You could make a video on how there's a line between inspiration and copying, and some artists may cross it without even knowing it's there. When I was a younger artist, I would make OCS based on my favorite media, but they would be so similar to the original you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

My problem with the concept of "Talent" is that I think it puts both the person observing the art and the artist down. If an artist is Naturally predisposed to being good at art, why should others bother trying if they'll never be as good, and it also invalidates the artist, because if the artist is good naturally, that implies that they haven't worked hard to reach the point they are at.
@justnotterxo Жыл бұрын
THIS. THIS EXACTLY. No one comes out of the womb with talents. Can you be good at something with little effort? Yes. But does that mean you shouldn't work to improve it/haven't worked to improve it? No. Artists still work to reach the level of skill they are at. And it also makes others feel like they don't have that talent and they should just stop because they'll never be like [blank artist] which is SO NOT TRUE. Talent just kinda implies that you're just naturally good at it and aren't really putting effort into it and gives of EXTREMELY negative connotations, like it's backhanded By saying someone is just "talented" is (either unintentionally or intentionally) trying to make an artist and their followers/viewers feel bad.
@lokasen9417 Жыл бұрын

Talent is a real thing. Nobody is born able to draw a hyper realistic portrait for sure, but for example if someone's hands shake they're lines will be slopy, vs someone who can hold their hands very steady will have neater lines with less effort.

i had natural talent, as a 6 year old my drawings were miles ahead my classmates, however its when i began practicing anatomy and other fundamentals when people were impressed with my art, not just for my age. natural talent is real, but it very rarely makes someone an amazing artist or prodigy. talent is just a headstart, not the cause of all your skill
@molluscumlore Жыл бұрын
Yeah when it comes to skills beyond exclusively physical aspects (you could call being 7ft tall a talent for basketball but most wouldn't) it really seems more like a way of thinking. There's an intersection where it is genuinely something you can't replicate (like someone who's naturally very good at memorization excelling at academics by brute forcing tests despite never understanding anything) but tbh those are usually just crutches for the user anyway that still need to hone the basics before they can be properly taken advantage of. Like how you can make food taste different by chewing faster/slower, eating it warm/cold, separating it into different pieces, etc., there's a lot of ways to approach a new skill that don't necessarily look different outwardly but can really affect the pace at which you grow

@KatOnline Жыл бұрын
I believe it's a mix of both for some artists. For instance, I went through a lot of training and practice to get to where I am which majorily impacts my artwork. However I was also naturally born with a creative, imaginative, and inventive mind as well as the passion to draw and craft. Which does help. When people say "you're talented" I don't take it literally for it's definition. You have to also consider how the word is often used socially rather than just what a dictionary says it means. If someone thinks a person is being negative when they call them talented, that's probably a sign of insecurity and pessimism or a sign that the person just take things in face value. In most cases no one is trying to be negative when they say someone is talent. They are just trying to say the person is good at what they do and their work is impressive . In most cases people don't use talent to mean natural born gifted. Do you think in America's got talent that the competitors didn't work hard to get to their position. Absolutely not.
@BreDrawz Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I brought up the definitions to show why they’d get upset, because so many people go off the dictionary definition. But really people just mix up terms and have just gradually turned them into the same term. I think people are definitely allowed to be upset, but when told they’re talented, should take that fact into consideration. Whether the source of their annoyance is insecurity or not though, I think their feelings are still valid and are okay to express (not saying you meant it that way, just speaking generally)
@xcenex47911 ай бұрын
I think many people get upset when called “talented” because it sounds to them as if the person is implying that they didn’t put in any work. But having talent doesn’t mean being able to just magically do something well. Even if you’re talented, you still need to put in the work to get better, though you might be able to do so faster and more easily. I’ve never heard the word “talented” used in a negative context and I doubt people mean anything bad by saying it. I’ve caught myself getting upset a bunch of times when my mother said I was talented.. But I’ve gotten over it now, as I know she is simply trying to say she’s impressed. I might not be that good of an artist anyways, but I guess someone who can’t draw at all looks at it differently. In general people should simply chill

I wish people on tiktok, specifically ones who want to do art, could hone their inner desire for drama and take up performing arts. It's a great and rewarding form of art, and it's entertaining to both watch and participate in. I would know that I was terrified of stages until I ate my fear and signed up to do it in high school. I promise that it's a far healthier way to vent than whatever the hell this is. (Drama kids, help me out here lol)

One thing about the "I've been practicing for 6 years and I haven't improved" Is a mindset I always and think will forever have. The thing is, you have improved, but it's been gradual so you haven't noticed. Put recent work beside that old work, and it'll be obvious how far you've come!
@tammybauer7804 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, like I understand how it could be annoying for someone not to take your compliment, especially if your intent was good. However just because you had good intentions doesn’t mean that person has to like what you said to them. Moreover I see people saying that artists should just say “thank you” instead of complaining, which is weird to me because out of the millions of ways you can complement someone you still choose the adjective “talented”. Its not that hard to come up with a different compliment for someone or to listen to what they want to hear. Especially if you like their artwork. Regardless I think this drama is pointless and doesn’t really matter lmao.

im in my 30s. and i am not on tiktok. But whenever i watch any art community commentary vid about something going on at tiktok, it is always the same stuff that i experienced on places like deviantart in the mid to late 00s lol. Nothing really is new under the sun huh? But also, as someone who has seen this discourse several times through my two decades online; ppl will always call you talented. Or they will say wayyyy worse stuff like “you’re so good it makes me wanna quit drawing” or other self-deprecating “compliments” (which, if it hasnt been a tiktok topic already, it absolutely will pop up sooner or later). The best way to handle it is to just accept that non-artists just don’t know any better. And a lot of ppl think talent and skill are the same thing. Find a healthy art community outside of tiktok where you can vent out your frustration with your peers without having to worry about it going viral. That way you don’t end up arguing with random ppl in the comment section of your tiktok vids. We artists will recieve a lot of ignorant comments through our lives, and you will learn to just brush them off as time goes by. Turn off notifications, mute your posts etc if things get too overwhelming. And remember that these discourses are not new and there are lots of older artists who can share their experiences to you.

Art is subjective, the people around you not liking it doesn’t make it bad or that you lack the “talent you need”, it’s just not the style for the people around you. If you’ve been practicing, it’s a skill. The talent in art is things like creativity or fast-learning, both are talents that can be applied to skill. Once you practice it becomes a skill. Im not trying to tell you what to do, but try not to tell yourself things like that. It’s a harmful barrier in your art journey. I bet your art is beautiful and if I were to see it i know id love it. I have met some people who thought i was born (? somehow) with this skill/talent, and they say like “oh your genes are so good” or something in the lines of that, and then most of the time my answer is to explain them (NICELY) that drawing is a skill, and even if it were a gene and i wasn’t aware of it, i definitely didn’t have it (and them proceed to show a drawing that i did like 4 years ago (i REALLY improved in 4 years)

Sorry I'm VERY late to this discussion but I'll comment anyways because yes. I was there when this first happened, and I'll admit that these videos REALLY put me off and gave off an energy that I wasn't crazy about at the time. (Of course, I kept those thoughts to myself and never went after anyone.) One thing I do appreciate you mentioning that a lot of other people don't talk about in this discussion is how definitions *do* change over time. Not on paper, but socially. Because while the dictionary definition of 'talent' means it's natural, that's not the way it's typically used nowadays. When many people say talented, they *do* genuinely mean it as just you being really good at something. For a lot of people, the 'natural' part of the definition truly has just dropped off. Which is why I can see both sides. On one hand, it's good to be mindful of the words we use and how they can be interpreted differently. What might feel like an innocent compliment to one could feel to another like it's downplaying a lot of their hard work. But on the other, it's also good to pay attention to someone's intent. While some say stuff like 'omg you're so talented I'll never be like you 😭😭' and it's pretty freakin' annoying, a lot genuinely just mean it as you being good. I can really appreciate a nuanced take like this instead of what everyone else seems to say about it with either one side being fully right and one side being fully wrong. 😓

I can understand how it can sound entitled tho bc the character who sings it is a villain who doesn't care about being gentle, so she talks and uses terms that can sound rude and entitled.

I honestly hate it when artists get mad about being called talented. You know they just mean your good at it. Why are you purposely misunderstanding someone's words in order to get mad at them? Its really annoying
@BreDrawz Жыл бұрын
a lot of people aren't purposely misunderstanding, some people just end up taking it that way not realizing it's just a simple mix up of words. i dont think they genuinely get mad at people, but just find it annoying which is valid. although, this depends on the person because i wouldn't doubt some people are aware of the possibility of a mixup and get mad, which in that case... just why?...
@hosannanoctifer Жыл бұрын
the annoyance, to me, comes from the assertion by the person giving the compliment that they are somehow "untalented" and therefore won't work for the skill. I'm not better than someone else because 4 years ago I decided to teach myself how to draw! If some of these people spent as much time letting themselves try art as they do pitying themselves in a random artist's comment section, they'd be pretty damn good already 😿 like it doesn't matter if it takes you years to learn, that time will pass anyway.

Whenever I feel down about my art, and think that I haven't really improved, I take one of my old pieces and put it next to my most recent piece and I look at them like wow there's some differences. I think it honestly is a good practice to do because you can kind of be like wait I did improve. It kind of opens up your eyes a little because when you're stuck staring at the same thing over and over again, you kind of miss some things

It made me so upset how when we’d watch drawing tutorials in elementary school, the kids would say “I could never draw like that” or “They’re so much better at drawing than me” because anyone can be good at art, as long as they practice and work hard. Nobody’s born with talent after all.

7:24 for anyone who needs to hear this: you aren’t getting better because you aren’t trying new things and you’re only trying to fit into one niche category of art you really want to do, try what good at first and then challenge yourself. First you need a reference and a lot of patience to figure out the base shapes, if it doesn’t look good, don’t go for a tutorial because those almost never work and you’re just gonna be confusing yourself by trying to do it exactly like them when you should be finding your own style. Another tip is don’t immediately try to shade like it’s 3-D, try flat colors first or even just sketches, maybe your art style is sketches and you just can’t do line art, maybe you need to do traditional art sketch, and then transfer it to digital. You aren’t not good because you weren’t born with natural talent, you have complete capability to draw like a van Gogh but you are limiting yourself with art tutorials and all that bull crap, if if you really have to use it tutorial only do the base shapes at the beginning before the sketch and then do whatever you need to do.

The comments of the video you shown around 2min are so entitled, "just take the compliment" "it doesn't take much to say thank you", well I do agree and learning to accept compliments is a good thing, no one should be obligated to accept a compliment. You compliment someone because you like something about them, not expecting something in return. Those comments sounds like someone forcefully putting a gift into your hands and asking you to thank them

I'm the kind of person who grows a gastric ulcer every time someone tells me I'm "talented" or "have talent", and tbh when that happens AFK I usually sigh, thank the person for caring about my work, and then proceed to tell them I've been practicing a lot. Because well, even if I believed talent existed in the first place (which I don't), I'm still adamant that people should admit that practice and adequate equipment are the two things that get someone towards technical excellence. Also you guys have a semantics issue in English with the word "synonym". In French we use two different words for "similar meaning" (proxémie) and "identical meaning" (synonyme), because both are two very different things and two words with an identical meaning can be used interchangeably while two words with similar meanings will be used differently depending on which specific one fits the context. The result of 3k hours of practice isn't a "natural ability", and a "natural ability" doesn't allow someone to skip those 3k hours of practice and studies have observed that regardless of natural ability at first, people with lots of adequate practice on the same thing will have the same level of mastery regardless of how easy the beginning was for them and people with "a natural ability" won't get any better with just time and no practice, so it's all 100% skill. 😐

I saw a really good point someone made once, being able to draw isn't the skill artists are actually born with, its the innate creativity that can drive artists, their imagination is the born talent not the drawing itself.

7:00 i will let you know that when I started on art it was literal sonic characters with stick arms that looked like a 6 year old drew it. Now, 6 years later after full COMMITMENT it is much better, and I'm very proud of it. it takes training to get good at art, and sure it could come to people easier than others but it still needs to be trained and practiced. I mean it took me 6 years and my friend 2 years to get better.

Although complimenting artists by saying they have talent is _okay.._ for me personally, the only reason why I *hate* receiving this compliment is because they always follow up with "I can barely draw this!", "I can barely draw that!", it's ANNOYING. and even if I tolerate it, when I respond with "Oh, that's cause it took me years to build up this skill, but you can do it too!", most of the people I talk to say "Nah, I'll never do that. I can barely even draw (thing), there's no way I can do this." LIKE THAT LITERALLY DISMISSES WHAT I JUST SAID???

When it comes to drawing, I have both talent and skill in some amount (can't say that without sounding like a narcissist :/ ). From the age of 2, I would draw using real life and cartoons as reference. They were bad, but not bad for my age. I drew a LOT growing up before taking a hiatus in my teen years. All of it was self-taught with my imagination and real life as my only references besides some half-remembered lessons here and there from art teachers. This made me better than most by brute force reinforcement. However, I always ask what amount of that is from birth and what amount of it is from growing up with it? I wasn't taught by someone else, but it was literal years of training from a very young age. Now, here comes chapter two. After my hiatus, I found my drawings were not good enough for my age anymore. Whatever amount of skill/talent I got from my brute force learning had run out. So, I began actively studying techniques and training my mechanical skills more intently. This did yield results, and though they're not comparable to masters or veteran professionals, I'm more than a hobbyist now. I love all my works, even the ones that make me cringe. But, the ones that came after my active choice to study art are the works I'm most proud of. The ones that I knew were more than just talent. The ones that were without a doubt only possible through skill. I love any compliment to my work, I'm an artist, literally my entire existence is trying to make people like my dumb little creations. But, I must admit, it would be nice to hear more people call it skill and not just talent. However, we all are in some amount a product of both nature *AND* nurture. If someone compliments you on the grounds of either, just take it and know they mean well. If someone specifically says "natural" or implies your results are devoid of effort, I can understand being insulted.

ruby glooooooooom!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah, people mistook the trend as a way to say "they don't get that it took HOURS to draw" instead of "thank you! though, i don't like being called talented, maybe say you have great skills?"
@palizerart6846 Жыл бұрын
i can kina agree with this. But sometimes people dismiss talent so much i have to wonder, what is talent then? because no baby borns with the ability to sing or write or draw. everything has to be learn, so yes, learned skill is importat. BUT. there are some people no metter how much time and effort they put into something just can't get to their desired level, or just lack that spark that separates them from good to great, because they are NOT talented. Every time i hear this ergument is just have this iffy feeling about it. I can 100% get behind these artist's frustration, and feeling like some people discredit the work they put in. That art is not just purely talent, and talent and skill go hand in hand. So, this comment is not about dismissing these artist's frustration, as a fellow artists who spent years learning, who now goes to an art university, i can get it. I just feel like it begs the question WHAT is talent then. Maybe i am the one reading into this too much, and it's not this deep. But people clearly feel invalidated over this compliment, so i think we should look into how people think talent works, and not just the dictionary meaning. Because i think this is the reason this whole argument exists. i would personally define talent as a natural draw to do and acomplish something in a specific feild. most peole i know outside of art school stopped drawing in elementary, clearly they didn't even feel the need to want to learn it. I saw them be bored and even frustrated they had to attend art class in elementary and high school. I think this is where talent begins. so yeah. this is kindas long but ever since i learned about this drama i was thinking about this. i think every person has their owpersonal definition of talent, and they not necesserly mix is with skill. but lot of the time that could be the case.
@BreDrawz Жыл бұрын
this was interesting and definitely made me stop and think, but i think talents don't always fall under the category of hobbies, like many believe, most talents are traits people are born with since those count as a natural ability. like some people can be born with the ability of a curious mindset, which can lead to someone acquiring the skill of becoming a scientist or another field that is linked with curiosity, with training. or someone born with the ability to be very observant, which can be a stepping stone into acquiring the skill of art. i think most people think it's only referring to physical things, but talents can also be mental strengths. i think talents as a whole are simply a strength an individual has that can lead to them developing skills that match their strengths. your analysis of this aspect of the situation was very interesting, thank you so much for sharing because i enjoyed reading and thinking on your questions & thoughts!!
@palizerart6846 Жыл бұрын
yes, i compleatly agree with you, i just couldn't really artuculate opninion fully. English is not my first language so that is a barrier as well. But i never meant to imply talent is only a hobby or specific thing. If you think about it, very talented people usually are very skilled in many different overlapping areas (or in some cases fields that don't seem to have an overlap). For axemple musicians who are amazing visual artists or good at maths. music is build on manths. Scientists working in many fields. Or simply look at the polyhystors of the renesance. this is kinda why i made this commant. to try and dive deeper into what talent is because some people really flatten de definition and look at it ina surface level way. and i think this is ehy this whole drama comes from. not the immediate reason but the root cause. @@BreDrawz

We like the billboard now?” Or what he said and it made me think of how girls in my school said my art was ugly and then by them complementing it they’d be saying something completely different,
@dirtybaggage178211 ай бұрын
on the talent thing i do have to say i personally believe people can naturally mesh with certain fields or subjects better than others. i've seen people who worked their asses of trying to improve their art but it doesn't click with them, and their art still needs about as much improvement as when they first started. on the other hand i've seen people who've hardly ever drawn pick up a pencil, and comprehend the basics within a few weeks. it can be the same with anything, math, history, science, engineering, etc. some people naturally adapt to a thing very quickly where others can't, and need varying more degrees of study in comparison. that's "talent" imo. THAT BEING SAID.. how people normally use the word can be obnoxious, specifically when it's used as self-deprecation. i grew up with enough of that bs from my mom, i don't have the patients for it from randos. if you want to self-deprecate don't drag others into it.

My personal opinion, the artist have a valid reason to be upset about getting told they have natural talent, and don’t deserve hate on them and/or their art. But, instead of making a big deal about it we should further educate those who are un aware that it is offensive and meant it to be a compliment.
