We ended up with endler/guppy hybrids quite by accident . A happy accident it turns out! We had pairs of fancy guppies when my sister took pity on some feeder fish and bought them for one of her little tanks. Where upon she gave me a tiny male Endler, quite nondescript. Imagine my Surprise when this big fancy female guppy had babies that looked fancy, but quite clearly had the tiny fluorescent colored spots, indicative of the Endler's. There started our obsession! We noticed these hybrids seemed much heartier than the fancy guppies and we seldom lost any in transfer. Many of them had long trailing top fins that look like scarves, or tiny little swords on their back fine that look like a sword tail! The fun never stops! (word of warning I don't recommend buying feeder fish as they can carry disease, so proceed with caution) The good news is now we see Endlers in our LFS! Have fun and I will caution you its addictive !

I've seen all these behaviours in my own fish but have never been able to get good video of it. So this was terrific to see and very well done. Nice to learn the proper term for their mating dance. I have one hybrid male with an exceptionally long dorsal fin, shaped not unlike a college sport pennant. When he's doing the dance, his dorsal fin gets left behind by his fast moves, ends up perpendicular to his body. It rather looks as though he is flying a flag :-).

This is an amazing video, great work (of art;-) !! Do you know, if endler's and guppys display differently, Dave? I am asking because I just purchased a flock of Japan Blue Wild Guppys, and I wonder if I can detect Endler's blood in their behavior.. males are bigger than Endler's and have a long colored dorsal fin, maybe you know this straint. Greetings from Germany Thorsten

Hola! two quick questions! What do you feed your fry? also how long do you keep them separated from the big ones? I have a guppy thank with some monk fishes and some of them are looking pregnant so yeah. :C
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 жыл бұрын
In the beginning ( first week ) I feed my fry baby brine shrimp, microworms, and finely crushed flake food for maximum growth. Once they are beyond the 1-2 week mark just a diet of finely crushed flake food is fine. Clean water is more important ! How long to keep them apart from the parents really depends on your intentions. If you want maximum growth, don't put them back in with their parents because eventually the tank will become too crowded and it will stunt the growth of the fry. However, if the tank offers lots of hiding places and the parents can't catch and eat the fry then you can reunite them after a couple weeks. Monk fish ??? Salt water ???

The Dave sorry I may have translated it wrong, I speak Spanish so I don't know if the fish has the same name, I googled it and the scientific name is Gymnocorymbus ternetzi.
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 жыл бұрын
Hola, I wish I knew spanish. . . . Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is a black skirt tetra. They are an egg-laying fish that scatter their eggs around the tank. The adults need to be removed or they will eat the eggs. Some people put marbles on the bottom of the tank to keep the parents from getting at the eggs and eating them. The eggs hatch in about 24 hours. The babies are very small and will need to be fed with a commercial liquid fry food when they first hatch. After about 1 week they can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp. It is not an easy fish to breed, but it does not mean you should not try. I hope that this answer helps you.

Nice! May I ask about the cross you've made, is it reticulata male to wingei female? Reason for asking is me also about to make the cross, but I don't like the (often huge) black markings that usually comes with the endlers.
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching my video. The cross was made using male ( P. wingei ) and female ( P. reticulata ). Those black markings on the wingei ( at least in the case of Black Bar Endlers) are where they get their name. There are other P.Wingei variants that have far less black on them though, if that is what you are after. The males are quite variable in their coloration, so you could always select for offspring with less black on them.

The Dave Thank you. I have el silverado and another more black variant (campoma #6), my idea is to cross an el silverado female (would be more correct to call her la silverada) to a wienna emerald male. I'm not sure they turn out as nice as yours though.

Hi, thank you for another beautiful video! I have a question: I put 3(started with 4) feeder guppies in a 2 gallon nano tank. I pick the most colorful ones in hopes that they would be all male. One of them is constantly chasing this particular one. The one being chased is slightly, bigger, not quite as colorful. They go nose to nose sometimes. It sometimes chases the one back. Could this be their mating dance. The one being chased I've noticed bends its tail and swims funny, backwards or around and around. I'm thinking I need to separate them. But if it's a mating thing I won't. Thanks!!
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 жыл бұрын
Female usually don't have much color at all. Males will sometimes display for each other, but it sounds to me like the less colorful and larger fish being chased is probably a female. Females will occasionally chase the male pursuer. If it is a female she will only have color on her tail fin. It sounds like you are describing a mating dance.

Decorations will not scare the fish. They have evolved to live with some pretty scary things in the wild. Keeping the water clean is of greater importance. Btw, what is the nature of your science fair project ? I do have one concern, Endler Livebearers (Poecilia wingei) are smaller fish than the common Guppy (Poecilia reticulata ). So, my concern is this; a small Endler female may have trouble giving birth to the slightly larger offspring of a common Guppy. This size difference may give a small / immature female trouble. However, if the Endler female is of a mature age (thus larger) it will not be a problem. You may want to watch my video on the Black Bar Endler. It may help you learn more about this wonderful fish. Here is the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GUqqV4i8t3mNk
@TheSuperSquad
@TheSuperSquad 8 жыл бұрын
The Dave The nature is to see if two different fish (It specifically said Guppy and Livebearer endler) are able to breed successfully and make a hybrid and if the hybrid fish can mate and give birth as well. The Endlers I am getting will be mature when I go to breed them thus they will be larger. Im also buying water filters that wont suck up the fish and im going to buy one of those vacuums that clean the water as well.

My male endler behave just like this with my Normans lampeye...... Love watching them... At 1st I thought they don't get on... But I was wrong.. They can all sleep together above the filter and nobody gets hurt... I've mixed these with cherry barbs, corydoras, khuli loaches, bristlenose pleko, rainbow fish, scissortail, normans lampeye.... Thank you for watching my video. The ADFs come out whenever I feed the Endlers. They will actually come to the surface to take flake food, however they are quickly outpaced by the fish ! So, I drop sinking cichlid pellets right in front of the ADFs noses whenever I see them. I pretty much have to hand-feed them ! That tank in the video is not an ideal setup for ADFs, but it worked for a while because of the hand-feeding. It's too tall and the special feeding is a bit of a chore ! So, I have moved them to their own tank. I hope to make a video about ADFs in the near future.

What parental strains were present here? I've gotten into breeding guppy endler hybrids, and I am curious to know! The aim of my project is to get an exceptionally robust (health-wise) but tiny fish that can live peacefully with baby shrimp. It's going pretty well, only a few generations in. Any ways, I would love to know what parental phenotypes were used for these!
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 4 жыл бұрын
Hello again! I began hybridizing guppies / endlers because I acquired 3 or 4 male pure bred Black Bar Endlers, and the breeder would not sell me any of his endler females!!! . So, I crossed the pure bred endler males with random female guppies. The variety of phenotypes that came from these crosses were all over the place. Many were incredibly beautiful! Unfortunately I don't known the exact strains that were used on the guppy side of things. So, I can't give you specifics. I'll be doing more work with guppy / endler hybrids in the near furture. I can't wait. . . . Such incredible fish!!!
@VyvienneEaux
@VyvienneEaux 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheDave333 Yes, the reluctance to sell female endlers is a real problem I've encountered a lot, as well. I originally acquired two females that I believe to have been N-class endlers from the Campoma region (due to the reputation of the store and the males they were kept with, which clearly showed the Campoma phenotype), but I managed to kill both of them during midterms my last semester of college because they both had a hard time giving birth and I wasn't around to nurse them back to health. The fry were all males. After that, I never got my hands on definitive female endlers again, as my karmic punishment. I did get two females of a guppy-endler hybrid strain (but too much on the guppy side, I think) and later two small females appearing to be wild type guppies (but sold to me as Endlers). So that's what I'm using now. I'm very envious of you for your Campoma endlers. Unfortunately Rob this a large community of endler / guppy hybrids, so it would be difficult to tell who is who. All of the adults seen in this video have passed since its creation. However, you could create your own hybrids by mixing Endlers with random female guppies as I have done here. It's actually very fun. The variety of fish that come out of these hybridizations is amazing. If you do decide to get some N-Class endlers to hybridize with guppies, be sure to keep a portion of the N-class fish untainted by the guppy genetics. Some folks, with good reason, are very against the hybridization of Endlers. Be sure to watch my video on The Black Bar Endler for more information. Thanks for watching my video.

@TheDave333
@TheDave333 8 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you mean by "not lasting". As far as life expectancy goes, that has not been my experience with the guppy / endler hybrids. It may be for other fish hybrids, but not these guys. In fact, they exhibit what is known as hybrid vigor ( they live longer and produce more offspring). My hybrids are actually much healthier than the inbred fancy guppies that you see in pet stores. If, on the other hand, by " not lasting" you mean that they don't breed true, then what you have read is correct. Their offspring will not come out as carbon copies of the parents unless the line is fixed through many years of line-breeding. So, it depends on what you mean. If you would like to try breeding a purebred variety then the best place to get them is in Florida at www.swampriveraquatics.com Good luck and thank you for watching my video.

Are her scales "pine coning"? Dropsy will make her fat and bloated, very hard to cure. If I remember correctly, they should have bred successfully in the past. . . If yes, then what as changed since then? Is there still a suitable cave for them to spawn in? Did you change the cave type or location? If you did, then the male might not like the new site. Give them more than one option. That's all that I can think of at the moment. Keep me informed and best of luck.

2-3 females per male, a thickly planted tank with lots of java moss, use sponge filters so the baies are not harmed. Do regular water changes. Make sure that the females are large enough to breed with the males. (Endlers tend to be smaller than fancy guppies.) If you are hybridizing, It's better to breed male Endlers with female fancy guppies.

It's really a matter of size. Since Endlers are smaller fish than guppies. A small female endler carrying larger than usual guppy embryos may have trouble in "childbirth." It's not that it can't be done. It's just about the size or each fish. Large endler females have no trouble carrying to term a large clutch of guppy /endler babies.

Any new fish that you add to the aquarium could be a carrier of of parasites and disease. So, it's very important to quarantine all new fish for 2-3 weeks to make sure they're healthy before adding them to the main tank. Luckily, there are also several treatments that can be given to them while in quarantine to kill any parasites. " General Cure" is a good all around preventative treatment. Guppies are great fish, but they are often mistreated and sick, but it's easily fixed with a little love. .

I must ask, what species is the male parent and what species is the female parent? These hybrids seem to have inherited predominately endler features, the only things they seem to have inherited from the guppy parent is some small patches of colouration on the rear end of the body, the fin on the top-centre of the body, the larger size and the mating behaviour, everything else seems to be endler. Let me guess, the endler parent was male, because if I recall correctly the male guppies pass down more of their physical features and colouration than the females, and I'm guessing the same is true in endlers. Even if it isn't, this genetic passiveness of female guppies would hypothetically still occur in hybridisation if it isn't the male guppies' genes that are stronger.
@TheDave333
@TheDave333 7 жыл бұрын
The original male parents were endlers ( 4 boys ), the breeder wouldn't sell any of his females ! So, this is why I had to hybridize in the first place ! The female(s) were just random guppies that were big and healthy. And yes, the females are fairly genetically passive as far as the coloration and patterning goes. The offspring are definitely more endler than guppy. You know your fish ! Very nice !

How do you know it's a female
@TheDave333

Females will usually show what is known as a gravid spot. The gravid spot is caused, in part, by black pigments on the ovarian sac. Females will not have a gonopodium and they are also not very colorful.

Are there even female Lyretails? I'm beginning to think there aren't. Lol

Genetically speaking yes, but only the males display the typical lyretail. Phylogeny ( DNA) vs. morphology (outward appearance). Sorry the geek in me just creeps out sometimes!

i think they like the attention. the males are quite chivalrous, if they get too pushy, the female will get annoyed and leave.
