Thanks so much for name dropping the book, The Spanish House For America. I'm slowly building my architectural library on these recommendations.

Great book! Beautiful illustrations and photos. It retails for +/-$500 from used book retailers. If you search online, there are free PDF copies to download.

One of your best “fixes”. I love classical Mediterranean architecture. Tile roof, arched windows, wrought iron, stone and stucco. Perfection!

Great job making the modifications to improve the look and feel of what otherwise would have been a rather strange looking house. The details make it unique and add some beauty and life to the house.Bravo!

The client should have your plan drawn up and built accordingly. These ideas are really good as they are and they should retain you to fine tune everything inside too. I live in Cle Elum WA. It's growing and losing its sense of place with steampunk and modern farmhouse. I wish you were here to uncover what our aesthetic should be!

Very nice changes. It's also going to need similar changes to the interior, especially Spanish moldings, archways, thresholds, maybe cove ceilings in the upstairs bedrooms, fireplace, staircase with wrought iron, bathroom tile... Thanks, Brent

My favorite style of house along with mission, hacienda, etc. It's GREAT seeing you work on these. Where I live(Jax, FL), it's interesting how the historic districs all have one medditeran house for every 15 or 20 "traditional" American historic houses. They're all randomly spread out in no particular order. Thanks for the book, I'm going to look for a copy.

"Santa Barbary". That's a good one! Nice work on this. This is a fun style, with a lot of flexibility to play with as you show. I also like your drawing with just the red wash that gives it an identifiable character.

While it looks way better, the high pitch probably has to do with snow loads in CO (I grew up there) especially depending on elevation there. It really depends on where in the state it is. Not a lot of "spanish revival" there (most of the housing where I lived up north, was 1950s-1960s) but in the south you did have some real housing from the original spanish period in adobe, but again, snow levels make a big factor in how the houses look. Up in Leadville they don't even have gutters.
@BrentHull7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Snow loads will be calculated into the framing package.

As the former chair of an historic preservation commission ... and an enormous fan of Spanish architecture ... I am immensely impressed by what you've done with the plan for this house. Clearly the original architect had no understanding of the many variations of the style that you talked through. I'm so glad your client found you! I hope the client also allowed you to provide some guidance on how to incorporate these design elements into the interior. Would love to see pictures of the finished product ...

I always look forward to these videos. Great job helping another house with an identity crisis. I wonder where this house is in Colorado and if snow load is a factor in determining roof pitch. Maybe Mediterranean isn’t practical in a snowy region.

I was just in Spain last month. Madrid, and then a couple of days in Andalusia -- Granada, Malaga, Cordoba. I took a couple of great tile roof pictures, inspired by your videos, etc. It's remarkable how different they look from what I usually see on new construction Med style roofs here (which had never really been my taste). Gracias.

Beautifully done with perfect balance of detail! Also nice correction of the roof pitch. Even in California many people renovating spanish style houses totally miss the proper 4:12 roof pitch.

Your design changes will yield a classic house that would have been in style in California in 1925, and will likely still look terrific 100 years from now. I live in San Diego, and often see the larger upscale vintage Spanish style homes in the neighborhoods of Kensington, Talmadge and Mission Hills. Your details are spot on. Mediterranean style was 'corrupted and cheapened' when it was mass produced in the 1970s (my opinion), but by going back to the elements made popular by Cliff May in the early 1930s (before he changed focus to ranch style homes), you can't go wrong. Certain details could be dialed back a bit, depending on the taste of the homeowner, shifting between ornate or rustic. My 1931 custom Spanish-style house leans more toward the Mission Revival, a single story bungalow.

So impressive. Love all the changes. Infusing character and authentic details, pure genius. Would love to see more books you use for reference to find character details for colonial revival, colonial, etc. that would be so helpful to add to our collections of design details. And once again the architect punts and doesn’t know what to do.

Nailed the style, but is this a good idea in Colorado? Those low windows are gonna have snow piled up against them, no?

Huge changes and improvements. From an uninspired tract house to something special. They are going to need interior details as well because the Spanish Mediterranean background is not prevalent or well known in the Colorado

These changes add alot of traditional charm, but I question how much these changes add to the cost of construction since the materials and construction skill are specialized.

Hi Brent. On this site Fine Homebuilding (the same people who put out the magazine) just put out three videos on building a porch (ceiling, box beams and tapered columns) using PVC material. I was wondering what you thought of their techniques and what you would do different (other than using PVC, of course).
