And Foley lost to Taker at Hell In the Cell. Though Bret v Owen, stands with just a few matches where both did great work, the match itself was great, they both got over. There are plenty of matches that were great in their time, but were carried by one wrestler (Bret v Diesel). Even more where both were great, but one obviously was the highlight (The aforementioned Foley v Taker). The ones where everything and everyone involved were pretty flawless are rare. And a great many included Bret "could have a five star match with a mop" Hart. Iron Man match Bret v HBK, I Quit match Bret v Austin, Bret v Owen (WM X and Summer Slam), Macho v Steamboat. We probably got, at most, one to two matches like that a year when I was watching (WM II through mid 2000s) Note: I was a WWF kid, so forgive my not mentioning NWA/WCW matches.
@TheEvolver3115 ай бұрын
@jordanbruce Shawn never really got over with the average fan until way later, smart fans sure but that was a small fraction of the fans then. It's why Micheal's first World Title he bombed out and they had to get it off him because be wasn't over enough to carry it.
@Thor-Orion5 ай бұрын
@@TheEvolver311and they fucked up Sid’s massive popularity to try to transfer it to Shawn right before Shawn “lost his smile.” Shawn in the mid 90’s was a huge POS and McMahon catering his business to Shawn is what nearly drove the company under.

Agreed. To me, Owen, Davey at "Wembly," Austin at WM 13 and Diesel Survivor Series 95, and his 123 Kid match on Raw was perfect. The man just couldn't have a bad match, win or lose.

One of the most nonsensical things to happen in an era of crap nonsense was that the WINNER of the coin toss would get to fight Yoko first and then have to defend vs Brett if he won. Wouldn’t having to win only one championship match to leave ‘mania w the belt be the better prize than having to beat the champ and then defend vs the #1 contender?
@JackQSmith Жыл бұрын
Always thought that too. The reactions to the coin toss made it even more dumb. Bret lost his first match of the night and still left as champ. Seems like that coin toss worked out well for him.

In Bret's case in kayfabe I think he would have much preferred to win the coin toss and not have to wrestle Owen. And remember, if Bret had won the toss, then Luger would have had to wrestle Crush first.
@thefuturist886410 ай бұрын
I imagine they saw Bret’s performance at KotR 1993 and realised that he can wrestle multiple matches in a night and make them all exciting, whereas Luger may not have inspired such confidence. Meanwhile Yoko didn’t really need to do much in either match except be large and heavy.

Ah, remember when the WWF respected their audience's intelligence enough to actually allow the matches to tell the stories? They've since throw nuance and subtlety out the window and replaced them with simply slapping you in the face repeatedly with all the intricacies in an attempt to ensure some of it actually sticks to your smooth brain and doesn't just fly right over your head. Then they just choreograph a spotfest that arouses your senses a handful of times and pulls you out of your near catatonic state just enough to wipe the drool from your chin occasionally
