hi love videos im after some advice i have a pair of red billed fire finches they have had 3 rounds of eggs where only 1 has been fertile.i feed millet spray varities of finch food egg food and shells and dried meal worms, they also have cuttlefish and iodine block.is it lack of protein ie live food. the female will stay in nest at night incubating then they share in the day. she does not incubate from day 1 and stays out with the male could that be the problem

Hi Paul, i don’t think I can say for sure but... it is normal for them to have 4-5 eggs in clutch and to not start incubating until the last egg minus one (so on egg 3-4). It is not normal for them to both be out once incubating starts so if that happens something is not right. Perhaps they are too young? Or maybe the male and female are out of sync in the breeding cycle (you want both birds to go through molt at the same time and then a few months later build their condition at the same time, trigger molt with lighting and stop live food). My 100% guarantee food for breeding is wingless fruitflies (videos show how to deal with them). If they have tried 3 clutches, give them a break even though they did not come to anything. Frustrating for you, but they are good breeders generally so you will get it.

@@paulcotterill693 if she is going in nest, it may actually be the male that is the problem, he is supposed to relieve her (may also be the infertility issue). Do you ever see him incubating?

Dear breeder, I just purchesed a pair of greenspots , that seems not completely molted out yet , from their juvenile plumage. The one with red face is male for sure, even if he still has some green patch on the breast . The other one has orange face and much more green on its breast, along with adult sport cca 50% of the breast. Could the face color change from orange to red after this stadium ? ( Also, do I have pair for sure?)

For schlegeli sub species, Female face color can range from pale yellow to deep orange and generally the color gets richer as they age. Females do not have any orange at all on the chest. The green may have a hint of yellow overtone but if you see an orange feather in chest, then male. I am trying to remember but I think all my males molt directly into bright red mask. I can not answer for other sub species.
