Great video. I was on the Dalton IHC on the Angeles in 1966 and 1968, and "tanker rot" for two years. When I graduated forestry school I was a Helitack Foreman. My career took me to different jobs around the world. My best years were with the Dalton IHC. I ought to say all but the Loop Fire in 1966. We were just behind the El Cariso Hot Shots when the fire blew up on them causing many injuries and 12 fatalities. We weren't in the chimney where El Cariso was and had no injuries. I remember the blow up like it was yesterday and I still weep. Your job is mostly the same as then but there are some differences: paper sleeping bags, C-Rations, field pack consisted of a web belt with 2 canteens, a canteen holder for a head lamp, a piece of fire hose used as a file holster, and a tightly rolled sweat shirt, all 20 of us in an open stakeside crew truck as our "buggy: sharpening fire tools while sitting on the ground and holding it secure with your legs. We sharpened our tools first thing on any break. Fooid wasn't catered but cooked in fire camp. The quality was as good as the Service Chief was. I think the best was Anselmo Lewis, my DR. I could go on but talk to some old timers in your district. They have plenty of stories. Yes, my hot shot years were the best.

Join a Interagency Hotshot Crew and: 1--Walk more miles in a year than you ever conceived you could, much of it on ground the public would never choose to walk on. 2--Carry more weight on your back than you thought possible and lift things you didn't think humans could get together to pick up. 3--Eat, walk and sleep in dust, days at a time. Pull or blow the biggest boogers you have ever imagined the human body can produce. If you don't, you can't breathe through your nose. 4--Find out why some say that having a drip torch in your hands is the most fun you can have while standing up. 5--Hear the grossest jokes you are ever going to hear in your life. 6--Form some incredible relationships. You have everyone else's back and so do they. 7--Be a GS-4 making as much as a GS-7 or 8. Be a GS-5 making as much a a GS-9. 8--Maybe you will quit and not stay in fire, maybe you will go on to be a crew sup, maybe a batt chief or a division chief. 9--Be respected by people in fire management. 10--Realize the public doesn't have the slightest idea of what you do. 11--Endure eating fire sack lunches, probably the biggest negative and most complained about things on a fire. 12--Marriage and family life will be extraordinarily difficult. Just having a long term relationship will be hard to find. That's all I can think of for now. No doubt others can add more or edit what I've written.

VolunteerEMS smart way to start would be to get your papers so you're not a liability to any possible employer willing to break the law to hire you

Do you guys get to choose witch tool you use
@jimmylive7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the fire crew. Fitness, crew needs, desired interest, personal & crew ambition/qualifications, etc.
