Mr. Brendan, your video tutorials made me want to learn how to play piano and I dream of playing Boogie Woogie Stomp. You explain very well and show how to play. It's with great pleasure that we watch how you play. Thank you very much from the country of Georgia for your video lessons.

Boogie Woogie began with players just using their left hand, believe it or not. In my opinion, some of the Boogie Woogie left hand patterns sound so good on their own that you’ll probably sound better than most who play mediocre pop drivel , just by having a great walking bass.

Must tell you Dr.K, u have me TOTALLY addicted to Boogie Woogie. I was up til around 3 am last night listening. I couldn't STOP! I just kept going from video to video of your lessons, taking notes, writing down note combo's etc., trying to remember to LIKE bfore I went on. Yr lessons are SO fun, and SO inspiring. I'm really hoping to order yr course in late spring, perhaps for my birthday in May. Our CDN dollar is currently very weak. This just might b a bday present to myself, LOL. THANK YOU SO MUCH for these lessons!

The right hand is not like the one played by Ammons, but Dr K is the only one who has totally nailed the left hand, which is the soul of this piece!

Hi Mr Brendan, What a pleasure to see you playing Piano. I saw a lot of video yours, and gave me voluntee to learn boogie woogie. Unfortunatly in my Country we didn't find anybody for this style, only classical and Jazz, but never with the groove with the left hand, because it's a bass guitar which done this part. If you can show more video with slowdown different version left and right hand it will be very cool. Thank you again, you are really a very good pianist. I would like one day have the same level of game. I hope you will understand all my english.

Never touched a piano before July 2019. Before I bought the digital piano this was one of the first tutorial videos I checked out. I figured to give myself a year of acclimation before attempting to learn Boogie Woogie Stomp. Thankfully, Dr. K put out this 2 part series because I still don’t have the patience for sight reading. Gonna start practicing this Saturday Aug. 22, 2020. I’ll check back in when it’s done. I’m predicting 3 weeks just to get the tremolos nice and even and maybe another 3 weeks on top of that, fingers crossed.

@@benburch That's the problem with trying to play pieces that are too difficult for you. It's a shame. This piece is not easy. The left hand alone is already difficult in the first part and in the end it gets even more difficult with the octaves. You could've had better luck with Pinetop Smith's Boogie Woogie, for instance, since it has a *much* easier left hand and the right hand has mostly easier chords with a couple of easy scales. Instead of playing the combination of chop + inverted chop on the left hand, which Pinetop played, you could've simply played the regular chop, which Brendan also has a video teaching and that would already set you up for the right hand in a week of good practice. That's why having a teacher is also important. They know what you can or cannot play and help you set your expectations realistically, to keep you encouraged to practice.

I've watched all your videos, bought a keyboard, spent thousands of hours practicing and I can't get passed a C chord! I've now thrown the keyboard into the neighbours garden (killed their cat in the process) and decided it's more fun just watching KZbin videos of "those that can". Peace out

Dear Dr.K, It's come to my attention that you've been looking for a computer program that produces a sheet music, or something to that effect. If you still are, you can FL Studio to make music sheets on the fly. Also, you can save whatever you play as a midi file, and then display it on a midi reader ( Synthesia, for example) this way we can see exactly what notes you're playing for both the left and the right hands. Thank you for making these videos.
@DrKBoogieWoogie10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this Moamen, but you have to be a bit clearer for me. I'm a bit of a technophobe and I don't understand what you meanwhen you write "you can FL studio to make music sheets on the fly". What does this mean? Anyone?
@Moamen7710 жыл бұрын
PS: Not only you can make sheets music, but you can save your recording as a MIDI file and do whatever you want with it.
@whmozart10 жыл бұрын
Brendan Kavanagh You should definitely get into digital music recording. Sibelius is another piece of software that writes down the notes you're playing as you're playing them (obviously having a digital piano hooked onto the computer). Stop being a technophobe. It does require patience and getting used to. Some frustration level is to be expected too, but if you learned to play boogie like that you will learn to use the software in no time. Also, in today's day and age, no matter what problem you may encounter, there will be a video somewhere explaining the solution or the how to. On the side: Thank you for making these videos. I have a terrible time playing the hands independently and I can't wait to break through that... But I am having a blast learning from you! Thank you cameraperson, too! I love your shoe!

Boogie woogie obviously uses a lot of dissonance followed by consonance. The part that cracks me up is around 3:16 in the video. While the left hand hits F, the right hand plays F# and D#. OUCH! Heck, the entire bar has no shame. Who needs consonance, LOL. Makes it sound wicked and tense.
@herodog18 жыл бұрын
the left hand that I have been playing, in the key of C, leaves out the E natural on the 4th note. so instead of playing C&E I am just playing the C alone. the rest of my left hand is identical to yours. thanks again

Nice long tutorial but it really would help if you had an overhead FIXED camera in place to capture things form a steady view point. In the boogie bundles lesson seven is missing, so it makes it more difficult to be sure and you really don't want to have to unlearn it cause you didn't get it right the first time.

Terrific boogie, but we want to learn to play it! See the notes of comments by James Flashman and Max Lee. They are saying the same thing .One gave up - which is terrible - in frustration. Teach us by telling us the notes or put them up as you go please. Heuristic learning is not any good and you know how to play this stuff. Even slowing the video down one cannot get the notes. One goes round and round and round trying to get them ... Please put them up, or on a stave or say them as you play them. There are different ways to do this on You Tube. We desperately want to try and play this . Oliver
@xkhokokox7 жыл бұрын
How do you remember those notes?
@videray68128 ай бұрын
Muscle memory. It's similar to learning to walk or ride a bike, etc. After much practice, it becomes automatic without much thought. Have you ever been driving a car or riding a bike and all of a sudden wonder where you were and maybe even how you got there? Muscle memory probably got you there (scary). Many times I've been playing a piece that I've memorized and begin day dreaming. Auto pilot kicks in for a while and then all of a sudden I get stuck and can't figure out where I am in the the piece.

Playing a solid boogie like this requires the ability to maintain a regular LH beat while playing intertwined RH notes. This difficulty is even more pronounced with the music of Bach because the hands play 'irregularly'. This is a mental problem and those including me who cant play two handed Bach or Boogie will when trying will feel the brain twitch and the hands pull together in a common rhythm before collapsing in a heap. I think this problem cannot be removed by any amount of study or practice !
@francemaster7 жыл бұрын
well, clearly it can, otherwise no one would play it. Just need more practice :)
@cutlerkeys6265 жыл бұрын
If you are determined you can do it. You're right, the coordination between the hands is very random and unpredictable in boogie and at least as hard as much Bach. Break each passage down into micro units or blocks and practice repeatedly. Blocks can be 1 bar or even half bar units. Practice slowly and methodically. Practice hands separate and hands together. Be absolutely certain of the fingering and keep it consistent. Repeated practice will build up muscle memory for each small unit. Once small units solidify begin stitching blocks together 2 or 3 at a time. Do not force the tempo. Faster playing should be allowed to emerge gradually as the muscle memory builds up. Do not let your fingers run off on their own, control your dog team. Allow yourself complete pauses where needed while you call up the correct memory sequence. Try to know mentally what is coming next at each point. Slowly, over days or weeks the entire passage will begin emerge in tact. Once this begins to happen still go back and polish the small units. This type of practice is tough going but it works!
