-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

Hi Carson, interesting video on the AI process. At least if the AI process is not successful, it doesn't cost you any more money to have your bulls do it naturally. Happy belated Mother's Day to Damaris.

Happy Belated Mothers Day to Demaras and your Mother, GrandMother. He is a nice looking bull. One of the Select Sires locations is just up the road from were I lived years ago. A little western town, the only Westby in the world. Hope you all stay safe and healthy. You are over 29.3K subs now soon over 30K, so glad to see your channel growing.

Looks familiar, we are in middle of breeding 130 head just like you guys are. My dad likes to pair up certain bulls to certain females based on epd's so it takes a bit more paper work an people. Glad you are getting some rain, it's been dry here this spring.

They are Angus, about 20-40% do not catch on the first AI and they use bulls for after that. Carson is really good at answering question but good they are growing to almost 30K subscribers and he may not answer right away. No one will say a question is bad, ask any questions Carson has said he wants to help people understand Ranching.

Great job with the AI. We have gone to nearly all natural service on our operation, the AI is a tremendous amount of work. Our herd bulls come from SAV, OCC, and Sinclair, along with our own home grown bulls from AI. Most of the AI we do these days is to sexed semen sires so as to get females, and avoid dystocia. Great herd bulls love their job and nearly always get it done in the window of time.

Would it have been beneficial to breed the heifers at a slightly older age? They are small and have some growing to do still. Their first calf can be a real challenge with a small frame.
@badgerpa9
@badgerpa9 Жыл бұрын
They will go from about 7-800 pounds to 12-1300 pounds before calving in January/February. Just an estimate from our angus cross we had. They are ready to calve by 2 years old. They are pretty much grown by 2 years old. Bulls will keep growing much more than a heifer/cow will.

I'm a little confused, We had a small dairy , We used artificial breeding and I don't remember having any escapes. All calved after thanks giving and were usually done by Christmas. We didn't have a bull on the farm, This was in the 60's and 70's . We probably had a few out of sync I know dad sold heifers he didn't need for replacements.

Do you ever use sexed semen for breeding? Many of the large dairies here in MN breed for either replacement heifers or beef breed bull calves.

@badgerpa9

The guys that lead the bull to the steer they use have a harder job, the bull knows what is going on and they spray the steer to smell like a cow in heat, so Mr. Bull is happy, eager and hard to lead.
