This is so reminiscent Claudio Arrau's Beethoven interpretations in the 1950s. A truly great performance.

Really reminds me of the 2nd movement, funeral march, of the Symphony 3. It similarly starts off in the depths and climbs its way into the light.

It indeed has a funeral character. Compare it with one of Beethovens early songs, "In questa tomba obscura" WoO133, an early song in Italian, whose harmonic progression becomes a citation in this movement...🤔🤔🤔

Pity Brendel doesn't play anymore. He understands the singing quality of Beethoven which has been replaced by an exaggerated technical proficiency. Igor Levit misses the Viennese side of this music...
