Kind of hard to say he struggles at TE when he drafted the best TE ever and, if not for catching a body, drafted another elite level TE...in the same draft. Then there is Jermaine Graham and Ben Watson. Both are solid TE, especially Watson. And both were drafted in an era prior to big impact receiver TEs.

Also the Steelers were 2 spots behind the Pats in round 2 and it was “reported” they were gonna take Thornton had the Pats not. All conjecture but I still think Bill got just what he wanted, knew Strange would still be sitting there at 29 so he finessed the chiefs for a couple late rounders. Chess moves?

Genuine question: I get that Strange has an absurdly high RAS for a lineman, but were the ones who scored higher than him actually good in the NFL? Like there's plenty of players who are obscenely gifted but never pan out for one reason or another. The stat means a lot more if he's in the company of hall of famers as opposed to journeymen who never maximized their potential
@alexsmith73872 жыл бұрын
Brandon Brooks had a perfect 10, he played for a decade before he retired due to persistent injury, Evan Mathias was an all Pro once and a pro bowler twice. Rashawn Slater was .01 higher than Strange. Looking through RAS for Guards, I think you get a better picture looking at the guys who scored a 9 or higher, and yeah, it correlates quite a bit. Few busts in the upper echelon of Guard RAS, but a lot of the names I knew right away were in the mid 9s.
@Rekcha2 жыл бұрын

We definitely love your single player breakdowns, fantasy outlooks, and draft tiers, but what I really found fascinating was the part of this video where you say "what can we tell about what this team wants to pivot towards based on this offseason?" As a non AFC-E fan, seeing your extrapolation was super fascinating and not a part of football analysis that I see very often. I loved it. Selfishly, I would love to hear you talk about Indy's plan of "find pass catchers who are crazy tall and crazy fast" and pairing it with JT, but legitimately I would watch 31 more videos where you talk about what direction you think teams are going based off of their drafts. As a Pats fan I've been warming up on this pick for weeks (best guard on the board which is a positional need and elite athletic ability). I have a much larger issue with the Tyquan pick. You rarely ever see anyone as thin as him succeed at wr. He also had 10th percentile agility score. The fact that this very skinny wr with no agility was taken over guys like George Pickens and Skyy Moore baffles me.
@hudsongonzalez7062 жыл бұрын
I believe the pats didn’t want Skyy Moore because he would play a Kendrick Bourne like role for them which wouldn’t help them win now. And the pats obviously aren’t going to pick Pickens because of NKeal Harry and their similarities. Tyquan actually has really good tape and looks very solid.

They won the Big 12 and than won their Bowl game also! I follow Baylor pretty good and you shouldn’t knock the talent of Thornton based on most of the season Baylor played Bohanon when Shapen was in for the BIg 12 championship game. Thornton had a impact! I think people should not listen to the Mel Kipers and Skip Bayless of sports and just rewatch a game yourself…. It's just a "he can do what we want for the scheme, the best out of anyone" pick. Definitely not the best WR that was on the board ... but what he could provide the offense is invaluable, so long he's not a complete bust. And there is, definitely, a higher than zero chance that he's a bust. But that doesn't mean he wasn't the best pick for what they want schematically... if it works out, that's going to be a really tough offense to face.

But i must say it's so exhausting when you actually put work into studying these players, and then you have to hear the media kill picks whose scouting reports 90+% of them have never read, and they talk about the draft boards without context. As if every team, has the same board, and When this was especially NOT the case this year. Biggest pet peeve is when they talk up dudes the entire offseason (Jermaine Johnson) as a smokescreen, it makes the team that took him later look like they got a steal, meanwhile, the guy no one mentioned cause they don't want him getting attention, he has to be panned as a pick. it makes mainstream media draft talk nauseating.

I always laugh when people think Belichick made a serious error. He's not perfect but he's been around too long to screw up as bad as people think he did with this pick. Strange can be very good in the league and Bill sees that.

I was really confused why everyone seemed to be as down on the pick as they were; Strange seems like a good lineman and if you really like a guy and he fits, you take him as early as you think you have to. The only criticism I understood were the people that said the Patriots probably could have gotten away with trading back into the early 2nd round and picked up a couple more picks and still gotten their man.

The only issue I have is Strange doesn't close the gap between my Pats and Buff. Even if he works out really well we had Shaq Mason in that spot last year and we still got killed by Buff. Strange fills a hole that our staff created instead of using that pick on someone who can help stop Buff's offense.
@173jaSon3712 жыл бұрын
Shaq Mason was at RG, Strange will slot in at LG with Onwenu probably at RG. Last year Onwenu moved around a ton and was mainly in as a TE in jumbo packages in the 2nd half of the season but now with Thuney, Karras, and Mason gone they needed much better depth at IOL. After Strange and Onwenu it's a bunch of unproven guys as depth behind them at G and Andrews at C. Moving Mason will save them like 5 mil in 22 and another 5mil in 2023 when they have a ton of cap space, so it could be worse. Pats usually hit on OL so for now I won't complain. Better than wasting it on an N'keal Harry.

@@173jaSon371 I know the situation on the oline and who played where. Like I said the issue isn't his skill is irrelevant to bridging the gap between us and Buff. If the Oline is just as good as last year, we still lose to Buff because of our lack of skill and speed on defense. That was the priority in the 1st round. Strange doesn't move us forward he only at best keeps us where we were.
@173jaSon3712 жыл бұрын
@@metalscottsman Picking 1 defensive player in the first round won't magically fix the entire defense and that 1 player would have just as much chance to bust as an OL does. I think BB knows team building a tad better than "NE- JACKCHOP" does. We can't expect a championship level roster every year, theyve replaced just about the entire last super bowl roster already and it isn't easy to instantly build another one when you don't have the goat, a rookie QB is running the O and has a new OC in year 2. Have some patience, they aint winning 14 games this year. We also don't know how they had the players on defense graded in the draft, or the offensive players. Lets wait til games are played before we freak out.
@metalscottsman2 жыл бұрын
@@173jaSon371 a few things. 1- not freaking out 2- i Don't expect championships every year. I expect to make moves that improve the team, not keep it the same. 3- the idea you can't get an impact player as a rookie is simply dumb. 4- BB has been abysmal at drafting in the 1st and 2nd rounds since 2013 save mac jones. He makes mistakes constantly in the early rounds. And this idea that if you are not BB you can't discuss draft opinions is asinine.

imma say the same thing about strange that i did about mac last year: is he who i was hoping for? naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. But he's on our team now and I hope he's awesome and plays for us for years and we can look back and go, "that was a good pick, nice job Bill." I just want to win! Also i like the Tyquan pick, im excited for him, pretty sure a lot of Pats fans are not. Hope he proves them wrong!

Seems like there was a pretty decent run on iol players. Imo other than Zach Tom if he plays center, there isn’t really an iol player taken after strange that I would be willing to bank on outperforming him.

So as a patriots fan, I do in fact see a ton of “over drafted” comments from our shitty fan base. Many of us who know a bit about football, don’t mind the pick itself being Strange. The questioning we have is more in line with getting trounced by buffalo because our defense (linebackers in particular) are slow as molasses going uphill in January. And we also lost a few lb this off-season. With nakobe dean being on the board, everyone was going nuts thinking we should have taken him. Because we clearly didn’t know what the professional scouts know about the injury histories. So it made a little more sense. Still not fully, but it’s a start. Also, we tend to not give coordinator “titles” till a year or two in the spot. Still have the same coach doing the same job, just not titles.
