Also gardening in Kansas, and having my first " homestead" garden...this year has been hard and discouraging, but I just kept going. Added new soil, fertilized and things are growing. Crossing my finger for a decent harvest. Also, growing corn the " right" way for the first time.

I highly recommend an automatic coop door! My girls go in at night before it closes and are able to come out in the morning on their own. I just pop in there during the day to collect eggs, make sure they have clean water and bedding, and give them a treat occasionally. I needed one when I went on vacation one year and it was the best thing I got. I finally got a second one so that the coop door and the run door are automated. Now the girls are on automatic pilot.

I have one! I just dont keep their run door open if Im not outside just to be safe! We have raccoons/possiums/and skunks that visit the backyard all the time and I dont want to deal with them getting in and eating their food and such.

@@itsbreellis oh ok. Those critters usually only visit me at night long after the doors close. We have one BIG skunk that likes to dig in my yard some mornings it looks like the surface of the moon with all craters it’s dug. But as I said, our door closes at sunset and those animals usually aren’t out then. Of course, I also have a dog and he does keep a lot of the animals at bay. I no longer have a groundhog problem because of him. Well, good luck with your girls and continued great success with your garden.

Hi! Out of sheer curiosity, (i don't have a backyard farm) but how did you train the chickens to go in before the door closes?

@@uselessSam They know when to go in all by themselves! As the light starts to fade, they make their way to the coop and go inside. The coop door is programmed to close 20 minutes after sunset and by then the chickens have long gone inside. When you first get your chickens and you have a coop for them, you keep them inside it for several days. That way they know that's where they live. After that, they automatically return on their own. When the door opens in the morning they come out and then as evening comes on, they had back in doors. Chickens are one of the easiest animals to keep. They really are pretty much on automatic pilot.

I read that luffa pairs well with corn for planting so I planted my corn next to my luffas. So far so good, but the luffas want to grab on to the corn!

I have the same chicken waterier and I put it on some bricks because the chickens were scratching debris into it. Kept it cleaner for longer.

This was my 2nd yr planting corn. This year my corn tasseled way before the cobs formed, so when the cobs formed they didn't get fertilized because the tassels blew away or got eaten by birds. I will try again next year and maybe have a harvest like yours. Resilience 🌽🌽

If you put a drop of mineral oil on the top of the ears of corn it will stop the worm.

Ill have to try this, carpenter ants are demolishing the tops of my popcorn and the only thing I’ve found that works is to lightly char the ends with a torch 😭

I’m in Chicago and it’s been a cooler summer. I’m concerned that many of my tomatoes won’t ripen before the first frost. I agree with you, I think we’ll have an early frost this year. Congratulations on your corn harvest!😊

Our June was very hot and dry, more like an August for us, and I know the food gardeners around me had a hard time of it. I only did bell peppers in containers, so that was easy to keep up with, but my flowers definitely suffered even though I watered frequently. Def looking forward to cooler temperatures in a month or two!

Every year I start my corn in 2” soil blocks on heat mats and have enjoyed great success - recommend you give it a try. It allows one to get an earlier start to the season and not have to wait for the warmer soil temperatures required for germination. I also put feather meal along with bone meal in the planting hole and a bit of organic garden fertilizer, usually Espoma Garden Tone or bio-tone. I live in New Hampshire (Zone 6) and we started eating our home grown super sweet variety of corn the second week of July. I also succession plant every year and my family enjoys eating it into September. I just began watching your channel in the last couple of weeks and this seasoned gardener learned a couple of things from you - thanks!

This was a fantastic year for my corn too! I had also thought about doing multiple successions, as there’s plenty of time in the season. However I found the issue isn’t time before frost, but pest activity windows. My first round was perfectly timed (by accident) to avoid pests that wanted to eat young sprouts *and* most worm damage on the cobs. But my second succession *and* the next round of seedlings after that were all eaten as they sprouted. So I’ve learned that for my own garden, whole time is a-plenty, we’ll stick to one early crop of corn followed by okra instead of a second round of corn. I hope your buggy-neighbors coordinate their feasts in your favor! Good luck!

I actually found your channel through your hair tutorial video and now I'm hooked on your gardening videos. I am in the process of building a large garden and it has taken me 3 years so far. I would say I have another 3 years to go before it's what I want it to be. One of my bigger mental hangups is finding the right way to physically plan and document my garden on paper from bed rotation to succession planning to spacing to documenting how much I've been able to harvest for future planning. I would love to see a video on how you keep your notes for your garden.

I also had a hard time with corn last year and decided it wasn’t worth attempting again. But my issue wasn’t pollination or worms, I could NOT get a handle on the aphids! They weren’t just on the outside leaves where I could wipe or spray them off with the hose, they were getting inside the immature cobs and I didn’t like peeling back the cob husks to get them and messing with the developing corn. I think a part of the issue was we had a lot of ants last year since our garden was new and the surrounding pathways were really dry and ideal for ants.. which carried the aphids up the stocks. Have you ever had aphids issues on your corn?

I had tons on the corn and eventually the ladybugs found them and took hold! I have so many ladybug larva on them atm. I dont spray anything anymore, I was worried it might have a affect but it seems to have been just fine!

I’m very surprised how little damage you had to silk worms. I’m an organic farmer and most of the farms I’ve worked for has not tried to grow corn because it’s so difficult to control the silk worms organically. We tried once and every single ear got destroyed in one night. Do you live near agricultural areas where they’re growing corn? If you’re really deep in a city/suburb that’s the only way I can imagine you got away without spraying! Either way great harvest the corn looks amazing!! 🤩

None of my onions did well, it went from flooded to drought back and forth and most of them snapped and died back giving me quarter sized bulbs. Yet the onions that sprouted in my fridge are going insane out in the garden 😂

Ive grown san marzano the last handful of years and Ive never been impressed with them either. Im no longer going to grow them. Also have had terrible luck with Amish paste. I love a traditional roma! Ive also had great luck with different hybrid romas too!
