At 3:03 You asked why only plates on one colony and only drones on the other. I don't know for sure but I think its because Alates and drones don't get their own food. And that means they don't do much for the colony so they produce less so they take up less food and the other colony with the drones can mate with the colony with drones. Ty for reading this :D

@@TheAntKeeperactually its an evolutionary tactic where one colony would ONLY produce one type of alate. Its to discourage inbreeding, as inbreeding is catastrophic. Hope this helps!
@FullmetalAngyl
@FullmetalAngyl Жыл бұрын
This is a wonderful experiment. I think there's a fertile queen for every drone if not more since I don't know if drones mate more than once. Next time you do this try a separate group of more queens than drones. Maybe 1 drone and 6 "princesses". Possibly even setting up a time-lapse to try catch a male mating with multiple females. As far as surviving goes, a lot of queens get eaten and this takes survival of the fittest out of the equation so who knows where this could lead. It would be interesting if in the far future we have domesticated ants that can only survive with human aid and present no invasion risk. It's a very young hobby so who knows what's on the horizon.
@TheAntKeeper

Interesting concept. You're right, there is so much more to discover in this hobby. Personally I find that so exciting!

@@TheAntKeeper Odd thought, what about placing a bunch of little hides? Could be clear with the red film so it'll feel dark to them but you'll be able to see them. Then as the ants mate off the queens can go hide in their own little crevice out of the bright lights. To reduce stress. Also stress might have caused her to pop out those eggs a little early so I'm not surprised that she had eggs under less than ideal conditions. It's like humans. I would possibly be trying to find a way to reduce the stress of the situation since stress might also be affecting their attempts to mate.

You may have realised this but if you got the two original colonies close together, then there is an increased chance of inbreeding between the drones and queens shown, which may or may not hamper fertility when they attempt to found a colony.

Just a small correction: Fertile is an ant (or an organism) that is capable of reproduction (ie laying eggs). Which usually queens and workers are capable of. Some of them might be infertile, their reproductive organs don't work and they die soon (in case of queens and males probably as well). What you are actually talking about is if the queens are fertilised or unfertilised by the males = if they mated and have sperm in their spermathecae (sperm sack) or not
@TheAntKeeper

Thank you for the correction. Your exactly right!

Hours and hours for a single queen!?!? Outside my work, there are thousands of delates each day for the last two weeks. Nothing special, really, just pavement ants. We just had a flight of what i believe are Ancorn ants all around my neighborhood. I must have saved a few hundred from my kids' pool. I have set out a few hundred shelled and cleaned out wallnuts and glued back together to try to get some new colonies going. But it will be a couple of months before i check them to see if any became homes for new colonies.
