Twomey's grocery shop on Barrack street, Cork city is the focal point for the old working class community of Cork city's southside. Breda Twomey has been behind the counter for forty years and she is the heart and soul of the small community there. The street has seen much change in recent years, many of the older shops closing down, new people moving in from many parts of the world and bigger, shinier shops opening up that have little or no connection with the local community.
I spent an hour in Breda's shop and recorded the Christmas atmosphere as the locals drop in for a chat, people from the nearby respite home drop in for fags and a reminisce. I find the recording both humorous, heartfelt, sometimes sad but mostly surreal. Breda is the quintessence of Cork city for me, the turn of phrase, the accent, the humour and the openness.
