Fantastic video! I have started breeding rabbits in a rabbit colony environment on 5 acres here in the US. Out of all the videos I have watched to learn about breeding rabbits yours was by far the most informative and to the point. You covered the main topics very nicely and in a way that is easy for people to understand. Great video!

Dexter's World a good tip I would like to share is what to do if your doe is building her nest outside the nesting box. I've had this happen a few times, especially with 1st time mothers. When you put the nesting box in the cage, usually at 28 days after the breeding, I look to see what corner the rabbit is using as the bathroom the LEAST amount & I put the box in that corner. I observe the doe over the next few days and pay attention to see if she actually begins to prepare her nest in the box or if she is removing bedding and taking it to a different corner of her cage. If she is then I will move the nesting box to the corner she's building in. That will often solve the problem. If using bowls for water, be careful because sometimes a baby will somehow end up drowned ☹ To avoid this I will switch to water bottle or affix a plastic water cup to wire at least 3-4 inches above cage bottom. Last helpful hint, ALWAYS ALWAYS write down date you bred your rabbit. Also, even if you suspect your doe didn't successfully conceive go ahead and put a nest box in and don't remove until day 36 after breeding. I have been fooled a few times thinking a doe didn't get pregnant so I didn't put nest box in and walked in to dead babies on floor of cage. If you find cold babies you may try warming them up as this will sometimes revive them, but usually they pass away once exposed. Thank you
@jocobrat
@jocobrat 6 жыл бұрын
Sunsila Kafle if you are talking about nesting box you should be able to find a video on KZbin. Sometimes a nesting box can be as simple as a cardboard box with top open, an area for mother to jump in that is about 10 cm from bottom of cage. It's important to give the mother good nesting material. I personally use recycled paper bedding that is often used for hamsters or Aspen tree shavings for a bottom base then pile on a good layer of nice hay or clean dried grass for next layer of nesting material adding more as needed. The mother rabbit should pluck her own fur to line her nest and keep her babies warm. She often won't pull her fur until right when giving birth or immediately after. Skme rabbits like to make their nest a week or earlier even! Every rabbit is different. When the babies are about 10-12 days old and their eyes are just opening I will remove all old bedding & replace with fresh to prevent eye infections. I will then completely remove nesting box once the babies are eating well and can access their food pellets and water quite easily. Make sure at about 20 days old that the babies can access fresh drinking water because lack of water can often lead to surprising death.

a perfect case of quantity over quality. as a rabbit breeder, i didn't see a single rabbit i would purchase from this farm. Dexter has a lot to learn about producing quality animals. which is ok because he is new. whats troubling is that Dexter is educating the world of poor practices.

Scott Mac sorry it has been 6 months. I am just now seeing this. I live in USA & raise rabbits. That's very interesting to hear your view and personal experience raising rabbits in Australia. I've heard horror stories about different diseases that can knock out huge rabbitries in just a couple of days. Knock on wood...I feel pretty lucky. Really the only disease or illness we usually have to deal with here in states with our domesticated rabbits is snuffles (respiratory illness) I have lost literally hundreds and hundreds of beautiful show &/or meat rabbits because this illness is so rampant here. Take care & good luck hunting!

Just a thought, but I noticed when i was in Canberra last year there were rabbits everywhere, maybe you could trap a few of the wild rabbits which seem to be immune to the calici virus. the current strains of the virus were released in canberra 2015 and 2017 and cross breed larger domestic rabbits with the wild rabbits to give your breeding stock natural immunity. We stayed at the Ibis Styles "resort" just on the ACT NSW boarder and there were at least 100 rabbits mowing their front lawn for them. So i would say the current strains of the virus have little to no effect on wild rabbits now. Given rabbits go though a "generation" every 30 days or so it makes sense they would quickly outgrow a virus which can take months or years to mutate if it ever does

We bred at six months, taking the female to the male. I rebreed at 15 days and weaned at 30 days. I left one kit on the doe when I removed the litter. After a day I removed the last single bunny. I did that to avoid caked utter. Water is important. I bred just one time, observing the mailing. I tried to breed two rabbits each day. I fostered the bunnies among the two does. After eight each doe, I gave the rest to the dogs. Eight was the break even point. We did things differently, but we both did well. The important thing is to get a good line of rabbits, done through selection. Selection is very important. God bless! Padre+

One tip with breeding: Always put doe in males cage and bring her back to her cage after breeding process. Sometimes, females chop off males testicles making him sterile for future reproduction. Also, separation of rabbits to individual cages is very important because females can do the same to other male rabbits and sterilize them. When you have more then one fertile does in 1 cage, only one will reproduce and others wont, that is also the reason to store them separately.

Carrying the rabbit by the scruff of its neck is actually the safest way for the human, as well as the rabbit. That way if it starts kicking it will not scratch or bite the human and is less likely to be dropped. As a New Zealand White Rabbit breeder myself, I've learned the hard way.
