I had a tendency to throw one leg past the other, which would lead to one side being more stretched than the other by morning. The imbalance would lead to back strain. I actively avoid sleeping on my back, not because it's uncomfortable, but because I often sleep restlessly and see nightmares. Also heard somewhere it's the most likely position to experience Sleep Paralysis.
@pickles31283 жыл бұрын
You know you're right. Whenever I or the person sleeping next to me has experienced sleep paralysis, they have always been on their back, except for once, when I accidentally overdosed on the muscle relaxer phenibut. Unlike my spouse and others, though, I never sensed any impending doom or fear, I just realized I couldn't move and coaxed myself back to sleep. Except once I saw a puppy sitting at the end of my bed, but that was more confusing than anything.

The way I have sleep paralysis in a seemingly weird way. Also, I can move it it’s extremely difficult (by moving I mean flexing my fingers). Funny, I suffered from sleep paralysis and was very scared to have to face it, I still have it, but then I learned that it's a free ticket to a lucid dream, so when I'm having sleep paralysis I just imagine myself in a place and suddenly I am there, so now I'm kinda grateful when it happens cause it's a free lucid dream, if not the best thing you can do if you realize you're having sleep paralysis is to stay calm and not open your eyes, as that can make you panic fast by hallucinating weird or scary stuff, and rather just coaxing yourself to sleep again

I quickly decided to be very particular in the way I sleep. I think what happened is the part under the pillow got pushed up, and eventually was quite offset from the rest of the spine. The design of the stomach is why heartburn is more likely when laying on right side. Think of the stomach as a bottle with two openings, top and bottom. It lays sideways starting at the solar plexus where there is an opening to the throat. The bottom of the bottle, (right rib-ish, almost to side of body) hooks up to the intestines. If you lay on left, the throat opening is covered by whatever solids or liquids is in the stomach. Any gas present would rise up towards the intestine access point. Thereby the gas can not get to the throat-access to burn its lining.

I found the perfect game changer. Use a foam travel pillow that wraps around your neck. Lay it flat, and then snuggle into it. You'll find that it cradles your head and neck perfectly from any position, no matter how much you toss and turn. If you are a side sleeper like I am, a knee pillow makes a huge difference in relieving lower back pain. You don't even have to go out and buy one. Try it with a rolled up bath towel, and see if that helps.

Actually get one of those long tube pillows. Or a side/cuddle pillow. It's just a long cylindrical pillow. Basically the same but you cuddle the pillow and it's comfy, and keeps your back straight in the same way.

Brew my bro, I can't tell you how much I share your experience of insomnia. I have put much personal effort into improving my sleep over the years, and the number one disruptor of sleep (for me at least) has been anxiety. Living a life of over-intellectualization and not enough physical activity makes it so the brain can't rest when its time to rest. Over-thinking and over-analyzing, in addition to separating the body from the mind (tool reference), makes it so the mind is given more power than the body and the imbalance greatly disrupts sleep. The experience of an overactive mind can roughly be defined as "anxiety". The worst part of it all: coffee is essentially liquid anxiety. A certain amount of anxiety is helpful and lets you get more work done, just like having extra coffee helps you be more productive because it takes you out of a state of restfulness. When imbalanced the anxiety will disrupt the whole body-mind system, making falling asleep extremely difficult and waking up throughout the night very likely.

I badly injured my neck in a weightlifting accident in my early 20's. The best fix and prevention of issues (40 years later) has been: firm bed, no pillow, and a hand towel rolled into a foot long by 2" diameter roll placed under my Th1 (or so) vertabra, right at the bump at shoulder level. (and sleeping on my back. Worst thing is for me to in any way sleep with my chin tucked down. I generally (in hotels) throw the pillow off the bed just to be sure I don't use it unconsciously.

I sleep in what some refer to as the “dancer” position. It’s because just side sleeping with one leg straight and the other bent to basically that foot being at the knee of the straight leg or being kicked out. Even when I’m cold and trying to curl up I can only have both legs curled in for so long before one leg straighten ups. I also find that hugging something or having arms crossed at the chest reduces the chance of shoulder pain or waking up the dead limbs

Look up gel pillows that are designed to stay cool. Also flip your pillow In the night if you get hot. I’m a sleep tech and when no amounts of fan or AC stops the patient from sweating for us to read the brainwaves, flipping the pillow and possibly putting a towel over the pillow does it.

Ironically I have slept Quadrupedal my entire life and never knew about this. I was born with scoliosis, I couldn't sleep on my side, back, or stomach. But I found that sleeping on my stomach, turning my hip to pull my legs up on my side and sleeping on my arms to keep my stomach flat. This actually alleviated my pain and I occasionally swap from left to right while I sleep. So I can honestly say, sleeping quadrapedal does help alleviate spinal pain.
