This is something I must consider building (or having built). As a larger guy with bad knees kayaks just aren't something I am fond of. The Kaku Zulu Hybrid was on my short list. Do you know how much weight was added to boat? Love the build and the story. Especially the retrospect and how it relates to the design and how you would do it differently if you had to do it again.

I did not weigh it... but when I took it back on the water, I didnt lose even 1mph compared to before the build. In saying that, I'm positive it is a bit heavier, just not enough to matter too much.

Dang you’re right… I haven’t done any Jon Boat KZbin stuff since 2021 🤯 I used it a bunch in 2022. Then 2023 the fishing was bad and all 2024 my trailer has been broke. The boat is a dream… I absolutely love it. Planning to get my trailer fixed this winter so I can get back out there next year. I’ve been working on my surf movie for a year now so that’s been my focus. Once that’s done it’s back to full time KZbin.
@StartUmUp3 ай бұрын
@brettbarley I'm glad to hear the boat is good. I just picked up one at an auction, got it mostly for the trailer cause I was under the impression flat bottom boats don't work in hawaiian waters and I haven't found to many videos of people using them in salt water. I guess I should just take it out for a test run one day before I start investing it in being an oio (bonefish) killer on the flats
@brettbarley3 ай бұрын
@@StartUmUp oh ya I dunno how a flat bottom will hold up out there... so much wind. but if youre on East Side of Oahu, it should be fine for ripping around Kaneohe flats! I got to fish out there one time in 2019. so all time!

How do you attach the deck framing to the boat?
@brettbarley2 жыл бұрын
Stainless steel machine screws. I didn’t scree the flooring in, just layed it in the bottom. Only screwed framing to the seats

@@brettbarley how about the front deck area supports that come down where there isn’t a seat area? I’m thinking of doing a similar idea with my 1240. I don’t want to deck from the front all the way to the middle bench. I want to leave an area for the wife’s feet.

@@patrickfearon7942 I brought 2 supports down over where one of the ribs in the boat is, and used brackets to attache them to the ribs. that main support that runs over them is also bolted from the outside of the hull by the rail.

@reowhite4862 Жыл бұрын
I used to paint cars for a living. Your paint failed not because of the paint but because you have to use a direct to metal primer designed for aluminum first. We found that out in the mid 2000's when ford started putting aluminum hoods on trucks and the paint pealed triggering a factory recall. Every bodyshop in town was full up with trucks that needed the hoods fully stripped and repainted. What did we learn? You need a specific primer to go on bare aluminum. Hope that helps!
@brettbarley Жыл бұрын
so I used direct to metal aluminum paint... but I think in hindsight now examining it post-paint peel years later... I don't think I sanded it at all, or well enough at the very least. the guy who I copied from had great success... so for sure user error on my end. not the paint.

how much money did you spend on this build? I have the same boat. and need to travel same road you did.
@ryanknoup62883 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t bring it up but I went through this on a kayak build and it is for your own safety. The navigation lights are supposed to be seen from straight ahead to 112* aft on either side of the boat. I’ve been so close to getting run over in my kayak in broad daylight. It’s exponentially harder to see smaller craft at night with a bow that is not properly on plane.
@brettbarley3 жыл бұрын
Ya the lights were mostly for show and for safety. But around here the places I launch and fish at night, there’s no normal boat traffic. Heck I’ve only ever seen 1 boat when I’ve been out at night. If I was on a busy waterway I’d have rigged em better
@carolinacomeups99123 жыл бұрын
Looks like you didn't use a type of etching such as self etching primer or a chemical etching washdown, still a great build tho

Epic setup Brett! Two questions if ya don't mind. 1. The front deck looks kinda small, do you ever wish it was a bit bigger? 2. Looks like a good amount of effort went into the lights. Is the night fishing there solid enough to make effort worth your while?
@brettbarley3 жыл бұрын
it's plenty fine... if I wasn't trying to fit my whole family on the boat, I'd definitely have made it bigger. but comfort wise for all of us, it made more sense to keep it small. the night fishing here is phenomenal for bait fishing... not artificial though. I went WAY in depth on the light setups, even though I'll hardly use them. but I wanted to have them, for those nights we do go out. it was more to do it for fun, than for need.

Awesome job!! I’m in the process of a similar build on a fiberglass 16’ tri-hull, for inshore saltwater fishing. I’ve thought about filming the process but I don’t feel like hearing all the keyboard warriors opinions on it. My biggest concern is taking a wave over the bow and suddenly being in a pickle. Do you think that’s a concern in boats like this that are not self-bailing?
@brettbarley3 жыл бұрын

I have been looking at several Johnboat fishing boats for this exact same reason. I want to hit up salt for 90% of the time and then squeeze up into the cypress trees near my home the other 10%. Bouncing off of stumps. Chasing crappie up in the cypress flats in the Spring. How does the aluminum hold up to salt long term? The "Lowe Roughneck 1760 Pathfinder" is one of the boats I am looking HARD at. For $20.5k it comes with a Center console, tunnel drive, 19gal fuel cap, etc. Not bad! The motor is super mounted high already so no need for a jack plate. I can get galvanized trailers with Lowe boats as well as an option. www.loweboats.com/hunt-fish/roughneck/center-console/roughneck-1760-pathfinder.html
