About 40 years I heard this music on the TV. I tried humming it to my piano teacher so she could find it for me to play. She couldn't recognise it and I never heard it again. BUT for 40 years, the tune would some times return to my brain. Then, a few days ago, I "sang" it into google and finally identified it. Mystery solved! Except that now I'm still bugged by trying to remember what the drama was. It was a BBC thing, a drama I think.

I absolutely love hearing stories like this. One of the greatest joys in life is finding the source of a song/piece of music that you've loved for many, many years, but couldn't hear it again--until the moment of revelation. Great story; thanks for sharing.

Brendel's Schubert is the best performance that everyone recognizes. It makes Schubert look like Schubert. He plays Schubert so neatly and beautifully. The same goes for this song. His interpretation is so perfect.

The admirable thing about Brendel is that after you have heard many pianists' performances, each with their own merits and unique conceptions, you can always rely on Brendel when you want to go back to the basics - which is extremely difficult to achieve and requires the most clear-minded artistry.

he is actually one of the few pianists who misses out what Schubert wrote. He is therefore a terrible interpreter imo

Makes me wonder if any pop songwriter used that part ala Rachmaninoff 2nd or Fantasie Impromptu- certainly with the Maj 7 chords and the #5's it would be very at home in a 20th century pop song.

the showmanship thing being what it is these days, we sometimes lose sight of the emotion, sentiments, etc. that the great ones seem to build right into a composition. Brendel seems to preserve this above all.

Did anyone notice what seems to be a pedaling mistake in measures 10 to 11 (last sixteenth note in 10 to first quarter note in 11)? Second 0:36
@insignissima11 жыл бұрын
There is indeed something ; not a pedaling "mistake" (and yet I think Brendel uses the pedal too often, as far as I can hear) ; I’d rather say that he lingers a bit over the sixteenth note D ; but it’s an interesting effect, isn’t it ?

Imo, Brendel nails this piece almost to perfection. Many artists play this piece with too much flair and it sounds forced and stilted, eg. Zimmerman. Zimmerman is brilliant with Chopin but he doesn't play Schubert convincingly. This is one of Schubert's most interesting works of art and it needs almost a 19th century "Austrian" mental understanding to get right. Brendel somehow understands Schubert well enough to tap into it.
@ViceroyoftheDiptera4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Zimmerman takes rubato liberties that simply don’t fit Schubert, sometimes to the point of self-indulgence. Part what makes these pieces beautiful is that the harmonic changes, the melodies, are almost fleeting, and spending ages on certain notes kills that flow.

From 3:37-3:58 (and again from 6:49-7:10) sounds very Chopin-y (or maybe Liszt-y). Other parts remind me a little of Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude.

Very good. Brendel takes out the dynamic effects more than Zimerman. Zimerman i more interested in the ligthness. Zimerman is very good, but I think that Brendel is little better as Schubert interpretor. Their is more dramatic over Brendel.

If it's in C why are there 3 flats in the key signature?
@ruthchipperfield30617 жыл бұрын
C minor uses the key of E flat. In C minor the 7th note, B flat, is sharpened to natural, changing the interval from the E flat major pattern. It gives the slightly mournful sense to the music, in spite of its delicacy and air of sweetness.
@BeachAndSnow7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ruth, but I still don't understand why it's titled "Impromptu in C" as opposed to "Impromptu in C minor" - maybe a typo in this version of the sheet music.

C minor has three flats and the bulk of this piece is in C minor. The last part of the piece, however, is in C major and the piece ends in that key. Notice on the last page is the key signature of C major (no flats or sharps).

I think because masters like Brendel truly understand the language that is music. They are not just actively listening and playing from memory but are rather "reciting" the tonal poem that the original composer created. In modern classical teachings the emphasis lies heavily on developing technique and memory in favor of teaching relative pitch and counterpoint. The latter two skills used to be tutored for pianists and composers alike but the last century this tradition has been dying out in favor of technical display.
