It's been over six years since I recorded and posted this. I saw Brent again this year and thanked him for sharing that story. I told him how popular this video had been and how awesome it was to see everyone's comments and related stories that you've all posted. He was quick to point out that Patrick really does hate when he imitates him but insisted that I keep the video up! 😂

Compare Patrick's masterful performance to the hammy crap that William Shatner did. No comparison, which is why we can watch all the Treks after Next Gen, but the original is painful to watch.

I love hearing them over and over. The 'horseplay' of the TNG cast - particularly Spiner with the others, is great. They're so disarmingly humble ... something like that - I mean, you have a guy like Sir Patrick Stewart, serious actor with so many stage credits etc., and he just seems like such a genial nice person. And, they all have this kind of group of friends camaraderie ... this looseness - giving each other grief and all of that. It's great - seems to bring them all joy too, much like that sort of camaraderie probably many people have experienced at various times with various groups of friends (I think of my 'high school' friends, in particular). Love it!

That is super-hilarious. I'd heard Sir Patrick was kind of a snob, early on, but to hear that he loosened up _so quickly_ is really kind of heartwarming! I was on the same really long boring flight. We were both in first class and I'm the type of person that tries to respect the celebrity's privacy. If they say hi I'll say and leave it at that. The flight was a little over 11hrs long. It was around hour three of the flight that he began to do his Data. When he said, "Captain, I have found a nonbiological lifeform." Picard's voice, "is it intelligent?" Data, "Does not appear to be." that's when I broke out laughing so hard. He introduced himself to me as Brent Spiner. Perhaps you haven't heard of me. So I started to pretty much spew all the rolls he had in Star Trek and then all of his other acting gigs he had until he told me to stop which BTW I did it all in one breath. So he says to me why didn't say hey you're Data from Star Trek! I told I'm the type to respect one's privacy especially if it's a celebrity. Cause the way I see it you guys must get pestered at least a couple of dozen times a day or more if a celebrity is spotted. We chatted and he asked me if I knew how to play Chess and he calls the stewardess over and asks for a chessboard. We played and chatted right up to our destination. As I was driving home I could've bombarded him with Trek questions and he'd be more than happy to answer them but I was glad I didn't. But I'll say this his chess game is very good.

Like a deal couldn't be made to cross-promote? Star Trek was ripped in half when Paramount-Viacom split up... and reunited when Paramount-Viacom reconsolidated. Ghostbusters is spread between Sony & Columbia Pictures. You can shows produced by Paramount-Viacom end up at NBC or Fox instead of CBS or Paramount network based on who picks up options. Nothing surprises me. HBO producing a Star Trek comedy special... filmed in a theatre next to a comic-con convention... with Paramount-Viacom securing the rights for their streaming service and DVD/Blu Ray releases. If Sesame Street can exist on both HBO & PBS under that arrangement... Paramount & HBO making a quick buck on a comedy special...

Part of it also was that Patrick Stewart was used to be on the theater stage where you don't have the luxury of retakes if you screw up so it took him a while to get out of the habit of trying to be perfect first try. Reminds me of the behind the scenes on "Caddyshack" where they talk about the trouble Rodney Dangerfield was having during the first scenes he was filming since as a stand-up comedian he was so used to audience feedback that he felt like his delivery was bombing when no one around him was laughing (as they couldn't or it'd ruin the scene) and it stressed him out until he got the hang of the different environment.

I love the dynamic between stars and fans where the fans know virtually every detail of an episode, a performance, the nuance of a character, the lore of the series, etc, while the actor just considers it a small part or their career. I feel like Spiner has a good grasp on how influential he was as Data, it’s a nice departure from the norm. Like, I would be tempted to interrogate Bob and David about the production of Mr Show and they likely wouldn’t remember shit and I wouldn’t blame them. Technology has caught up with time, since making of series, and Androids are now more realistic....Data is something that will be very real in the future. Brent plays Data well.
@gr3ygh05t95 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the tech we have and will have is coming from Roddenberry's vision of the future. There has most definitely been advances in robotics and artificial intelligence but it hasn't stopped there. There was also Trump's announcement of the creation of Space Force, which I believe will eventually evolve into an organization like The United Federation Of Planets. Warp drive is even being tinkered with and they already have a design for the first warp capable ship. I've even heard (but been unable to find any news on it) that they're working on transporter technology so the Star Trek world will become a reality. I just hope it happens in my lifetime, but I doubt it.

Well, if they ever decide to do "Star Trek: TNG" , but have to recast the show like they did with Kirk, Spock and the others, they will still have the chance of recasting Brent Spiner as Captain Picard. He'll sound and even look the same.

I just realised that an Early forties Brent would have been a good Holmes, despite being a yank (yes, I know, Data played Holmes, but he was in yellow make up, in a wig,playing an android). Oh my God, I just got to the impression (around the 4:00 Mark), that is way better than I expected. They should have snuck that into the show, like have had Data mimicking Picard’s voice back at him for whatever reason. No exaggeration, that’s a brilliant, expert level impression.
@smbu4 жыл бұрын
Well they did have Data doing Picard's voice when he took control of the ship on his way to meet Lore with the Borg. Although that was probably just Patrick Stewart's voice track playing.
