You are absolutely WRONG about the cans of compressed air... "This type of product is most often packaged as a can that, when a trigger is pressed, blasts a stream of compressed gas through a nozzle at the top. Despite the names "canned air" or "compressed air", the cans do not actually contain air (i.e. do not contain O2 or N2 gases) but rather contain other gases that are compressible into liquids. True liquid air is not practical, as it cannot be stored in metal spray cans due to extreme pressure and temperature requirements. Common duster gases include hydrocarbon alkanes, like butane, propane, and isobutane, and fluorocarbons like 1,1-difluoroethane, 1,1,1-trifluoroethane, or 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane which are used because of their lower flammability." The can would have to be as thick as a diving cylinder ... I worked with the cans of air doing repair work and turning them upside down releases the compressed liquid refrigerant

I'm of the mind that schools should cover this sort of thing in health classes. Even when not used in deadly amounts, using too much deodorant isn't healthy. Kids (well, all people) are bombarded by messages in advertising every day and are still figuring out what messages are trustworthy, and to a young mind, those Axe commercials tell a pretty vivid story.

My little brother also did this stuff when he was around 14-15 years old. But since it was producing so much "smell" in the whole house, we all told him to stop. It worked a little, he now only uses the rolling type of deodorant, and not the spray option. The main reason we were against using the spray option was because me and my father would get major headaches from it, so that helped persuade him from continuing. Update: He is now 20 years old have started using strong perfume instead, that is just as bad as the spray deodorant, goddamit. Update again: Me and my brother both got a set of strong smelling spray deodorant and soap as a Christmas present (you can smell it trough the sealed box) gonna give it to someone else instead.

A few months ago, at my part time job we had to call authorities on two twin sisters of about 13 years of age. They were stealing massive amounts of deodorant, and by talking to them we learned that they actually got high off the stuff. Learning about the fact abuse of these products can actually bring about severe health issues makes this story even more depressing. After they left, the entire office smelled like a deodorant factory had exploded, too.

This is why we need to both start teaching people how to bathe thoroughly, and working with neurodivergent kids on finding alternative ways to wash up since many go into sensory overload or feel pain when water touches them or if water is coming down onto them. We'd have less of this if more people knew about body wipes, dry bathing and the like imo.

Our junior high created a rule about spray deodorants, colognes, and after shaves. The boys were just dousing themselves in that stuff and the hallways reeked of it. Some kids were getting bad headaches too. So they had to tell the boys to minimize using it or don’t use it at all. Some of them weren’t regularly bathing and used these things to try to mask the funk.

Small correction, "canned air" as is sold for computer cleaning is usually not CO2, as this would require much thicker cans to contain the pressure. Instead they're often filled with the very same flammable propellants like propane or butane as deodorant or even more worrying some still contain ozone depleting refrigerants like difluroethane and tetrafluroethane!

There isn't an ozone layer way up in the atmosphere though. There is a closed dome over the earth. (Research operation high jump, fish bowl and dominic from the US gov.) So we don't need to worry about "poking holes in the ozone layer". Although, it is not good to use these sprays, worrying about the ozone layer is definitely NOT one of the reasons to discontinue the use of body sprays.

For example she always be like don't get that deodorant don't get spray deodorants, ones with aluminum, a bunch of weird ingredients, try to get the aluminum free natural deodorant she would tell me. Now I just use coconut oil and baking soda and it works great so... But she would tell me this about like foods, other products, vitamins that I need, vitamins that I lack, etc... So if some amount always gets breathed in and goes to the brain even in ppt amounts, what is the half-life or does it permanently sit there slowly collecting for the people who spray even in well ventilated areas small amounts etc? Would like to have this question addressed, super curious.
@Derekzparty
@Derekzparty 2 жыл бұрын
The "halflife" is very short. The most important thing to do is to get out of a room with a high concentration of butane/propane and into an area of normal/fresh air. Also don't forget that butane/propane have no smell and so without the correct tools all you have to go off is the smell of the added fragrance which varies between models and manufacturer. In the long term this doesn't build up in your body and is absorbed and used readily. In the short term if the air you breathing is 1% butane/propane then the body is forced to breathe it in and accumulated in the blood stream until you hopefully breathe in fresh air and replace the butane/propane in your blood with oxygen. Being in a large area like a gym also drastically reduces the danger from a single can being emptied as compared to a 100 square foot room with the windows closed.

Lack of proper knowledge in hygiene and product usage was the indirect source of the cause, rare as it is. Basic knowledge skills like this needs to be addressed early in a person's life which is just as important as any academic skills a child learns. Certainly, this is not the parent's fault, but often minor skills and knowledge can save a person from making fatal errors in judgment and should be taken seriously, like don't play with and electrical socket or look both ways before crossing the street, and to understand why. Even in these cases, it was mentioned to the victims but not corrected or stopped. Very unfortunate.

Yes, some of them have poor outcomes, but no one is ever happy about it when that happens and they contribute a lot to advancing veterinary and medical care. Can't speak for all of them in history, but gone are the days of beagle abuse at least. An ethic board now ensures that. The ones I met were used to test treatments for medical conditions they are themselves prone to and everyone babied the heck out of them, lol. They also got full run of their own dog park.

Deodorants are always being recalled. They keep learning new things about the common ingredients in most deodorants. The reason that this can be such a dangerous thing to use, is because most things we apply topically, are absorbed by our skin. 100% of what is absorbed through our armpits goes into our blood stream. Our skin has no defense against toxic ingredients.

Sorry another science error @7:24. The cooling at point of use is due to the pressurised gas expanding which requires energy to push out into the atmosphere. This energy is scavenged from the local environment as heat, hence it gets cold and heat energy flow into it. This cooling has no impact inside the bottle where the liquid is boiling as the pressure drops, and it continues until either the pressure rises (valve shuts), or the can empties. This boiling* process also takes energy, so the can scavenges heat from the surrounding (usually your hand), but the two are not thermally linked. As the system absorbs heat it's not Adiabatic, but if you include the expansion work it may be Isentropic. (*It's boiling, not evaporating, because bubbles are formed which rise to the surface)

Just putting this out there for anyone panicking over what to replace the spray with, you can buy skin probiotics that will massively reduce bo production if you use after a shower. That should make non propellent deodorants and scents more than sufficient. Heck, over the pandemic I pushed the limits just to see and I can go 7 days before ... Actually I just couldn't take it any more, I didn't actually smell, lol. But like seriously, probiotics help a lot, as does leaving arm pit hair intact. I used a brand called mother dirt, but there are probably others just as good so even if you shower every day and still struggle with bo, I definitely recommend skin probiotics.

German here: In Germany Lynx is called Axe😂 Let me make an educated guess here: The renamed it maybe because of the fact that „arm pit“ in German is called „Achsel“, pronounced like „Excel“ but with the emphasis on the first syllable and an „ah“ instead of „eh“. „Ah-xcel“. And of this german word „Achsel“ they took the first few letters („Achs“) and made it sound English-pronunced -> „Axe“😅
