give him Alzheimer’s” my friend. We live in a broken world and bad things sometimes happen to good people. The Lord didn’t create us as automatons but rather with the incredible power of choice. So you can choose to live in bitterness or you can choose to seek out and embrace the author and source of everything that is good and lovely. 100% your choice my friend.

In 1966, I was walking downtown from my apartment in Durham, North Carolina, and right at the old Five Points, there was a stage set up for a formal ceremony opening a new bank (whose name I forget) but everyone was assembled and this tall young man (whom I had never heard of) walked out and began to strum his guitar and sing a song (whose title I forget) and I was literally arrested in mid-stride at the easy style and remarkable voice of Glen Campbell, and I have been a big fan ever since. RIP, Glen, you were one of a kind.

Well said and sung Glen/Phil, hope you improve there in heaven, so we can hear the ultimately most glorious praise of God. There is probably not a better musician on earth in your time here ... yet God is faithful and will complete the good work he began in each of us. Have been since I was 13 and my daddy ask me if I wanted this album, and it was "the one with Galveston and it had a big poster of him in it. He looked so young all the time, so I had a crush on him till I found out how old he was. My first date saw the poster and said he did not like it and he was too old for me anyway. I was 14 on our first date and James was 21.LOL. We ended up getting married nearly 4 yrs. later in 1973. But I am still a fan of Glen Campbell. Still have that album from 53 yrs. ago. We just celebrated our 49 anniversary. May 25, 2973.I hope I did not take up too much of your time. Hey, don't ask if you don't really want to know. 🥰🤣😂

I have such fond memories of this man who had such a wonderful way of picking, and what a great vocal quality this man had. It is so bad the way that he left us. I am glad though that he plays now for Jesus, face to face. We miss you Glen, but were happy to know where you are today.

He did this quite often when I lived in the area. He was a great guitarist/singer of all types of music. Missed greatly!

I am so glad he gave his life to Jesus. We are losing him slowly to Alzheimer's disease. It broke my heart to learn that. but being that Jesus is waiting for him, this eases the pain.

He sounds even better playing solo --- You can really hear how great his voice was without a band getting in the way. LUCKY FOLKS! ... and they didn't even have to buy a ticket!

The 70 people who gave a thumbs down on this video were obviously unbelievers and or just mentally ill. So we should pray for them, Thanks Dave for posting this video.

Yes. He’ s been one of the greatest guitar players ever to grace a stage. That’s undeniable. But, how about his extraordinary vocal range, his perfect pitch and the sheer power and beauty of his voice?
